    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
T-AP-182 was laid down at Pascagoula, Mississippi, on 7 January 1941, launched as Pascagoula on 23 January 1942, and delivered to the Army on 18 September 1942 under the name George W. Goethals. Navy acquisition on 1 March 1950 brought the transport into MSTS with a civilian crew. DANFS describes Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean service and inactivation after return to New York on 29 September 1959.

NHHC text was available through the search index; direct web open failed and direct HTTP retrieval returned 404. Dates describe delivery/acquisition, not a commissioned USS. No asbestos or numerical crew complement is established.

    Finding
MARAD identifies this Ingalls-built 1942 transport as C3-IN P&C, AP-182, formerly Pascagoula, with fate sold for scrap. Its status card records MC-109, Hudson River fleet entry on 20 November 1959, scrap sale on 26 October 1970 and withdrawal on 21 November 1970.

    Locator
Milestones and status-card title annotation; DANFS final paragraph at https://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/danfs/g/george-w-goethals.html
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Custody dates require distinction: DANFS gives Maritime Administration transfer on 20 November 1960; MARAD records entry/acquisition on 20 November 1959 and a title annotation of 21 October 1960. The status card supports the 1959 entry and a handwritten title-transfer annotation dated 10-21-60. These are retained as a source discrepancy, not collapsed into one transfer date.

    Limitations
Distinct physical-custody and title events may explain part of the discrepancy, but DANFS date has not been reconciled against the underlying transfer instruments. No exposure inference follows.

    Locator
Shipbuilding and repairing discussion; paragraph beginning Asbestos products were used extensively
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
OSHA describes extensive asbestos-product use in American ships from the early 1940s through the late 1970s, including accommodation bulkheads and machinery-space pipe, boiler and tank insulation. This supports era-level research context for the 1942 transport.

Relevant paragraph inspected in the official-site search-index extract; full-page retrieval returned 403. General industry history does not identify this hull, installed products, manufacturers, quantities, disturbance, individual exposure or causation. Tier 2 denotes era evidence only.

    Locator
    search_ledger sl-01 through sl-12; research/batch-9531/RESEARCH.md
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos documentation was located in the accessed DANFS text, MARAD detail and status card, or the targeted public web searches recorded in the ledger. Ship-specific asbestos status remains unknown. CourtListener coverage is incomplete because the helper refused the first request when the shared pacing budget was spent.

    Limitations
This is a bounded research result, not proof that asbestos was absent or that no litigation exists. CourtListener returned no search response, so there are no litigation hits to classify. No medical or legal conclusion is supported.

    Locator
Collection description and Archives II reference instructions
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA describes MSTS/MSC deck logs covering 1946-1981 and directs inquiries to Archives II. Logs can document operations, ports and some onboard events; this is a follow-up route for locating this vessel’s records.

    Locator
Shipyard, General Type and MARAD Type fields
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
MARAD ShipHistory 1779, G. W. GOETHALS, identifies an Oregon-built EC2-S-C1 cargo ship and is excluded from the AP-182 evidence set. Its official number and disposition must not be assigned to this Ingalls-built transport.
