- DANFS (NHHC): named for Agenor, 'a character in Greek mythology, a son of Poseidon'; originally projected as tank landing ship LST-490, redesignated ARL-3 and named Agenor 1943-01-13; laid down 1943-01-24 by Kaiser Co., Inc., Vancouver, Wash. (see correction row - Vancouver attribution contradicted by the Kaiser yard registers); launched 1943-04-03; commissioned at San Francisco 1943-08-20, Lt. Argyle W. Markley in command. WWII service: from December 1943 through 1944-06-09 provided repair services to landing craft in the Solomon, Russell, and Marshall Islands; departed for the Marianas 1944-06-09; convoy attacked by Japanese torpedo bombers 1944-06-17 (several near misses); arrived off Saipan 06-24; assigned to salvage group TG 52.7 under constant air-raid threat; moved to Tinian 07-15; sailed to Guam early August, reported to TF 53, based there through 10-02, then shifted to Ulithi; returned to Guam 1945-02-10 to prepare for Iwo Jima; arrived off Iwo Jima 02-20, joined TG 51.3, working under air attack and heavy seas until 06-25; anchored at Saipan 06-29; reported to Service Squadron 10, departed for Hawaii overhaul, reached Pearl Harbor 07-18 and entered the naval shipyard - still under repair at war's end; served in the Hawaiian operating area until placed out of commission, in reserve, 1946-11-15. Transferred to the government of France 1951-03-02 under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program (MDAP); stricken from the Navy Register 1951-03-26. Three battle stars for WWII service. DANFS spec line: dp. 4100; l. 328'; b. 50'; dr. 11'2"; s. 11.6 k.; complement 253; a. 1 3", 8 40mm, 8 20mm; cl. Achelous.

The adjacent Kaiser Vancouver WA table shows that yard's LST production running only from LST-446 through LST-475 (yard hulls 153-179, MC 966-995) before switching to escort carriers - LST-490 is not in the Vancouver build list, so a Vancouver build is excluded.

WWII-era Navy muster rolls for this hull exist in the Ancestry-digitized 'U.S. World War II Navy Muster Rolls, 1938-1949' series (per NARA's published guidance), but the catalog's SPA interface prevented enumeration of hull-specific muster-roll/deck-log identifiers this session.

- Era/design inference for a diesel-powered LST-hull auxiliary: the ship had no boilers (2x GM 12-567A diesels, 1,800 shp). Asbestos-relevant applications typical of the type and era: diesel exhaust lagging and manifold gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation-space insulation, machinery packing - plus ARL-specific repair-shop outfit (machine, welding, and fitting shops) contemporaneously stocked with asbestos-containing consumables such as welding blankets, insulation cement, and gasket sheet stock. The construction period (Kaiser Richmond Yard No. 4, Jan-Aug 1943 incl. conversion fitting) fell inside the window when the federal government had reserved asbestos supply for shipbuilding.

- Source discrepancies resolved/logged: (a) Builder - DANFS and NavSource say 'Kaiser Co., Inc., Vancouver, Wash./WA', but shipscribe's BuShips-derived register gives 'Kaiser Cargo, Richmond #4', and shipbuildinghistory's Kaiser Richmond No. 4 table lists LST-490 at yard hull 45 (MC 1010) with keel/launch/delivery dates matching DANFS exactly (24 Jan / 3 Apr / 20 Aug 1943), while the Kaiser Vancouver table ends its LST run at LST-475 (yard hulls 153-179, MC 966-995) - LST-490 was not built at Vancouver. Resolved: Richmond, CA carried; 'Vancouver' is a DANFS error propagated by NavSource. (b) Commissioning date - 1943-08-20 (DANFS, shipscribe, shipbuildinghistory delivery date) vs 1943-08-30 (NavSource header and CO-roster start for LT Markley); 20 August carried on three-source concurrence. (c) Taiwan name - NavSource 'ROCS Wu Tai (ARL-336)' vs shipscribe 'SUNG SHAN' vs shipbuildinghistory 'Shung Shan (ARL 336)...to Japan 1974 as Wu Tai (AP 520)'; secondary synthesis (Wikipedia, citing Silverstone 2009 p.171 and Taiwan navy sources) reconciles: acquired as Shung Shan (ARL-336) 1957, renamed Tai Wu (AP-520) 1968 - both names are correct for different periods. (d) Final disposition - shipbuildinghistory 'to Japan 1974..., disposition unknown' vs Wikipedia (Silverstone-cited) ROCN decommission April 1983; unresolved, final fate unknown. (e) Complement - DANFS 253 = NavSource 22+231 = shipscribe 253: consistent. (f) Armament - DANFS totals (1x3", 8x40mm, 8x20mm) equal NavSource mounts (1x3"/50 DP, 2x quad 40mm, 6x twin 20mm): consistent. (g) Displacement - DANFS 4,100 vs NavSource 3,900 lt / 4,100 fl vs shipscribe 2,125 lt / 4,100 lim - light-vs-limiting basis differences, both framings logged. State, Bank of New York v. Agenor, People v. Agenor Roman); no hit names the ship and none is asbestos litigation. '"ARL-3"' (type=o) returned 16 hits, all term collisions (assessor parcel codes, docket-letter suffixes such as '(ARL)', judge initials) - no ship reference. '"LST-490"' (type=o) returned zero hits. '"Agenor"' RECAP docket index (type=r) returned 147 dockets, all personal-name matters (predominantly bankruptcy filings); no ship-related docket. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming the hull under any searched designation. Supplementary non-CL coverage: an indexed-web litigation search ('"USS Agenor" OR "ARL-3" OR "LST-490" asbestos mesothelioma lawsuit') returned only decisions naming other hulls (USS McGinty, USS Rowan, USS Hollister, USS Badger), and a VA BVA-decisions web search surfaced no Agenor-named claim.

- Finding
- Archival leads (not retrieved - no spend authorized): NARA RG 19 (Bureau of Ships) holds the hull's ship-engineering drawings (naId 153714105 hull series; naIds 175668046/175668047 microfilm - the likeliest documents for a ship-specific materials/insulation schedule) plus conversion plans/specifications for the LST-to-ARL program - Gibbs & Cox was design agent and Matson Navigation performed this hull's conversion at San Francisco, so design-agent files and any surviving Matson work orders/contracts would document the conversion outfit. The ship's own WWII records exist: the 1944-06-17 anti-aircraft action report (naId 78504470, RG 38) and WWII muster rolls in the Ancestry-digitized series. WWII deck logs for USS Agenor (RG 24, NARA College Park) were not enumerated this session (catalog SPA interface). Post-USN documentation - French naval records for Vulcain (Service Historique de la Defense) and ROCN disposal records for Shung Shan/Tai Wu - is the unexplored track for the hull's 1951-1983 material condition and final disposition.
