- Shipscribe contract table for this hull: APc-34, ordered 19 Feb 42, builder Anderson & Cristofani, keel 13 May 42, launched 18 Jul 42, commissioned 19 Nov 42; disposition row: decommissioned 22 May 46, struck 5 Jun 46, disposal 15 Mar 48, fate MC/D (Maritime Commission disposal), MA sale 8 Mar 48. Class notes document the designation history: on 19 Jan 42 CNO directed construction of 50 coastal minesweepers AMc 150-199; BuShips issued a modified design for the batch in Feb 1942 (slightly longer, 103 ft overall); on 13 Apr 42 CNO requested the 50 vessels be built as 'raider transports, AP,' probably for South Pacific use; the category 'Coastal transport (small), APc' was created 22 Apr 42 with three design roles (2 officers + 74 men for 24 hrs; 2 officers + 50 men + 1,500 cu.ft. cargo for 24 hrs; or 4,000 cu.ft./17 tons cargo for 2,500 miles), a 2-ton foremast boom serving an 8x7 ft forward hatch, and increased fuel/water for the 2,500-mile role; 'AMc 150-199 thus became APc 1-50, though not respectively.' Class spec: 161 t. light / 258 lim; 103.25' oa, 98.2' wl x 21.25' x 9.25' lim; 4-20mm single; complement 21 (1944); 10 kts; diesel, 400 HP, 1 screw; 'some units had a 500 HP diesel.'

- Finding type

- Finding
- Primary federal records for this hull exist and are digitized: (a) muster-roll file unit titled 'APC-34, 11/19/42-5/22/46' - a coverage span matching exactly the commissioning (19 Nov 1942) to decommissioning (22 May 1946) dates, on microfilm Roll 256 with scanned images publicly served from catalog.archives.gov; (b) a run of monthly USS APc-34 war-diary file units in the CNO WWII war-diaries series (RG 38) spanning 1943-1945 - nineteen installments returned in a single capped catalog query (1943: May, Jun, Jul, Dec; 1944: Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, Jul, Oct, Nov; 1945: Jan, Mar, May, Jun, Aug, Sep, Nov, Dec) - a query-limited sample, so the series likely holds additional months. Together these establish the hull's WWII operational service in official records independent of secondary compilations.

- Catalog-level verification only - file-unit metadata (titles, date spans, microfilm roll, image availability) confirmed via the NARA catalog API; individual muster-roll pages and war-diary contents were not read. Muster rolls and war diaries document personnel and operations, not materials; nothing in these records addresses asbestos.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Identity consolidation for the batch record: this hull appears in sources under both 'AMc-151' and 'APc-34.' The AMc designation belongs to the planned minesweeper program - CNO's 19 Jan 42 order for AMc 150-199 - while the April 1942 CNO redirection (13 Apr request for 'raider transports'; APc category created 22 Apr) predates the keel (13 May 42). The hull was therefore completed and commissioned directly as small coastal transport USS APc-34 on 19 Nov 1942 and never served as, or was commissioned as, AMc-151. 'AMc-151' is a planned-designation alias, not a service identity; the craft was never given a ship's name under either designation.

- Reconciles the dual designation found across sources; based on the program chronology in the Shipscribe class notes plus the per-hull 'ex AMc-151' labels in NavSource and the yard table. Does not bear on asbestos documentation either way.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Source-error correction: the yard table's 'Grounded off New Georgia Sep-43 and abandoned' disposition for APc-34 duplicates the fate of sister ship APc-35 - which grounded en route to Renard Sound, New Georgia (08 deg 48'S, 157 deg 46'E) on 22 Sep 1943, was beached and abandoned, and struck 26 Oct 1943 (HyperWar APc-35 entry; CNO WWII losses appendix 'APc 35 Off New Georgia, Solomons 22 September 1943'; NavSource APc-35; Shipscribe disposition row 'Lost' 22 Sep 43). APc-34 demonstrably survived: five more commanding officers after Sep 1943, muster rolls through 5/22/46, war diaries through Dec 1945, decommissioned San Diego 22 May 1946, sold to Mexico 1948. shipbuildinghistory's own APc summary table (auxapc.htm) attributes the grounding only to APc-35 - the yard-table row is a copy error.

- Finding
- Era/design inference on a low-scope platform: this hull is a wooden-hulled, single-diesel small coastal transport with no boilers and no steam plant - the asbestos-relevant machinery footprint is far smaller than a steam vessel's. Era-consistent asbestos applications for a 1942 Navy diesel small craft: diesel exhaust-line lagging; engine gaskets and machinery packing; electrical cable insulation; asbestos-cement sheet or millboard fireproofing around the machinery space; brake/friction linings on winches and the 2-ton cargo boom. Documented disturbance-phase events for this hull: construction at the Anderson & Cristofani wooden-boat yard (May-Nov 1942); wartime operation in the Solomons with undocumented underway/availability maintenance; decommissioning at San Diego (May 1946); Maritime Commission disposal and sale to a Mexican commercial buyer (1948); and an entirely undocumented post-1948 commercial career - an unsurveyed maintenance/repowering phase of unknown duration.

- Limitations
- Inference from the documented platform and construction era - NOT a hull record. No survey, specification, or material schedule naming APc-34 or AMc-151 was located; establishes no asbestos content, quantity, location, condition, individual exposure, or causation. The diesel/wooden platform plausibly carried less asbestos-containing material than steam vessels of the era, but nothing documents it either way.

- Era-level documentation of asbestos use in naval construction generally; does not name this vessel, class, or builder yard (whether Anderson & Cristofani was among or resembled the surveyed contract yards is unverified) and establishes nothing about this hull's materials, condition, or any individual exposure. Pipe-covering scope on a small diesel transport is inherently narrower than on steam vessels.

Indexed-web litigation checks surfaced only generic asbestos dockets (MDL-875 and related) naming no hull and a 1949 Walsh-Healey wage ruling naming the builder yard (unrelated to asbestos). No law-firm or marketing page names this hull - an excluded source class in any event. MARAD ShipHistory carries no record for this hull; NVR carries nothing (struck 1946); NavSource states no DANFS history exists; no NHHC page located.

Rate limit exceeded: 2800/day' (shared daily quota exhausted at research time; expected reset ~7,800 s) - dedicated opinion/docket sweeps were NOT run; negative litigation coverage rests on indexed-web checking only.
