- Finding
- DANFS history: laid down 1941-01-21 by W. A. Robinson, Inc., Ipswich, MA; launched 1941-05-10, sponsored by Mrs. W. A. Robinson; commissioned 1941-07-24 at Boston Navy Yard, LTJG Gordon Abbott, USNR, in command. After outfitting and shakedown in nearby waters and off the Virginia capes, arrived Portland, ME 1941-09-26 and reported to the commanding officer of Mine Division 26 for inshore-patrol minesweeping; served nearly a year, less a Boston Navy Yard availability 1942-03-18 to 1942-04-17. Ordered to Annapolis for Chesapeake Bay minesweeping tests; departed Portland 1942-08-22 and reached the Naval Academy six days later; decommissioned and simultaneously placed in service 1942-09-01. Spent the remainder of her naval career in the Chesapeake Bay region, mostly under the Naval Mine Warfare Proving Ground at Solomons Island, MD. Placed out of service 1946-06-14 and declared surplus about a week later; struck from the Navy list 1946-07-03; transferred early October 1946 to the Maritime Commission for disposal and sold to Higgins, Inc., of New Orleans, LA; delivered to that company at Lake Charles, LA 1946-10-09.

- Crew (complement 17); construction trades at W. A. Robinson, Inc., Ipswich (1941); Boston Navy Yard workers (outfitting; 1942 availability)
- Limitations
- Establishes identity, construction, and Navy service history only - the DANFS entry contains no asbestos or materials information. Verified through three independent mirrors of the public-domain text rather than the live NHHC page, which returned 404 at all candidate URLs on 2026-09-18 (known NHHC link rot; hazegray and ibiblio mirrors also unreachable - see search_ledger).

- Locator
- Accentor/Acme class specification block and unit table (AMc-36 listed, commissioned 1941)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Class configuration: the Accentor/Acme class were small wooden-hulled coastal minesweepers (about 70 built 1941-42) designed for sweeping mines in harbors, bays, and other littoral waters; diesel engine of about 400 hp, 10 knots, complement 17, armament two .50-caliber machine guns. A wooden hull and diesel propulsion mean the class carried no boilers or steam plant - the machinery category most associated with documented WWII-era asbestos insulation aboard larger combatants.

- Population
- Shipyard workers and class crews (class context)
- Limitations
- Class-level specification; documents the type's plant, not materials aboard this hull. Absence of a steam plant removes the most commonly documented WWII asbestos pathway but does not establish that no asbestos-containing material was aboard (gaskets, exhaust insulation, electrical insulation, fireproofing compounds remain undocumented either way).

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program context in which this 1941 wooden-hulled minesweeper was built - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization across naval construction.

- Limitations
- Era-level scholarship on WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel or the Accentor class and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, individual exposure, or causation.

- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- A federal admiralty opinion documents the Tug Accentor - plausibly this hull in civilian service - pushing a two-barge tow out of the Industrial Canal into the Mississippi River at New Orleans on the night of 1958-08-29 when the supertanker T/S Gage Lund collided with the tow's lead barge. The district court found sole fault on the Lund and dismissed the libel at libelant's cost; the Fifth Circuit affirmed 1961-05-02. The tug's owner/operator of record was Clifford C. Northern, Jr.

- 1958 collision; 1960-1961 litigation
- Limitations
- Classified down to context_only: the opinion names 'Tug Accentor' but never identifies her as the former USS Accentor (AMc-36). Identity is inferred - rare vessel name; DANFS-documented 1946 sale to a New Orleans firm for tug use; NavSource-documented Mississippi River tug career ending in a 1966 foundering - and could belong to a different vessel. Non-asbestos admiralty collision litigation in any case: it establishes no product, condition, or exposure fact about the hull.

- Finding
- Post-Navy career per NavSource: after Maritime Commission disposal the former AMc-36 was converted to a tug; acquired in 1954 by the Star Towing Co. of New Orleans; foundered 1966-06-12 at Mile 99 in the Mississippi River near Star Landing. NavSource also cites NARA still-photo file 80-G-71254 showing the vessel in Chesapeake Bay on 1943-06-08.

- Limitations
- Single secondary source; NavSource's own chronology is internally inconsistent ('Sold in 1952 to Higgins Industries... delivered 9 October 1946' conflicts with DANFS's October-1946 sale and delivery - the DANFS dates are adopted). The 1954 Star Towing acquisition and the 1966 foundering are corroborated by no official record; USCG merchant-vessel documentation (MVUS annuals) is the verification path and is not digitized for this hull. Establishes no asbestos information.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming Accentor or AMc-36 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The only litigation located is the 1960-61 non-asbestos admiralty collision case (ev-04).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - it reports that no qualifying record was found. The CourtListener opinion/RECAP name search was blocked by documented rate limits at query time, so the litigation sweep is incomplete and flagged rather than failed silently. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
