Project reporting for the main teak-deck replacement (five phases; Construction Executive gives the window October 2021-October 2024 planned and reports completion about seven months early, in March 2024; $8.5M budget per CE, $8.05M bonded per the surety; GC Youngblood-Barrett Construction & Engineering, teak subcontractor Teakdecking Systems, surety Old Republic Surety) documents containment systems erected over each deck work area for 'the removal and abatement of the original teak planks and any hazardous materials,' and states that 'safety measures are in place to contain lead, asbestos, and other hazardous materials during demolition' with workers in HEPA-filtered hazmat suits - the first public ship-specific record tying asbestos-control work to this hull.

    Limitations
Surety/trade project reporting documents hazardous-material containment during deck demolition; it does not identify which specific deck components contained asbestos, does not quantify ACM, and does not establish any individual exposure. Not a government survey. Does not address the rest of the vessel.

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Asbestos personal-injury complaint Exhibit A lists ALABAMA (BB-60) among 22 vessels at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, where plaintiff George W. Turner, a sheetmetal worker (helper) out of Shop 17, alleges he worked and was exposed to asbestos June 1944-September 1945; the complaint text states he worked 'on the ships listed above' near trades tearing out asbestos-containing insulation (asbestos cloth, pipecovering, cement) and carried damaged asbestos-containing insulation off the ships. Plaintiff was diagnosed with mesothelioma on or about May 2010; the identical ship list reappears in the 2012 survival/wrongful-death refiling. Verified this session by OCR of the scanned exhibit (ALABAMA (BB-60) on exhibit p. 17).

    Population
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard sheetmetal worker (helper), Shop 17, 1944-45; mesothelioma
    Limitations
Pleading-stage allegation; the vessel is named among 22 ships at the yard in one plaintiff's exhibit, not an adjudicated finding of exposure aboard this hull. Does not establish which products were aboard, individual exposure, or causation. The ship's documented Puget Sound Naval Shipyard drydock/overhaul (18 Jan-25 Feb 1945, work to 17 Mar; and 1946 inactivation overhaul) corroborates presence within the alleged window.

As built 1940-42 at Norfolk Navy Yard, Alabama's eight Foster Wheeler boilers and four Westinghouse geared turbines (130,000 shp class design, per the NHL nomination) and associated steam piping, valves, and auxiliaries were insulated under wartime Navy specifications; boiler/fireroom insulation, steam-line lagging, deck tile, and bulkhead materials were standard class-era asbestos applications.

    Finding
Documented exposure-relevant work periods for this hull: construction at Norfolk Navy Yard 1940-42; service with the British Home Fleet 1943 then Pacific carrier task forces; brief drydocking at Pearl Harbor Navy Yard Jan 1944 (propeller replacement); Puget Sound Naval Shipyard drydock/overhaul 18 Jan-25 Feb 1945 (work to 17 Mar) and inactivation overhaul there from Feb 1946; decommissioned at Seattle Jan 9, 1947; stricken Jun 1, 1962; awarded to the State of Alabama Jun 16, 1964, turned over Jul 7, towed to Mobile Bay (arrived Sep 14, 1964; opened to public Jan 9, 1965); early-2000s hull renovations (~$15M, Encyclopedia of Alabama); damaged by Hurricane Katrina Aug 2005, repaired and reopened early 2006; five-phase main teak-deck replacement 2021-2024.

    Population
Norfolk Navy Yard construction trades; Pearl Harbor and Puget Sound yard workers (1944-46); crew; museum restoration contractors
    Limitations
The yard periods are ship-specific and documented; the asbestos rip-out/re-insulation scope of wartime yard periods is inferred from era practice, not documented per-hull. Hazmat containment during the 2021-24 deck work is documented (ev-01); the early-2000s $15M hull renovation and Katrina repairs have no public ACM documentation.

    Finding
No vessel-wide asbestos survey, ACM inventory, or museum hazmat disclosure for USS Alabama was located in the public sources searched; ship-specific asbestos records consist of the 2021-24 deck-project containment reporting and a pleading-stage litigation artifact. No HAER documentation exists for the vessel (LOC holds only HAER AL-104 photos of the Tensaw River bridge taken from her deck). NVR does not list BB-60 (pre-1987 disposals excluded).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the ship retains substantial WWII-era fabric. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present beyond the documented deck-project work; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
The BuShips Ships' Data January 1945 battleship machinery table lists BB-60 with Westinghouse geared turbines and 8 Foster Wheeler boilers (130,000 shp class plant) - a contemporaneous primary record of the machinery installed aboard this hull, matching the NHL nomination's '8-Foster Wheeler' boilers and '4 sets, Westinghouse' turbines.

Ships' Data is a January 1945 snapshot recording as-delivered machinery; it does not document insulation material or post-delivery changes. Machinery vendor is relevant because plaintiff product-identification often keys on turbine/boiler makers.

  11. [11]NPS NHL nomination NHLS/86000083 (Foster Wheeler boilers / Westinghouse turbines) + BuShips Ships' Data Vol. 1 (Jan 1945) machinery table - against circulating secondary-source machinery attributions for BB-60 [other_primary]

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Circulating secondary sources attribute Babcock & Wilcox boilers and General Electric turbines to USS Alabama (BB-60); the primary record (NHL nomination + BuShips Ships' Data 1945) establishes 8 Foster Wheeler boilers and 4 Westinghouse turbine sets aboard this hull. The B&W/GE fit belongs to sisters South Dakota (BB-57) and Massachusetts (BB-59).

    Limitations
Corrects a vendor mis-attribution in non-authoritative sources; no competitor or law-firm source is relied on for any claim in this record. Machinery vendor affects which defendants' products are plausibly alleged aboard; it does not itself document asbestos content.
