  2. [2]Naval Historical Center, USNS David C. Shanks (T-AP-180), page dated May 24, 2006 (preserved mirror) [nhhc_danfs]
    Locator
Historical narrative paragraphs 1–3; MARAD 1PL_01.png Navy title row
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The Naval Historical Center history describes American Farmer as the intended name, launch as Gulfport in 1942 at Pascagoula, and Army delivery in April 1943. It records a troop/dependent conversion in 1946, refurbishment August 1947–May 1948, and transfer to Navy MSTS in March 1950 as USNS David C. Shanks (T-AP-180). The MARAD card separately records Navy title on March 1, 1950.

Official Navy-authored history accessed through its ibiblio preservation mirror, not a live DANFS entry. Title transfer is not necessarily operational transfer; March 15 was not independently verified. Conversions do not establish asbestos work.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
OSHA’s 1994 asbestos-rule preamble states that asbestos products were extensively used on American ships from the early 1940s through the late 1970s, including living-space bulkheads and insulation for pipes, boilers and tanks. This is era background only.

    Locator
Search ledger sl-04 through sl-08; appellate opinion pp. 663–664 and final Affirmed disposition
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
The completed authenticated searches located no qualifying asbestos litigation. Morrell v. United States, 193 F. Supp. 705 (1960), and its appeal, 297 F.2d 662 (1962), concern a lifeboat accident, not asbestos. The appeal affirms nonliability of the United States under negligence and unseaworthiness theories. Other returned hits concern unrelated persons.

    Limitations
Bounded search result, not proof that no asbestos case exists. Hull docket search was blocked by fleet pacing. Trial text retrieval was also attempted but not completed; classification uses trial search excerpt and full appellate text. Affirmed judgment concerns the accident only and is not an asbestos merits finding.
