    Finding type

    Finding
The Naval Historical Center history states that the Army transport transferred to MSTS on 1 March 1950 as USNS Fred C. Ainsworth, served on troop transportation duties through the 1950s including trans-Pacific Korean War operations, left service in November 1959, and was stricken in July 1961. MARAD independently dates Navy title transfer to 1 March 1950 and reserve-fleet custody at Suisun Bay to 2 November 1959. The qualifying service interval for this record is MSTS, 1 March 1950–2 November 1959; earlier Army service is background.

Navy-authored page is an archival mirror, not the live DANFS entry. Exact November day comes from the MARAD custody card; July 1961 is month precision only. Operational history does not establish asbestos exposure or legal eligibility.

Right-hand sale/withdrawal annotations; corroborating card.png lower transaction rows; Detail/1741 milestone table
    Finding type

    Finding
MARAD records Suisun Bay reserve entry on 2 November 1959. The 1 March 1973 scrap sale to David L. Hewitt was canceled due to buyer default. The ship was sold to Inter-Ocean Grain Storage Co., Ltd. for nontransportation use on 26 June 1973, with physical delivery/withdrawal on 23 August 1973. The online milestone table labels 26 June 1973 as withdrawal; the cards distinguish the sale date from physical withdrawal.

    Limitations
Canceled sale is not evidence of completed scrapping. Ultimate fate after delivery is not established. Reserve card title annotation reads 21 October 1960, whereas the status card records permanent transfer on 1 November 1960; these milestones are not silently equated. Neither card is an asbestos survey.

    Finding type

    Finding
GAO HRD-80-2 describes asbestos use in Navy ships and Navy policies in 1975 and 1979 for selective replacement of asbestos insulation. This supplies general Navy fleet/era research context only; no material aboard Fred C. Ainsworth is identified.

    Limitations
Only the official product-page summary was reviewed; direct local fetch was HTTP 403, but the web reader returned the summary. Review concerned Long Beach and Norfolk shipyards and policies after this vessel left MSTS. This is broad fleet context, not a class specification, hull survey, installation list, yard visit, or proof of exposure. Tier 2 denotes contextual evidence only.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No direct ship-specific asbestos survey, product identification, abatement record, or qualifying asbestos finding was located in the sources successfully examined for this batch. Ship-specific asbestos documentation remains unknown. The CourtListener sweep is incomplete: exact-name opinions returned three hits, while the hull query was blocked by fleet pacing and docket searches were not run.

    Limitations
This is a negative search result, not a finding that the ship contained no asbestos. It is not an exhaustive litigation clearance. Russell full text remains unverified; unsearched dockets and inaccessible archives may contain relevant records. No individual exposure, causation, or asbestos-free condition is inferred.

    Finding type

    Finding
NARA describes MSTS/MSC deck logs for 1946–1981 and directs researchers to Archives II. These logs are a potential route to operational and maintenance leads for the qualifying MSTS period.
