Gillespie; placed in service at the New York Navy Yard 1941-10-10, Lt. Walter E. Goering, USNR, in charge. Completed outfitting at Brooklyn, moved to Norfolk; trained in mine detection and sweeping under the Naval Mine Warfare School at Yorktown, VA; operated under the Commandant, 5th Naval District, based at Little Creek under Commander, Inshore Patrol, until late May 1944; reassigned to the 1st Naval District and operated along the New England coast until mid-June 1945; returned briefly to Norfolk, then to Charleston, S.C., in July 1945, reporting to the Commandant, 6th Naval District, for disposition. Placed out of service 1945-12-06, berthed in the Wando River; struck from the Navy list 1946-01-03; sold for scrapping 1947-03-03 to Mr. Lloyd Lambert of Baltimore, Md. Particulars block: dp. 185; l. 97'1"; b. 22'0"; dr. 9'0"; s. 10.0 k.; cpl. 17; a. 2 .50-cal. mg.; cl. Accentor.

- Finding
- Name-collision correction, verified against the primary record: this hull (AMc-63) carried the name 'Aggressor' only as a laid-down construction name, 1941-04-12 to 1941-05-23 - she was renamed Advance before launching and never entered service as 'USS Aggressor.' The vacated name was simultaneously reassigned: sister hull AMc-64, laid down at the same yard as Alliance, was renamed Aggressor on the same date (1941-05-23) and served under that name (shipbuildinghistory Greenport yard list shows AMc-63 'Aggressor/Advance' and AMc-64 'Alliance/Aggressor' - a coordinated one-position name shuffle across the four Greenport hulls AMc-61/62/63/64, in which AMc-62 yielded the name Advance that this hull received). Separately, USS Advance (MSO-510), a 1955-58 Acme-class ocean minesweeper, shares this hull's post-rename name and is a different, non-duplicate hull (DANFS 'Advance VI'; already in this database as uss-advance-am510).

- Corrects the supplied VERIFY name 'USS Aggressor (AMC-63)' to the canonical service name USS Advance. Confirms non-duplication against AMc-64 (the hull that actually served as Aggressor) and MSO-510 (same-name different hull). AMc-64's own rename date rests on the shipbuildinghistory yard table and a Wikipedia disambiguation summary - consistent sources, but AMc-64's own DANFS page was not directly fetched this pass (NHHC link rot); the 1941-05-23 shuffle date for the other three hulls is documented in the yard table as name-pairs only.

- Finding
- Class configuration: the Accentor/Acme class were small wooden-hulled coastal minesweepers ('wooden-hulled ships designed for inshore operations'), about 70 built 1941-42 in 15 boatyards to one basic 97-ft, 10-knot design; diesel engine of about 400 hp; complement 17; armament two .50-caliber machine guns. AMc-63 is listed in the class unit table. A wooden hull and diesel propulsion mean the class carried no boilers or steam plant - the machinery category most associated with documented WWII-era asbestos insulation aboard larger combatants.

- Limitations
- Class-level specification; documents the type's plant and hull form, not materials aboard this hull. Absence of a steam plant removes the most commonly documented WWII asbestos pathway but does not establish that no asbestos-containing material was aboard (gaskets, exhaust insulation, electrical insulation, fireproofing compounds remain undocumented either way). NavSource's per-hull spec block (Union L8 diesel) corroborates the diesel plant at hull level but is volunteer-compiled (see ev-05).

- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program context in which this 1941 wooden-hulled minesweeper was built - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization across naval construction.

The page misspells the builder 'Greenpoint Basin ... Greenpoint' - the correct name and place per DANFS and shipbuildinghistory is Greenport Basin & Construction Co., Greenport, NY. - Finding
- NARA's official asbestos-research guide identifies the record series that would document hull-level material specifications for this ship: RG 19 Bureau of Ships general correspondence filed under hull designation 'AMc63' and class correspondence under the Accentor class file (class namesake AMc-36), builder contract files for Greenport Basin & Construction Co. under the Navy Filing Manual 'QM' private-yard designation, RG 19 minesweeper/minelayer General Information Books, and Ship Engineering Drawings arranged by hull number - the guide names S103 (Booklets of General Plans), S39 (Insulation and Lagging), and S48 (Piping) as the codes most relevant to asbestos research. The guide covers Navy materiel 1941-1961, spanning this hull's entire existence. An AMc-63-specific drawing or GIB volume, if it survives, is the realistic path to any ship-specific materials finding.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, court finding, or docketed asbestos case naming USS Advance / USS Aggressor / AMc-63 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion searches for the exact names "USS Advance" and "USS Aggressor" returned zero results; the hull-number variants "AMC-63" and "AMc-63" each returned the same single unrelated hit (Caemint Food, Inc. v. Lloyd Brasileiro, 647 F.2d 347 (2d Cir. 1981) - an admiralty cargo-damage dispute over a shipment of canned corned beef; the AMC-63 string is a cargo/document mark, not this vessel, and the case is not asbestos litigation). The RECAP/docket search for "USS Advance" returned zero results; "AMc-63" returned 11 unrelated dockets (AMC Entertainment, mortgage-company, bankruptcy, employment, and NRA litigation - all 'AMC' string collisions, none referencing a vessel or asbestos). A mesothelioma marketing site lists 'USS Advance' in a generic ~300-ship minesweeper table with no hull specificity - excluded per source rules (no authoritative content, and it does not distinguish AMc-63 from MSO-510).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941 diesel minesweeper is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials, and the hull was scrapped in 1947 leaving nothing to survey. The CourtListener sweep (exact name + hull number, opinion and docket/RECAP collections) completed in full; asbestos-qualified narrowing adds nothing against a zero/noise result set. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
