- Finding
- DANFS record for this hull: launched 15 August 1944 by Bethlehem Steel Co., Quincy, Mass.; sponsored by Miss M. Diachenko, cousin of Watertender Second Class Alex Maxwell Diachenko (killed 10 March 1943 in the Eberle boarding-party action against the blockade runner Karin; posthumous Silver Star); commissioned 8 December 1944 as USS Alex Diachenko (APD-123), LCDR S. R. Jackson, USNR; renamed Diachenko 1 March 1945; spec block Crosley class, dp. 1,450, 306', 24 kt, cpl. 256. WWII: Norfolk departure 31 January 1945, Leyte 21 March; troop lifts for Philippines reoccupation (Legaspi 1 April, Police Harbor 17 April); Australian troops to Brunei Bay 10-16 June; Balikpapan assault 1 July. Postwar: Leyte-Jinsen lifts, 62d Chinese Army Haiphong-Formosa, Tsingtao/Shanghai/Taku China service. Korea: UDT support from Sasebo, Wonsan raids, coastal bombardment Wonsan-Chongjin, Kojo demonstration landing October 1952; two tours (1950-51, 1952). 1955: flagship of the Evacuation Unit Commander at Haiphong for Operation Passage to Freedom. Placed in commission in reserve 1 April 1959; decommissioned 30 June 1959. Two WWII and six Korean battle stars.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The DANFS entry ends at the 1959 decommissioning and does not cover the 1960s Vietnam service or the reported 1971 recommissioning. [3]NavSource Online Amphibious Photo Archive, USS Diachenko (LPR-123) ex APD-123 (post-1959 service record, campaign tables, CO list, awards display, APD spec block; secondary compilation cross-checked against DANFS, NavalCoverMuseum, uboat.net) [other_primary]

- Finding
- NavSource service record extending DANFS: recommissioned in 1961 at San Diego (CO list resumes with LCDR L. A. Dwyer 8 June 1962); Vietnam service windows 1965-1968 with campaign credits - Vietnam Advisory, Vietnam Defense, Counteroffensive Phase II, Tet Counteroffensive (5-21 March 1968), Phase IV, Phase V (to 12 August 1968); awards display includes Combat Action Ribbon (18 March 1968), Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with five campaign stars, RVN Gallantry Cross unit citation; redesignated LPR-123 1 January 1969; decommissioned 30 July 1969; recommissioned 1 November 1971; struck from the Naval Register 15 September 1974; sold for scrapping 1 June 1975.

- Postwar/Vietnam-era crew; UDT and reconnaissance detachments embarked
- Limitations
- NavSource is a secondary volunteer compilation, not an official record; pre-1960 entries agree with DANFS verbatim. The 1 November 1971 recommissioning has no corroborating detail anywhere located - no CO list entries after July 1969, no activity, and no final decommissioning date - and NavalCoverMuseum's timeline omits it entirely (NCM: decommissioned 31 October 1969, straight to strike 1974). Conflicts carried in gaps; 1971-74 service treated as reported-but-undocumented.

[4]NavSource APD specification block (Crosley-class hull details) + Atlas shipyard dataset, Fore River Shipyard and Bethlehem Shipbuilding records (tier-3 asbestos-documented yards) [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource APD spec block; shipyards.json records 'fore-river-shipyard' and 'bethlehem-shipbuilding'
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/yard inference: a Crosley-class high-speed transport built mid-1944 at Bethlehem Steel's Fore River yard would have carried era-standard asbestos applications consistent with a steam turbo-electric hull - boiler insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings; both Atlas yard records for the Quincy site ('fore-river-shipyard', 'bethlehem-shipbuilding') are tier-3 asbestos-documented (Fore River pipefitter litigation 1967-70; Bethlehem shipyard worker cohort studies; EPA Sparrows Point record).

- Population
- Bethlehem Steel Quincy/Fore River construction trades 1944; crew 1944-1974
- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The boiler manufacturer is itself disputed across secondary sources (Wikipedia reads Combustion Engineering DR; the NavSource generic APD block reads Babcock & Wilcox 'D' Express) - flagged in gaps. No ACM quantity, location, or individual exposure is established.

[5]CourtListener API v4 searches (opinion index): 'Diachenko' 21 hits - all surname collisions; 'DE-690' 8 hits - all identifier collisions; 'APD-123', 'APD 123', 'LPR-123', 'USS Diachenko', 'Alex Diachenko' - 0 hits each [court_record]
- Locator
- CourtListener API v4 search results; search_ledger rows sl-uss-diachenko-apd123-03 through -05
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- CourtListener opinion-index sweep returned no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this vessel: every 'Diachenko' hit is a person-surname collision (e.g., Diachenko v. Commonwealth, Pa. Commw. 1983, unemployment compensation), every 'DE-690' hit is a docket-number/string collision in unrelated matters, and the exact-phrase hull-number and ship-name queries ('APD-123', 'APD 123', 'LPR-123', 'USS Diachenko', 'Alex Diachenko') each returned zero results.

- Limitations
- Opinion-index sweep complete for exact name and all three hull numbers; the RECAP docket-index 'Diachenko' query was blocked by fleet pacing at record build time (logged in search_ledger). Absence of located litigation does not prove no claim was ever filed; state-court and settled matters are largely invisible to the index.

[6]NARA RG 24 'Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, 1941-1992' - digitized deck logs for Diachenko (APD-123), e.g. May 1963 log, NARA ID 174032260 (Blue Water Navy Deck Log Project scan); indexed via DPLA [other_primary]

- DPLA item 395c1b728434c40c0b79f40fe9b82bc2; NARA Catalog NAID 174032260; NARA series 594258
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Hull-specific primary records exist and are partly digitized: monthly deck logs for Diachenko (APD-123) are in NARA Record Group 24 and at least the May 1963 log is digitized in the National Archives Catalog (NAID 174032260) via the VA Blue Water Navy Deck Log Project. Deck logs establish duty stations, underway periods, and crew context; NARA RG 19 General Information Books and Bethlehem-Fore River contract files are the leads for hull-level material specifications.

- 1963 (located log); logs span service years

- Crew serving aboard per log month (e.g., May 1963)
- Limitations
- Archival lead only - deck logs do not themselves document asbestos; no page-level review performed; RG 19 GIB and builder contract files unretrieved (no retrieval authorized). Extent of digitized coverage (which months/years) not enumerated.
