DANFS entry for Aloe (YN-1/AN-6): laid down 14 October 1940 at Houghton, Wash., by the Lake Washington Shipyard; launched 11 January 1941; placed 'in service' 11 June 1941, Lt. (j.g.) Harry R. Shawk, USNR, in charge; allocated to the 12th Naval District and operated non-commissioned in the San Francisco area summer 1941 - winter 1942 tending antisubmarine nets and booms. Commissioned 30 December 1942, Lt. Donald B. Howard, USNR, in command; departed San Francisco 22 January 1943 for Pearl Harbor, then New Caledonia (Noumea 18 March), the New Hebrides, and the Solomons; spent the remainder of the war in the Pacific laying and tending torpedo nets and buoys and conducting salvage and towing, ranging from New Caledonia to Okinawa including the Solomons, Marianas, Marshalls, and Palaus; reclassified net layer 31 January 1944, hull number becoming AN-6. Documented actions: moored at Sturgis Dock, Tulagi, during the 7 April 1943 Operation 'I' raid (67 'Vals' + 110 'Zero' fighters), contributing to the AA barrage and claiming one 'Val' down, one 'possibly' splashed, one 'damaged'; TG 53.16 east of Guam 18 June 1944 (Operation 'Forager'), 20-mm and .50-cal hits on three enemy planes, two crashed and one departed in flames; 28 May 1945 anchored in Nakagusuku Wan, Okinawa (Net and Buoy Unit 3, TU 32.8.3), took a diving kamikaze under fire; 9 October 1945 typhoon at Okinawa - Snowbell (AN-52) drifted down on her, stern colliding with Aloe's starboard bow and ripping a five-foot hole below main-deck level. Returned to the U.S. spring 1946 via Saipan, Guam, the Marshalls, and Hawaii; began preinactivation overhaul at Swan Island, Portland, Oreg., 3 June 1946; decommissioned 3 August 1946, in reserve 26 September 1946, Columbia River Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet, through the 1950s; stricken 9 October 1962; laid up in the MARAD berthing area at Olympia, Wash.; sold 14 May 1971 to I. D. Logan and scrapped. Three battle stars. Stat line: (YN-1: dp. 805; l. 163'2"; b. 30'6"; dr. 11'8"; s. 12.5 k.; cpl. 48; a. 1 3", 2 .50-cal. mg.; cl. Aloe).

Source-conflict register (resolved/unresolved): (a) Keel - DANFS and NavSource print 14 Oct 1940; Shipscribe class table gives 11 Oct 1940; unresolved - DANFS adopted pending contract records. (b) Reclassification - DANFS and NavSource print 'reclassified ... 31 January 1944'; Shipscribe ship note 'Ex YN-1 20 Jan 44' and class note 'all ... reclassified AN ... effective 20 Jan 44'; adopted 31 Jan 1944 per DANFS for this hull (20 Jan is the class-wide directive effective date; the 11-day lag is likely administrative but is not resolved). (c) Strike vs. title transfer - DANFS/NavSource stricken 9 Oct 1962; Shipscribe table and MARAD card red-line 'Marad Title Sept. 1, 1962' record permanent MARAD title transfer 1 Sep 1962; treated as two distinct events (property-title transfer vs. Naval Register strike) and both reported. (d) Disposal dates - DANFS 'sold 14 May 1971' = sale-contract date (PD-X-905/MA-6328 per the MARAD card); MARAD withdrawal/delivery 10 Jun 1971 = physical delivery; consistent, not a conflict. (f) Complement - DANFS 'cpl. 48', NavSource 4+44, MARAD card Off.4/Enl.44; Shipscribe class 46 (1944) - adopted 48. (g) Armament - DANFS '1 3-inch, 2 .50-cal. mg.'; NavSource 1x3"/50 + 2x.50 cal + 1 y-gun; DANFS narrative mentions four .50-cal and 20-mm batteries at various dates; Shipscribe class armament progression (1-3"/23 original; 1-3"/50 from Apr 1942; +3-20mm from Jan 1943; +4-20mm from Dec 1943) - wartime fit changed; detail-level variance not reconciled hull-specifically. (h) Length - DANFS/NavSource/MARAD 163'2" (Shipscribe class 163.2' oa); NavSource spec block prints '162' 2"' - treated as a NavSource typographical variant against four agreeing sources.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941 naval auxiliary operated through WWII is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials, and the hull was sold for scrapping in 1971 before survey practice was routine. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
CourtListener API v4 searches (opinions type=o and RECAP dockets type=r) returned no qualifying asbestos case naming this hull. Queries and results: "USS Aloe" OR "Aloe AN-6" OR "Aloe YN-1" (o: 0); "USS Aloe" (o: 0); "Aloe" asbestos (o: 43 hits - all name collisions: parties and counsel surnamed Aloe and unrelated asbestos cases, none naming the vessel); "Aloe" ship asbestos (o: 14 hits - all name collisions); "USS Aloe" (r: 0); "Aloe" "AN-6" (o: 2 hits - State of Iowa v. Paulson, Iowa Ct. App. 2023, and State of Tennessee v. Perry, Tenn. Crim. App. 2015, both state criminal matters - name collisions, not the vessel); "Aloe" "YN-1" (o: 0); "Lake Washington Shipyard" asbestos (o: 0 - no yard-level asbestos opinion located either).

    Limitations
Confirms no qualifying ship-specific litigation was located via CourtListener as of 2026-09-24; does not rule out state-court or unindexed federal filings outside CourtListener coverage, and does not evaluate the merits of any case that might separately name this vessel. Litigation-stage discipline: no hit reached even the pleading-allegation stage for this hull, so no stage classification beyond 'no qualifying result' applies. 'Aloe' is a high-collision term (common surname and the plant/product name) - the two "Aloe"+"AN-6" hits were screened by court and case type (state criminal appeals) rather than full-text pull.

    Finding
Archival leads: (a) NARA Special List 44 (named-vessel WWII logbook index) contains an Aloe entry - 'Aloe (YN-1, AN-6), begin 12/31/1942, end 6/30/1945' - documenting that deck logs for this hull covering the commissioned period (from commissioning through the Okinawa campaign) exist in RG-24 textual holdings; they are not among the digitized logs in the National Archives Catalog as of 2026-09-24 and would require Archives II retrieval or reproduction order - these would document operations, availabilities, and repair events including the October 1945 Snowbell collision damage; (b) RG-19 (Bureau of Ships) construction/contract records for Lake Washington Shipyard hull 507 and any Booklet of General Plans or specification sheets for the YN-1/AN-6 class design; (c) RG-181 (shore establishments) - 12th Naval District records and forward-area net-defense files for Noumea, Tulagi, Guam, and Okinawa may hold the hull's 1943-45 assignment and maintenance files; (d) the MARAD disposition file for sale PD-X-905 / contract MA-6328 (1971) may name the dismantling location and any condition/inspection terms for buyer I. 1940-1971 records
    Limitations
The SL-44 index entry confirms WWII deck-log holdings for this hull exist (dates 1942-12-31 to 1945-06-30), but no box-level retrieval was performed; existence of asbestos-specific documents in those logs is unknown until surveyed. The pre-commissioning in-service period (1941-1942) is outside the indexed log span. Nothing in this row is an asbestos finding.
