Per-hull record for AMc-144 / YP-382: 'Built in 1940 at Tacoma, WA. Acquired by the Navy in 1941 and designated as a Coastal Minesweeper, AMc-144. Reclassified as a District Patrol Craft, YP-382 in May 1942 and placed in service. Transferred to the War Shipping Administration in February 1945. Fate unknown.' Specifications: displacement 72 t.; length 88'; speed 11 kts.; propulsion one diesel engine, one shaft. Call sign Nan-Yoke-Victor-Sugar. NavSource states 'There is no DANFS history currently available for YP-382' and holds no image of the craft.

Navy crew of a ~72-84 ton district patrol craft (1941-1945)
    Limitations
Secondary compilation (the standard per-hull reference for small Navy craft), not a primary document - consistent with the shipbuildinghistory table data. Names no building yard, no commercial or fishing-vessel identity, no conversion yard, no complement, and no wartime stations; contains no materials or asbestos information. 'Acquired by the Navy in 1941' is boilerplate phrasing used across these pages (siblings AMc-145/146 read 'acquired 1942') and does not resolve whether she was a requisitioned commercial vessel or a Navy-contract build.

    Finding
Independent per-hull table row: YP-382 - built Tacoma WA, 76 ft, 84 tons, 1940, 'Ex-AMc 144, YP 1942, to MARAD 1945' - with the builder field blank and no ex- commercial name given. Program context from the same compiled tables: the Navy converted 45 acquired fishing vessels into coastal minesweepers (AMc) during WWII in addition to ~70 purpose-built wooden Accentor-class hulls, and the YP fleet grew to about 650 craft, mostly acquired yachts and fishing vessels. AMc hulls 143-148 were redesignated YP-381 through YP-386 as a block.

    Limitations
Shipyard-history compilation, secondary but corroborating NavSource independently; the dimensional figures conflict (76 ft/84 t here vs 88 ft/72 t at NavSource - logged in the correction row). Gives no builder, no wartime station detail, no crew figures, no asbestos information. Program-level counts are context, not hull evidence.

    Finding
Special List #44 indexes this hull's deck logs in the National Archives deck-log collection (RG 24) under her later designation: 'YP-382, 9/1/1942 - 8/31/1944' - one date range covering the first two years of her district-patrol-craft service. There is NO 'AMC-144' entry in the index: logs for the AMc-designation phase (1941 - May 1942) are not indexed, and the final months of service (September 1944 - February 1945, through the WSA transfer) are likewise unindexed. The NARA 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' page lists no YP-382 among digitized logs - the logs exist as physical holdings, undigitized.

SL-44 indexes physical holdings, not digitization status. This is the 'WWII deck logs establish service' reference in the batch task - it establishes the log series' existence under YP-382 for Sep 1942-Aug 1944, nothing more. Finding
The Navy register-derived AMc tables do not carry an AMc-144 row at all - the unnamed AMc-143-148 craft are absent from the table entirely, while named converted vessels and the standardized Accentor/Acme family are listed hull by hull. The table's 'Converted Vessel Class' block characterizes the requisitioned-fishing-vessel AMc type: 'Displacement 165-270 tons; Length 76'7"-136'; ... Diesel engine, 400 h.p. Converted from commercial fishermen (except 203 and 204): mostly draggers and purse seiners, largely tuna clippers from west coast ports.' This hull's documented figures (72-84 t, 76-88 ft) sit BELOW that class envelope, and whether she was a requisitioned fisherman or a small Navy-contract build is unresolved in all compiled sources checked.

    Finding
Design-level assessment of the asbestos-relevant profile: this craft carried a single diesel engine on one shaft in a ~72-84 ton wooden-type hull - no boilers, no steam distribution system, no turbines. The principal asbestos vectors documented aboard steam-era naval vessels - boiler and steam-drum lagging, steam-line insulation, turbine and condenser insulation - are absent by design in this type. Residual era-typical applications remain plausible but are undocumented for this hull: diesel exhaust and muffler insulation, engine gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, joiner materials, and brake linings on winch/windlass gear. Whether her construction followed commercial-fishing practice or a naval contract (which would bear on insulation specification) is unresolved.

    Limitations
Class/design inference, not a ship-specific finding: the absence of a steam plant removes the dominant asbestos vectors but does not prove the absence of asbestos aboard - WWII-era gaskets, packing, electrical components, and interior materials could still contain asbestos, and whatever conversion/outfitting the Navy added is undocumented. Nothing in the cited sources names an asbestos product installed on this hull. Does not establish presence, absence, exposure, or causation for any individual.

    Finding
Group operating context for the AMc-143-148/YP-381-386 block: the official CNO loss report lists sister craft YP-383 (ex-AMc-145, built Tacoma 1940 like this hull) sunk in collision with USS LCI(L)-873 in the Gulf of Panama on 24 November 1944 - placing at least part of this craft group on Panama/15th Naval District service. The wider program is documented: the Navy took about 52 California tuna clippers after Pearl Harbor, painted them grey and numbered them as YPs ('Yippies'), and they patrolled U.S. coasts, the Panama Canal approaches, and South Pacific stations; the first group sailed for Panama on 25 February 1942. Sibling YP-381 (ex-AMc-143) served the 12th Naval District (Mare Island) instead - so the group was dispersed across districts and YP-382's own station is undocumented.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Publication-level discrepancies reconciled or logged: (a) Dimensions - NavSource gives 88 ft / 72 t; shipbuildinghistory gives 76 ft / 84 t; unresolved measure variance, both carried. (b) Acquisition year - NavSource reads 'acquired ... in 1941' for AMc-144 but 'acquired ... in 1942' for sisters AMc-145/146; internal inconsistency noted, 1941 carried as this hull's stated figure. (c) Name status - the craft was never named: 'AMc-144' and 'YP-382' are hull designations; consistent with this, NavSource flags 'no DANFS history currently available,' candidate NHHC URLs 404, and the Internet Archive holds no captures of a DANFS page for either designation. (d) Register coverage - AMc-144 is absent from the Navy register-derived AMc table (unnamed hulls not itemized). (e) Deck-log indexing - SL-44 indexes logs only under 'YP-382' (Sep 1942-Aug 1944); the AMc-144 phase (1941-May 1942) has no indexed logs, and Sep 1944-Feb 1945 (through the WSA transfer) is unindexed - the task's 'WWII deck logs establish service' maps to the YP-382 series only. (f) Provenance - shipbuildinghistory lists AMc-143-148 as a single blank combined row while its Martinac yard table shows sisters AMc-147/148 as US Navy-contract minesweepers built 1940; no table gives AMc-144 a builder or commercial name, so requisitioned-fishing-vessel vs Navy-contract build cannot be resolved.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified docketed case naming AMc-144 or YP-382 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The vessel does not appear in the Naval Vessel Register (NVR excludes vessels disposed of before 1987). As an unnamed hull, the craft does not appear on law-firm/marketing asbestos ship lists at all - those lists key on ship names. VA BVA index hits for 'YP-382'/'AMc-144' are nil; CourtListener site-index hits are docket-number collisions ('AMC' case designations), not vessel references. The CourtListener API check could not be executed - authenticated daily quota (2800/day) exhausted at research time - so the litigation surface is incompletely searched.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - WWII-era construction and conversion practices leave residual uncertainty for gaskets, packing, electrical and engine-adjacent insulation even in a small wooden diesel craft. The litigation check is incomplete because CourtListener was throttled (2800/day shared quota exhausted); re-run is a documented gap.
