- DANFS entry for Aggressor (AMc-64): 'Aggressor (AMc-64) was laid down at Greenport, Long Island N.Y., on 15 April 1941 by the Greenport Basin & Construction Co. as Alliance (AMc-64); renamed Aggressor on 23 May 1941 launched on 19 July 1941 sponsored by Mrs. Arthur M. Van De Water; and placed in service at the New York Navy Yard on 24 October 1941, Lt. (jg.) P. C. Cherry, USNR, in charge.' The coastal minesweeper completed fitting out at Brooklyn and, at the end of the first week in November, moved south to Norfolk, Va.; for the next 31 months she served with the minesweeping and patrol forces attached to the 5th Naval District. Near the middle of May 1944 she was reassigned to the 1st Naval District and operated from the naval frontier base at Portland, Maine. In June 1945 she returned to Norfolk, remaining until late July, when she moved to Charleston, S.C., remaining until placed out of service on 28 December 1945. Her name was struck from the Navy list on 21 January 1946, and she was sold on 3 March 1947 to Mr. Lloyd Lambert, of Baltimore, Md., for scrapping. DANFS stats line: 'AMc-64: dp. 185; l. 97'1"; b. 22'0"; dr. 9'0"; s. 10.0 k.; cpl. 17; a. 2 .50-cal. mg.; cl. Accentor.'

[2]DANFS 'Aggressor' (AMc-64) entry (rename line) + DANFS AMc-63 entry (laid down as Aggressor, renamed Advance 23 May 1941) via hazegray Wayback captures; NavSource Coastal Minesweepers index, ex-name column [nhhc_danfs]

- Name correction, documented: this hull was laid down as Alliance (AMc-64) and renamed Aggressor on 23 May 1941 before launch - the batch-manifest name 'USS Alliance (AMC-64)' is the pre-service name; no vessel served under it. The rename was one of a same-day class-wide shuffle down the Greenport-built hulls documented in the NavSource AMc index: AMc-61 Acme ex-Adamant; AMc-62 Adamant ex-Advance; AMc-63 Advance ex-Aggressor; AMc-64 Aggressor ex-Alliance; AMc-65 Assertive ex-Avenge; AMc-66 Avenge ex-Bulwark; AMc-67 Bold ex-Chief; AMc-68 Bulwark ex-Combat; AMc-69 Combat ex-Comrade. The reciprocal entry confirms the swap: DANFS for AMc-63 records 'laid down on 12 April 1941 ... as Aggressor; renamed Advance on 23 May 1941.' Sister Advance (AMc-63) was later sold to the same scrapper - Lloyd Lambert of Baltimore - on the same date (3 March 1947).

- Limitations
- Documents the pre-service rename only - carries no asbestos content. The NavSource index is a volunteer compilation used here for the ex-name roster pattern; the AMc-64 rename itself is DANFS-documented. Whether the nine-hull same-day shuffle was a single administrative action is unverified but consistent. 'USS Alliance' name collision caution: the name also attaches to unrelated Navy vessels (e.g., the 1875 screw frigate) - see search_ledger.

- Shipbuilding History (Tim Colton compilation), Coastal Minesweepers table: 'During WWII, a total of 70 wooden-hulled coastal minesweepers, even smaller than the YMSs, were built in 15 boatyards. There was only one basic design - the 97-foot, 10-knot "Accentor" class. In addition, 45 fishing vessels were acquired and converted into minesweepers.' Row for this hull: 'AMc-64 | Aggressor | Greenport Basin | 97 | 205 | 24 Oct 1941 | scrapped 1947' - corroborating the builder, the in-service date, the 97-ft design, and the scrapping outcome. uboat.net Allied Warships independently lists the hull: Accentor class, built by Greenport Basin and Construction Co., ordered 1 April 1941, laid down 15 April 1941, launched 19 July 1941, commissioned 24 October 1941, decommissioned 28 December 1945, stricken 21 January 1946, sold for breaking up 3 March 1947.

- Finding
- Era-level inference only: peer-reviewed scholarship documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this wooden-hulled coastal minesweeper was built. The Navy's own stated position in veteran-claims adjudication is that period General Specifications for Ships required heated surfaces to be covered with an insulating material and that 'it is highly probable that asbestos products were used to achieve that end,' naming piping, flanges, valves, fittings, machinery, boilers, evaporators, and heaters. Aboard a ~185-224-ton, 97-ft diesel minesweeper there are no boilers, evaporators, or steam piping - the plausible applications, if any, would be confined to machinery fittings such as exhaust-system insulation, gaskets, and packing.

- Limitations
- Program/era-level documentation only - neither source names this vessel or the Accentor class, and the NPRC itemization (boilers, evaporators, heaters) describes steam-era plant this hull did not have; for a diesel craft the heated-surface set reduces to the exhaust system and fittings. Does not establish that asbestos was or is aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, individual exposure, or causation. No class- or design-specific material documentation for AMc minesweepers was located.

- Finding
- NARA Special List #44 (List of Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Miscellaneous Units, 1801-1947, by ship number) indexes one logbook run for this hull: 'AMC-64 (Aggressor) 10/24/1941 12/31/1941' - her first ten weeks in service, from the New York Navy Yard in-service date through the Norfolk move. The logs are in Record Group 24 (Bureau of Naval Personnel) holdings at the National Archives at College Park. Neither 'Aggressor' nor 'Alliance' appears on NARA's published list of fully digitized Navy deck logs in the National Archives Catalog, so the run is retrievable only via Archives II textual reference; contents unsurveyed. Post-1941 log segments are not indexed in SL-44 - whether they survive in the separate WWII deck-logs series is unresolved.

- Verifies that NARA indexes one log run for this specific hull and its date coverage - not the logs' content, which is unsurveyed (no box-level retrieval performed). The indexed run ends 31 Dec 1941; whether logs covering 1942-1945 service exist but are unindexed in SL-44 is unknown. Nothing in this row is an asbestos finding.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, court finding, or docketed case naming USS Aggressor, USS Alliance, or AMc-64 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion search (authenticated API v4, via project helper) returned zero opinions for exact-phrase 'USS Aggressor' and zero for 'USS Alliance'; the hull-number search 'AMc-64'/'AMC-64' returned four opinions, all matching the 'A.M.C.' American Maritime Cases reporter citation - name collisions, none naming the vessel. A plain 'Aggressor' + asbestos query returned only keyword collisions on the common word. A general web litigation fallback likewise surfaced no qualifying case - the only minesweeper asbestos litigation located is on other hulls (e.g., Wineland v. Air & Liquid Sys. Corp., 539 F. Supp. 3d 1149 (W.D. Wash. 2021) - naming the 1950s MSO ocean minesweepers USS Dynamic, Loyalty, and Esteem, resolved for defendants on product-identification grounds - a merits-level negative for that plaintiff, not exposure evidence about this hull or its class).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941-built vessel is era-consistent with asbestos-containing machinery fittings even accounting for its lighter diesel insulation load. Opinion-level coverage is complete; the RECAP docket index (type=r) could not be searched this pass (fleet pacing budget spent on the final attempt), so docket-level coverage is a residual gap, not a finding. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
