- DANFS entry (verbatim): 'Allthorn (YN-94) was laid down on 31 October 1943 at Slidell, La., by the Canulette Shipbuilding Co. On 20 January 1944 she was redesignated AN-70. She was launched on 27 May 1944, but, on 12 August 1944, her name was cancelled and her designation was changed to that of an auxiliary ocean tug. She became simply ATA-216.'

- Finding
- Shipscribe's ATA-214-class compilation (S. S. Roberts, drawing on Navy directives and Maritime Commission records) documents the program context: the five ATA-214-class tugs were converted from Ailanthus-class net layers after CNO's 10 July 1944 cancellation was withdrawn 5 August 1944 and AN 64-65 and AN 70-72 were reclassified ATA 214-218 on 12 August 1944. The ATA-216 ship note adds: ex-AN-70 12 Aug 44, ex-YN-94 20 Jan 44; name SUMAC originally proposed but rejected; hull initially allocated as YN to Miami Shipbuilding but contract not awarded.

- Secondary scholarly compilation, not an official document - though it transcribes CNO directives and MC disposal records. The 12 Aug 1944 reclassification date it gives contradicts NavSource's '15 May 1944' for the ATA-216 reclassification; DANFS agrees with 12 Aug 1944. No asbestos information.

M. Darrimon, San Francisco. Merchant career: KARNA GAY (1947), EL SOL (1951), scrapped at Kuwait 1968. The Naval Marine Archive's Canulette/Southern Shipbuilding yard database (Slidell, LA; U.S. official no. 262382) independently records: 'Ex-YN 94, ATA 216 1944, sold 1948 as Kara Gay, later El Sol 1951, to Panama 1959, scrapped 1968.'

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical scholarship documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this steel-hulled 1943-44 auxiliary was built at a Louisiana yard. The documented Busch-Sulzer diesel-electric plant carries no boilers or steam mains, so the boiler-room and steam-line lagging class that dominates steam-ship exposure does not apply; plausible era applications are confined to machinery fittings (exhaust-system lagging, gaskets, packing, brake linings on towing gear, electrical and bulkhead insulation).

- WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (class context)
- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel or class and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. The diesel-electric propulsion profile narrows plausible applications relative to steam-driven hulls.

[8]National Archives, Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961 [other_primary]

- Finding type

- Finding
- NARA describes asbestos use in U.S. Navy materiel from 1941 through 1961 as a frequently requested topic requiring ship-by-ship archival research in Bureau of Ships RG 19 records (general/confidential correspondence 1940-1946 arranged by Navy Filing Manual; hull-designation files; shipyard 'QM' contractor files; S39 insulation-and-lagging and S48 piping drawings in the Cartographic Branch). ATA-216 was built 1943-44 within that era, but the guide identifies no material aboard this hull. For this vessel the applicable filing paths are the ATA-216 hull file, the ATA-214 class file, and the QM/Canulette Shipbuilding yard file.

- A negative result in searched public sources is not proof that the vessel had no asbestos - a 1944 Navy-built hull is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials, and undigitized RG 19 construction/outfitting records remain unreviewed. - Finding
- CourtListener sweep (authenticated API v4, 2026-09-26): exact-name opinion query 'Allthorn' returned zero results; hull-number opinion query 'ATA-216' returned 343 hits, all tokenization noise - the hyphenated string matches 'ATA' and '216' fragments in unrelated docket numbers and text, and manual review of returned case names and snippets found no opinion naming the vessel. Exact-name RECAP docket query 'Allthorn' returned 8 dockets, all name collisions - the string surfaces inside scanned claims-register and creditor documents in unrelated mass bankruptcies (Tribune Co., Lehman Brothers, Residential Capital, TK Holdings/Takata, Halo Resorts) plus an FAA environmental suit, none naming a vessel. Hull-number docket query 'ATA-216' returned 9,086 dockets, all tokenization noise on 'ATA'/'216' fragments; first-page review found no docket naming the vessel. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this vessel was located in either index.
