    Finding
Documented for this vehicle: WHOI contracted with General Mills in spring 1962 for a 6,000-ft submersible on Froehlich's Seapup design (Navy/ONR funded; WHOI operated). Hahn & Clay (Houston) fabricated three HY-100 steel spheres Dec 1962 from Lukens Steel plate - spares later used for Navy DSVs Sea Cliff and Turtle. Litton Systems took over the build and delivered Alvin to Woods Hole 1964-05-26; commissioned/dedicated at the WHOI dock 1964-06-05, named for WHOI oceanographer Allyn Vine. First free dive 1964-08-04; first 6,000-ft certification dive 1965-07-20. 1966: located the lost Palomares H-bomb off Spain operating from a Navy LSD. 1968-10-16 (Dive 308): cradle cables failed on launch, vehicle sank in ~5,000 ft with hatch open (3 occupants escaped); recovered Labor Day 1969 by DSV Aluminaut and R/V Mizar, followed by major overhaul.

    Limitations
Operator-published institutional history - authoritative for construction chain and milestones, but self-published by the operating institution rather than an independent record. No asbestos or material content. Contract price differs between WHOI pages ($472,517 history page vs $498,500 Oceanus) - logged in gaps, not asserted.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Current configuration: 7.0 m length, ~20 metric tons gross, battery-electric propulsion (2 banks lead-acid batteries, 120 V/140 Ah each) driving brushless DC thrusters; personnel complement 1 pilot + 2 observers on 6-10-hour dives - no boilers, steam plant, or combustion machinery. The vehicle is completely disassembled, inspected, and reassembled in roughly 5-year NAVSEA-certification overhaul cycles; WHOI states no part of the original 1964 vehicle remains. Titanium pressure hull installed 1973 (certified 12,000 ft); certified 4,000 m 1976; first dives to the newly discovered Galapagos hydrothermal vents 1977; hydraulic propulsion replaced by brushless DC motors in the 1985-86 overhaul; 12 dives to RMS Titanic with the Jason Jr. prototype 1986; new larger titanium sphere + new syntactic foam in the 2011-13 rebuild. Tenders: catamaran Lulu (1965-1983), R/V Atlantis II (1984-1996), R/V Atlantis AGOR-25 (1997-present).

3-person dive crews (pilot + 2 observers); WHOI overhaul technicians; tender crews (separate hulls)
    Limitations
Documents propulsion architecture and rebuild provenance only - it establishes the absence of steam-plant asbestos pathways by design and the near-total material turnover of the vehicle, not the fiber content of any 1964-era component. Does not establish that no asbestos was ever present (early interior materials are undocumented).

  7. [7]NHHC photographic catalog record 'USN 1115311 ALVIN (DSV-2)' + NDSF statement that Alvin is owned by the U.S. Navy (Office of Naval Research) and maintained/operated by WHOI [nhhc_danfs]

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
CORRECTION: this hull is not 'USS Alvin' and is not Albacore-class. NHHC catalogs the vehicle as 'ALVIN (DSV-2)' with no USS prefix; Alvin is Navy-owned property operated by WHOI, dedicated/in service 1964-06-05 - never placed in commission as a United States Ship. The correct name is Alvin (DSV-2), a unique Alvin-type deep-submergence vehicle. USS Albacore (AGSS-569) is a separate experimental submarine; any Albacore-class assignment for this hull is a metadata error.

    Limitations
Corrects designation metadata only; no asbestos content. The NHHC catalog page returned HTTP 404 at research time (NHHC link rot is a standing issue across this dataset) - the catalog record title is confirmed via search index; WHOI itself uses 'commissioned' loosely for the 1964 dock ceremony. No DANFS entry exists for this non-commissioned vehicle.

    Finding
Alvin is certified under the Navy's Deep Submergence Systems program (NAVSEA SS800-AG-MAN-010/P-9290 and predecessors), administered by the Director, Submarine Programs. The certification regime requires the roughly 5-year overhaul cycle in which the vehicle is fully disassembled, inspected, and reassembled. 2022-07-21: record 6,453-m dive in the Puerto Rico Trench; NAVSEA signed certification to 6,500 m on 2022-07-25. 2026-06-20: certification dive to 6,374 m; formal recertification 2026-06-24. Owned by the U.S. Navy (ONR); operated by WHOI within NDSF (NSF-funded, NSF/ONR/NOAA-sponsored).

Navy shipyard workers; asbestos program review
    Limitations
Program-level documentation of Navy ship insulation practice; the documented applications (thermal insulation on steam/auxiliary systems) do not exist aboard this battery-electric vehicle, so the era record does not reach Alvin's material content. Full text not retrieved (gao.gov blocks automated fetch, HTTP 403) - content via product-page description.

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-alvin-dsv2-01 through -09
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or asbestos litigation naming Alvin or DSV-2 was found in the sources searched. The CourtListener name/hull-number check is INCOMPLETE - the API returned HTTP 429 (125/day quota exhausted by concurrent batch work on this machine; retry-after ~62,080 s) and was not retried into a ban. Web-level searches for asbestos/mesothelioma litigation naming the submersible, WHOI, or Litton's Minneapolis Alvin work surfaced no qualifying hit - only name collisions (USS Alvin C. Cockrell DE-366; personal-name parties). Expected CourtListener collision profile: 'Alvin' is a common personal name and a DE-366 namesake - any future hits must be classified for collisions before attribution.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and conversely this vehicle's documented configuration (battery-electric, no steam plant, repeatedly rebuilt to nil original material) makes era inference weaker than for any fleet hull. The litigation check is honestly partial: docket-level CourtListener verification was rate-limit blocked, not clean. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

The MBLWHOI Data Library and Archives holds the primary construction record for this vehicle: early contracts with General Mills, Hahn & Clay, and Litton; engineering changes and authorizations; system/component test reports; repair records; and construction photographs including hull sections at Litton Industries, Minneapolis, 1964 (AC-44, Box V2Dd3 Folder 19). This is the only repository identified likely to contain material-level detail for the 1962-64 build.
