- Locator
- NVR SHIPSDETAIL_AKL_35 page: UIC/Class/Status/Stricken/Custodian fields
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The official Naval Vessel Register lists 'NO NAME (AKL 35) (ex - FS 383)' as a LIGHT CARGO SHIP, UIC 01216, NVR class grouping 'AKL 1', with status 'Disposed of through the Security Assistance Program (SAP), transferred, cash sale, ex-US fleet hull foreign military sale case number assigned,' date status changed 11/01/1974, stricken date 11/15/1974, and custodian KOREA. All milestone date fields (award, keel, launch, delivery, commission) are blank in the register entry.

- Limitations
- NVR entry carries custody and milestone data only - no materials, construction-detail, or asbestos information. Confirms the hull was never a named/commissioned USS vessel ('NO NAME'), consistent with USNS/MSTS status. NVR notes ships disposed before 1987 are added gradually; the page survives via Wayback capture. Does not document ROK-era disposition after the 1974 sale.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII, the era and program under which this Army Design 381 freighter was built (contract September 1943, completed July 1944).

- Population
- WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (class context)
- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarship only; does not name this vessel, its class, or its builder, and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. As a diesel vessel, this hull lacked the boiler/steam-line insulation scope typical of steamships - era inference must not be read as hull proof.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, government inspection, or docketed case naming this hull was found in the public sources searched under any of its identities (FS-383, LT Thomas W Wigle, T-AKL-35, AKL-35, Ma San/AKL-909). No DANFS entry exists for the vessel (confirmed absent from NHHC). CourtListener returned zero qualifying hits - all matches were name collisions (prisoner civil-rights docket, juvenile matter, commercial trucking dispute; none vessel-related).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - WWII-era construction is consistent with era-typical asbestos-containing materials. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. Korean-language ROK Navy records were not searched.

[7]Shipscribe class notes (documenting the 1 Nov 1950 MSTS-Army mutual transfer agreement, classifications approved 31 Oct 1950) vs. NavSource T-AKL-35 page (MSTS acquisition dated '1 July 1950') [other_primary]
- Locator
- Shipscribe AKL37 class notes; NavSource archives/09/14/1435.htm
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource (a volunteer-maintained photo archive used as a discovery lead only, per batch convention) dates Navy/MSTS acquisition of this hull '1 July 1950.' The documented record is a mutual MSTS-Army Chief of Transportation agreement transferring the Alaska FS vessels on 1 November 1950, with Navy classification and hull numbers approved 31 October 1950. The 1 November 1950 date is adopted; '1 July 1950' is not supported by the located authoritative record.

[8]Congressional Medal of Honor Society, recipient record for Second Lieutenant Thomas W. Wigle, U.S. Army, Company K, 135th Infantry, 34th Infantry Division [other_primary]
- Locator
- CMOHS recipient profile; Shipscribe ship notes for the naming linkage
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The hull's Army name 'LT THOMAS W WIGLE' (per Shipscribe register compilation) corresponds to Second Lieutenant Thomas W. Wigle, posthumous Medal of Honor recipient for actions at Monte Frassino, Italy, September 14, 1944 (died of wounds September 16, 1944). Sister FS vessels carried names of other Medal of Honor recipients (FS-343 SGT Ellis R Weicht; FS-398 CPL John J Pinder Jr; FS-238 CPL Harry R Harr), consistent with the Army convention of naming FS vessels for Medal of Honor recipients.
