- Laid down 13 May 1944 at Jeffersonville, Ind., by Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Co. as LST-710; launched 28 June 1944 (sponsor Mrs. Maude B. Schricker); commissioned 24 July 1944. Served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the invasion of Luzon at Lingayen Gulf in January 1945. Returned to San Diego in summer 1945 and began conversion to a self-propelled barracks ship; named Accomac and redesignated APB-49 on 1 August 1945. Departed San Diego 8 September 1945 for Adak, Alaska (arrived 21 September); reached Ominato Ko, Japan, 3 October 1945; then Aomori Wan (over a month), Yokosuka (arrived 25 November, ended the year there), and Sasebo (18 February-3 March 1946); returned to San Diego 30 March 1946. Decommissioned 9 August 1946; berthed with the Pacific Reserve Fleet, San Diego, for over 12 years; DANFS could not locate a strike date and assessed probably late 1959; sold 7 December 1959 to Union Minerals & Alloys Corp., New York City, for scrapping. One battle star for WWII service as LST-710.

- Limitations
- Volunteer-maintained archive compiling official records - cross-checks against DANFS on all shared points. Strike date (1 May 1959) conflicts with DANFS's 'no date found, probably late 1959'; conversion 'completed 1 August 1945' sits beside DANFS's 'continued conversion work ... until 8 September' - both discrepancies logged in gaps. - Finding
- This hull belongs to the LST-542 design group: 328 ft oa, 50 ft beam, ~4,080 t full, 11.6 kt, powered by 2 x General Motors 12-567A diesels (~1,700 shp class figure) through Falk reduction gears on twin screws - a diesel plant with no boilers, which narrows the steam-lagging pathway relative to steam vessels. Era-relevant asbestos applications for the type: diesel exhaust lagging, gaskets and packing, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and machinery brake linings. The Benewah-class self-propelled barracks-ship conversion added berthing compartments for approximately 1,226 embarked troops, an interior rework typical of conversions that added accommodation insulation scope.

- Builder context: the Jeffersonville yard began as Howard Shipyard (1834); the U.S. Navy bought the Jeffersonville yards in 1942 and reorganized them as Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Co., which built 123 LSTs (including this hull) plus 23 submarine chasers and other craft during WWII; wartime employment peaked at roughly 13,000 workers. Renamed Jeffboat in 1957; the yard closed in 2018.
