- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Acushnet was launched on 1908-05-16 by Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. and commissioned as a revenue cutter on 1908-11-06. The Coast Guard transferred her to the Navy on 1936-05-30; the Navy commissioned her as ocean-going tug AT-63 on 1936-09-01. The DANFS entry gives an AT-63 complement of 38. She was redesignated ATO-63 shortly before her June 1944 Panama Sea Frontier assignment, decommissioned on 1945-12-14, stricken on 1946-01-08, and transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal on 1946-12-12.

- Locator
- Vessel particulars and final disposition paragraphs
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The Coast Guard's Acushnet, 1908 history identifies her as a Newport News-built revenue cutter with triple-expansion steam propulsion. It records Coast Guard decommissioning and Navy transfer on 1936-05-30, Navy commissioning on 1936-09-01, and Navy decommissioning on 1945-12-14.

- Limitations
- Propulsion and service history do not identify the materials installed on the engine, piping, or elsewhere aboard this hull; no asbestos finding follows from steam propulsion.

- Finding

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- NARA identifies asbestos use in U.S. Navy materiel during 1941-1961 as an established general research topic. AT-63 was in Navy service during 1941-1945, but no record identifies asbestos or a product on this hull.

- Limitations
- This is Navy-era context, not an Acushnet-specific material finding. The 1908 hull predates the guide's 1941-1961 framing, and her 1936-1945 Navy service alone cannot establish asbestos installation, retention, location, quantity, exposure, or causation.

- Locator
- Postwar transfer and renaming paragraph
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NHHC's Shackle (ARS-9) history identifies a different ship renamed Acushnet after its transfer to the Coast Guard in 1946; its WAT-167, WMEC-167, and WAGO-167 designations do not belong to AT-63.

- Locator
- search_ledger sl-uss-acushnet-at63-01 through -04
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos product or survey was identified in the official public Acushnet histories and NARA inventory reviewed for this batch. The Coast Guard's 1908 cutter history contains no asbestos or insulation term, and the NHHC Acushnet history returned no asbestos statement in accessible indexed text.

- Limitations
- A bounded public-source search, not proof that asbestos was absent. NHHC's full page was unavailable through the web open call, so its full text could not be searched; the accessible indexed text supports the historical facts but not a definitive page-level negative. No archive box, hull survey, or material specification was examined.

[9]CourtListener authenticated v4 search results for exact USS Acushnet, USS Acushnet asbestos, and AT-63; Goodson opinion [court_record]
- Locator
- search_ledger sl-uss-acushnet-at63-07 through -10; Goodson docket No. AT-63
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Authenticated CourtListener v4 opinion search for the bare string AT-63 returned many unrelated matches. Its first result, Goodson v. Florida Parole & Probation Commission, 436 So. 2d 413 (Fla. Dist. Ct. App. 1983), has appellate docket number AT-63; this is a hull-number string collision, not litigation involving USS Acushnet. Exact-name opinion and docket queries for USS Acushnet returned zero results; the exact-name-plus-asbestos opinion query also returned zero.

- Limitations
- Search result classification only. The 29,275 raw AT-63 opinion hits are dominated by unrelated uses of the string and were not all individually reviewed. Hull-plus-asbestos, ATO-63, and hull docket queries remain pending under helper pacing. Zero results in specific CourtListener searches do not prove that no lawsuit exists in any court or database; no exposure fact or adjudication is claimed.

[10]National Archives, Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961 [other_primary]
- Locator
- Beginning Research; Specification Files; Cartographic Branch; Other Records and their usefulness
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's asbestos research guide identifies Bureau of Ships RG 19 correspondence and ship engineering drawings, especially S39 insulation and lagging and S48 piping files, as routes to establish whether a particular Navy vessel carried asbestos. It states that deck logs and muster rolls do not themselves provide direct evidence of asbestos in a ship or its components.

- Limitations
- Research guidance only. The guide does not identify an Acushnet-specific specification, drawing, asbestos product, or exposure. RG 19's relevance to this former Coast Guard cutter's original 1908 construction remains to be confirmed.
