- Finding
- DANFS identifies this hull as Thomaston-class LSD-33: laid down 11 October 1954 at Pascagoula, Mississippi, by Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp.; launched 20 January 1956; and commissioned 24 August 1956, Capt. James L. Semmes commanding. Its specification block gives displacement 11,270, length 510 feet, beam 84 feet, draft 19 feet, speed 21 knots, and complement 756. DANFS also records a 1962 Todd Shipyard interim overhaul in San Francisco, a 1963 Bethlehem Steel overhaul at Long Beach, and a January 1970 restricted availability that repaired deck plating, cranes, and a boiler.

[3]NavSource Online, Amphibious Photo Archive, USS Alamo (LSD-33), vessel header and specifications [other_primary]

- NavSource header timeline and specifications block
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource's vessel archive records that Alamo was launched at Ingalls Pascagoula on 20 January 1956; commissioned 24 August 1956; decommissioned and loaned to Brazil on 12 November 1990 as NDD Rio de Janeiro (G-31); and struck from the U.S. Naval Register and sold to Brazil on 24 January 2001. Its specification block lists two 600-psi D-type boilers, two steam turbines, two propellers, and 24,000 shp.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer archival compilation, not the Naval Vessel Register. It supplies a cross-check on milestones and machinery, but its steam-plant description is not an asbestos inventory and does not establish asbestos aboard this hull.

- Opinion, factual background (Jefferson Yates employment, asbestos exposure, and stipulated cause of death)
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Builder-yard asbestos context: Ingalls Shipbuilding, Inc. v. Director, OWCP, 519 U.S. 248 (1997), recites that shipfitter Jefferson Yates worked at Ingalls's Pascagoula shipyards from 1953 through 1967, was exposed to asbestos in his workplace, and had an asbestosis claim whose compensability Ingalls admitted; the parties stipulated that his 1986 death resulted from workplace asbestos exposure. This covers Alamo's 1954-56 construction period at the same yard.

- This is a yard-level worker-exposure record, not a vessel-material record. It names neither Alamo nor her equipment and cannot establish asbestos installation, disturbance, or exposure aboard this hull.

[5]Walker v. Blackmer Pump Co., 367 F. Supp. 3d 360 (E.D. Pa. 2019), Civ. No. 16-5349, Doc. 62 [court_record]

- Finding type
- litigation_product_id
- Finding
- Same-class machinery evidence: in Walker v. Blackmer Pump Co., 367 F. Supp. 3d 360 (E.D. Pa. 2019), a summary-judgment opinion recites plaintiff's evidence from a Navy 'Synopsis of Machinery and Hull Data' covering ships identified in the opinion as the LSD-28 class (LSD-28 through LSD-31). The opinion describes documents concerning asbestos packing, gaskets, insulating rings, and 85% magnesia insulation for pumps assigned to sister ship USS Plymouth Rock. Alamo is a Thomaston-class sister, but it was not the litigated hull and is not among the hulls enumerated in the opinion's synopsis description.

- Population
- Plymouth Rock crew and repair personnel; Thomaston-class machinery context
- Limitations
- Summary-judgment-stage recitation of litigant evidence, not a trial finding. The service vessel was Plymouth Rock; the opinion's quoted machinery synopsis enumerates LSD-28 through LSD-31, not Alamo (LSD-33). It is a same-class research lead only and does not prove any product, asbestos presence, disturbance, or exposure aboard Alamo.

- HRD-80-2, 'Navy's Policy on Use of Asbestos' section
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO's 1979 Navy shipyard review records that Navy thermal-insulation specifications were revised to asbestos-free materials in 1973, but asbestos insulation continued to be installed in ship repairs as late as May 1978; Navy policy in 1975 removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or repair-required, later shifting to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas. Alamo's DANFS-recorded 1962 and 1963 overhauls predate those policies, and its 1970 restricted availability also predates the 1973 revision.

[7]NHHC, Navy Department Library cruise-book collection index; NHHC Collection 94 finding aid [other_primary]

- Cruise-book index, Alamo LSD-33 entries; Collection 94 PDF, Box 245, item 34
- Finding type

- Finding
- Archival leads: NHHC's Navy Department Library cruise-book index lists Alamo (LSD-33) cruise books for 1966, 1967-68, 1969, 1972, 1974, 1977, 1980, and 1986. NHHC Collection 94's finding aid lists 'USS Alamo (LSD 33): Decommissioning and Changes, 1956-1990' in Box 245. Neither indexed description establishes asbestos content, but both identify records for any future hull-specific document search.

[8]Batch 5822 research ledger, official-source review and exclusions [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-alamo-lsd33-01 through -08
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Negative finding for the completed non-CourtListener review: no ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, material list, hazmat disclosure, or authoritative court record naming USS Alamo (LSD-33) was located in the reviewed NHHC/DANFS material, NHHC archival indexes, NavSource archive, GAO material, or official-source web results. Marketing pages and a JT Thorpe ship-list search hit that merely list Alamo were excluded because they do not provide authoritative, hull-specific supporting documentation.

- Limitations
- This is a bounded negative finding, not proof that asbestos was absent. The required authenticated CourtListener exact-name and hull-number requests did not return because the fleet pacing helper remained pending beyond the tool window; therefore litigation search completeness is blocked and no CourtListener 'no result' is asserted.
