DANFS record for this hull: 'Adamant (AMc-62) was laid down on 31 March 1941 at Greenport, Long Island, N.Y., by the Greenport Basin & Construction Co. as Advance; renamed Adamant on 17 May 1941, launched on 7 June 1941; sponsored by Mrs. Kelly Hunter, a niece of Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morganthau, Jr.; and placed in service on 26 September 1941 at the New York Navy Yard, Lt. (jg.) R. A. L. Ellis, USNR, in charge.' Service narrative: fitted out at Brooklyn; departed 23 October 1941 for Hampton Roads; reported to Commandant, 5th Naval District; shakedown in Chesapeake Bay; from 13 November 1941, 5th Naval District Inshore Patrol; Norfolk area until late May 1944; reassigned 1st Naval District, arrived Boston 29 May 1944; New England coastal waters until June 1945; departed Boston 18 June 1945, arrived Charleston 28 June; ~six months in 6th Naval District; placed out of service at Charleston 18 December 1945; struck from the Navy list 8 January 1946; remained in Navy custody at Charleston 14 more months; sold 3 March 1947 to Mr. Lloyd Lambert of Baltimore, Md., for scrapping. Spec block (print DANFS): dp ~185; 97'1" x 22'0" x 9'0"; 10.0 k; cpl 17; 2 .50-cal mg; cl. Accentor.

    Limitations
DANFS documents identity, name change, service history, and disposal - no materials or asbestos content. Spec-block displacement reads '18a' in the mirror's OCR (print figure ~185 t); conflicts with NavSource's 224 t and the yard table's 205 t - carried in gaps. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page serves 404 (same standing link-rot noted in BATCH-01).

    Limitations
Secondary compilation (the standard per-hull reference for small Navy craft), consistent with DANFS on every milestone; adds the WSA-transfer framing for the 1947 sale (DANFS reads direct sale for scrapping - a framing variance, not a date conflict). Displacement 224 t conflicts with DANFS ~185 t and the yard table's 205 t (light vs full-load measure variance, unresolved). No asbestos or materials information.

    Finding
Independent per-hull yard-table row: 'AMc-62 | Advance/Adamant | US Navy | Minesweeper | 205d | 97 | 26 Sep 1941 | Sold 1947 for scrapping' - corroborating builder, both names, in-service date, and disposal independently of DANFS/NavSource. The same table documents the four-hull rolling rename across consecutive Greenport hulls (AMc-61 Adamant>Acme; AMc-62 Advance>Adamant; AMc-63 Aggressor>Advance; AMc-64 Alliance>Aggressor). Program context from the same dataset: 70 wooden-hulled Accentor-class coastal minesweepers built in 15 boatyards; the Suffolk Times documents Greenport Basin's WWII Navy-contract minesweeper construction 'requiring non-magnetic construction so as not to attract mines' - i.e., wood hulls.

    Limitations
Shipyard-history compilation - secondary but independently corroborating; displacement 205 t is a third figure vs DANFS ~185 t and NavSource 224 t (measure-type variance, unresolved). The 'non-magnetic/wooden hull' characterization is program-level, not a materials manifest - says nothing about insulation, gaskets, or other shipboard materials. No asbestos information.

    Finding
Name correction documented: the hull supplied in this batch as 'USS Advance (AMC-62)' served as USS Adamant - 'Advance' was her laid-down name only (31 March - 17 May 1941), renamed before launch and before Navy service. The name 'USS Advance' as an in-service ship belongs to a different hull: sister AMc-63, laid down 12 April 1941 as Aggressor at the same yard, renamed Advance 23 May 1941, in service 10 October 1941, struck 3 January 1946, sold for scrap 3 March 1947 - same class, same builder, nearly identical dates, DIFFERENT hull. A third collision: USS Advance (AM-510/MSO-510), a later larger ocean minesweeper covered by a separate Atlas record. 'USS Advance' hits in any source must be hull-number-verified before attaching to this record.

    Limitations
Documents the naming collision so the record is auditable and the supplied designation is corrected rather than silently adopted; does not alter the AMc-62 identity or timeline. The rolling four-hull rename means 'Advance' and 'Aggressor' each attached briefly to two different Greenport hulls during April-May 1941 - early-1941 construction-phase references to 'Advance' could mean either AMc-62 or AMc-63 and are excluded unless hull-numbered.

    Finding
Design-level assessment of the asbestos-relevant profile: this craft carried a single 400-bhp Union L8 diesel on one shaft in a ~185-224 ton wooden hull - no boilers, no steam distribution system, no turbines. The principal asbestos vectors documented aboard steam-era naval vessels - boiler and steam-drum lagging, steam-line insulation, turbine and condenser insulation - are absent by design in this type. Residual era-typical applications remain plausible but are undocumented for this hull: diesel exhaust and muffler insulation, engine gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, accommodation joiner materials, and brake linings on winch/windlass and sweep gear.

Ship's company (design complement 17); Greenport Basin construction trades 1941
    Limitations
Class/design inference, not a ship-specific finding: the absence of a steam plant removes the dominant asbestos vectors but does not prove the absence of asbestos aboard - WWII-era gaskets, packing, electrical components, and interior materials could still contain asbestos, and the Navy outfitting specification applied at the New York Navy Yard fitting-out is undocumented. Nothing in the cited sources names an asbestos product installed on this hull. Does not establish presence, absence, exposure, or causation for any individual.

    Finding
Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era under which this small diesel craft was built (1941) at a Navy-contract yard - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization in ship construction.

    Limitations
Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel, its class, or the Greenport yard, does not establish that asbestos was aboard this hull, and does not address quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. The study's framing centers on large-vessel steam-ship construction programs; it applies with reduced force to a 97-ft wooden diesel craft and most plausibly to the builder-yard workforce rather than the crew.

Special List #44 indexes this hull's deck logs in the National Archives deck-log collection (RG 24): 'AMC-62 (Adamant), 9/26/1941 - 6/30/1942' - one file unit covering the first ~9 months of service (New York Navy Yard fitting-out through the 5th Naval District Inshore Patrol period). The remainder of her career - Boston/1st Naval District service (June 1942 - June 1945) and Charleston/6th Naval District (June - December 1945) - has no indexed coverage in this collection. The logs are physical holdings only: the vessel does not appear in NARA's 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' digitized listing (which is concentrated on Vietnam-era logs).

The vessel does not appear in the Naval Vessel Register (NVR excludes vessels disposed of before 1987). CourtListener opinion surface: 'USS Adamant' returned zero hits; 'AMC-62'/'AMc-62' returned zero hits; 'USS Advance' (the collision name) returned zero hits; the bare-name 'Adamant' search returned ~10,843 opinions consisting of name collisions (Adamant plaster/manufacturing corporate parties - 'adamant' is a building-plaster product name). RECAP docket-type searches were deferred mid-session by fleet-quota throttling - logged as a residual gap with the completed portion recorded honestly.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - WWII-era construction and New York Navy Yard outfitting leave residual uncertainty for gaskets, packing, electrical and engine-adjacent insulation even in a small wooden diesel craft. The litigation surface is incompletely searched: opinion queries ran clean across all three name/hull forms, but RECAP docket-type searches could not be executed (fleet-wide CL quota pacing) - re-run is a documented gap. Does not establish presence, absence, exposure, causation, or legal eligibility.
