- Finding
- Cahto-class large harbor tug Alamuchee (YTB-228) was laid down on 3 July 1944 by Mathis Yacht Building Co. in Camden, New Jersey; launched 12 February 1945; placed in service 4 May 1945; complement 12. Assigned to the Eighth Naval District, she operated at New Orleans for about 15 years. Stricken in April 1960 and transferred to Louisiana in August 1960, she served the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans as a firefighting tug until 1965 and was sold at public auction to George W. Whiteman on 9 August 1965.

- Limitations
- Official NHHC indexed text supports the stated identity and chronology, but direct page retrieval returned HTTP 404 on 2026-09-25; the HistoryCentral reproduction corroborates the main chronology with transcription defects. Neither source establishes asbestos content, individual exposure, propulsion, or fate after the 1965 sale. 'Placed in service' is preserved rather than converted to 'commissioned'.

[2]National Archives, Ship Plan Index, ALAMUCHEE YT-228 entry, catalog identifier 153716475 [other_primary]
- Locator
- Alphabetical index, ALAMUCHEE row; catalog ID 153716475
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The National Archives Ship Plan Index lists 'ALAMUCHEE | YT-228 | 19 | Hull series of Ship Engineering Drawings | 153716475.' This identifies YT-228 as a designation associated with this named hull; NHHC uses YTB-228 for the in-service tug.

- Undated index entry for 1940s hull
- Limitations
- The index verifies the YT-228 identifier and existence of a plan-series catalog entry. It does not date the redesignation, show the drawings, identify installed materials, or prove asbestos aboard.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's ship-specific index entry 153716475 points to RG 19 hull-series engineering drawings for Alamuchee. NARA's asbestos research guide identifies S39 insulation and lagging and S48 piping as potentially relevant drawing categories, while warning that those categories are relatively rare in the paper hull series. The Alamuchee drawings themselves were not retrieved or inspected.

- Limitations
- Only the catalog index and NARA research guidance were examined. Whether the entry contains insulation, material specifications, asbestos references, or any usable drawings is unknown. This is a retrieval lead, not an asbestos finding.

- Locator
- search_ledger sl-uss-alamuchee-yt228-01 through -03
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The NHHC vessel history and public NARA plan index reviewed for this draft contain no statement identifying asbestos or an asbestos-containing product aboard Alamuchee. No hull drawing, survey, or abatement record was inspected; the asbestos status is unknown.

- Source review 2026-09-24
- Limitations
- NHHC text was reviewed through its indexed copy because the direct page returned HTTP 404; this limits a full-text negative finding. Absence of an asbestos statement in inspected text is not proof that asbestos was absent. The underlying engineering drawings were not reviewed, and the CourtListener name/hull sweep remains incomplete pending fleet pacing; no litigation absence is asserted here.
