- Finding
- Contemporaneous peer-reviewed occupational-hygiene study of Long Beach Naval Shipyard insulation workers, published the same year Thomas Washington was launched, documented asbestosis disability cases and one death among workers fabricating/installing and removing asbestos insulation during Navy vessel overhaul, establishing that asbestos-containing pipe/machinery insulation was standard on Navy vessels undergoing repair in this era.

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical review of governmental and U.S. Navy knowledge of asbestos health hazards concludes the Navy was among the most knowledgeable organizations in the world on asbestos hazards by the 1960s, and that mesothelioma was clearly linked to amphibole asbestos exposure between 1960 and 1970 - the same decade Thomas Washington was built and delivered - while asbestos-containing materials remained standard in Navy-specification shipboard construction into the 1970s.

- NARA's official research guide 'Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961' directs researchers to RG 19 (Bureau of Ships: General Information Books 1909-1964; Ship Engineering Drawings 1874-1976), RG 38 (CNO: Board of Inspection and Survey Reports 1940-1978), and RG 143 (Bureau of Supplies and Accounts: Specification Files 1947-1965) as the record groups most likely to hold Navy asbestos-specification and shipboard-materials records; RG 143's specification files (1947-1965) and RG 19's drawings/information books bracket Thomas Washington's 1963-65 construction period.
