[1]ShipScribe, 'USS APc-1 Class' - APc-1 class construction/disposal tables and ship notes compiled from official U.S. Navy records (BuShips/NVR data cards); corroborated by NavSource USS APc-42 page and shipbuildinghistory APc table [other_primary]

- APc-1 class construction table row 42 (ord. 29 Apr 42, Cryer & Sons, keel 30 Jun 42, launch 7 Dec 42, comm. 10 Mar 43); disposal table row 42 (decomm 5 Jul 46, strike 31 Jul 46, disposal 26 Jun 47 MC/D, MA sale 30 Jun 47); ship note 'APc-42: Ex AMc-177. - Finding
- APc-42's construction order was placed 1942-04-29 at Cryer & Sons, Oakland, CA (ship note: 'Earlier order: Snow SY (19 Feb 42)' - the hull began as AMc-177 under the 19 February 1942 minesweeper order at Snow Shipyard, Rockland, ME); keel 1942-06-30; launched 1942-12-07; commissioned 1943-03-10 per the ShipScribe class table (NavSource gives 1943-01-25 - unresolved). Decommissioned 1946-07-05; struck 1946-07-31 per the disposal table (NavSource gives 1947-07-31 - unresolved); Maritime Commission disposal 1947-06-26, MA sale 1947-06-30 to Donald S. Morgan, Long Beach, CA; merchant vessel DONNA M documented 1948, off list 1954.

- Limitations
- Establishes identity, construction, and disposal milestones only - no asbestos or materials information. ShipScribe, NavSource, and shipbuildinghistory are secondary compilations of official records, not the records themselves; no DANFS entry exists for this hull (NavSource states so explicitly and the NHHC candidate URL 404s). Commissioning date conflicts across sources (1943-01-25 vs 1943-03-10) and strike year conflicts (1946 vs 1947) - carried in gaps.

[2]ShipScribe APc-1 class notes (compiled from CNO/BuShips program records) [other_primary]
- Locator
- ShipScribe APc-1 class 'Class Notes' section and ship note for APc-42; NavSource 'Originally planned as Coastal Minesweeper AMc-177'
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The designation 'AMc-177' was a planned coastal-minesweeper contract identity only, not a commissioned vessel. On 1942-01-19 CNO directed construction of fifty AMc coastal minesweepers (AMc-150 to AMc-199); the hull that became APc-42 was first ordered as AMc-177 at Snow Shipyard 1942-02-19. On 1942-04-13 CNO requested the fifty be built instead as 'raider transports, AP'; the District Craft Development Board recommended the change on 1942-04-20 and the category 'Coastal transport (small), APc' was created 1942-04-22. AMc-150 through AMc-199 became APc-1 through APc-50 'though not respectively' - AMc-177 specifically became APc-42 (ship note: 'Ex AMc-177'), with the construction order re-placed at Cryer & Sons, Oakland, 1942-04-29. No minesweeper AMc-177 ever entered service; the hull was completed and commissioned as the small coastal transport APc-42.

- 1942 (program change and yard reassignment)
- Limitations
- Class-program documentation confirming the designation change and the yard reassignment; establishes vessel TYPE (small coastal transport, not minesweeper) and the consolidation mapping; contains no asbestos or materials information. The mapping is non-ordinal (AMc-177 -> APc-42) and cannot be derived arithmetically - it is confirmed only by per-ship notes in two independent compilations (ShipScribe, NavSource).

[3]HyperWar, 'Ships of the U.S. Navy, 1940-1945 - US Navy Miscellaneous Transports' - official-record compilation of APc class characteristics [other_primary]
- Locator
- APc class specification block and unit table (APc-42 inside the APc-40-85 commissioned-1942-43 range)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Class configuration: the APc-1 class were small wooden-hulled coastal transports (103 ft, ~234 tons full load, diesel engines, single screw, ~9-10 knots) officially described as 'Similar to the Accentor Class AMc's' - the coastal-minesweeper design from which the type was adapted. APc-42 falls within the compilation's APc-40-85 block, commissioned 1942-43. A wooden hull and diesel propulsion mean the class carried no boilers or steam plant - the machinery category most associated with documented WWII-era asbestos insulation aboard larger combatants.

- Shipyard workers and class crews (class context)
- Limitations
- Class-level specification; documents the type's plant, not materials aboard this hull. Absence of a steam plant removes the most commonly documented WWII asbestos pathway but does not establish that no asbestos-containing material was aboard (gaskets, exhaust insulation, electrical insulation, fireproofing compounds remain undocumented either way).

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program context in which this 1942 wooden-hulled coastal transport was built - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization across naval construction.

- NavSource documents APc-42's wartime service: assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with campaign credit for Consolidation of Solomon Islands (northern Solomons, 27 October 1943 - 15 March 1945) and one battle star; awards American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and Philippines Liberation Medal. A contributed photograph shows her moored at Guiuan, Samar, Philippine Islands, April 1946, armament removed, shortly before sailing to San Diego for decommissioning 1946-07-05. Five-officer command chronology from LTjg. Clinton E. Voyles (1943-01-25) to ENS. Charles R. Perrin (June 1946 - decommissioning). Specification block: 100 t lt / 258 t fl, 103' x 21'3" x 9'3" lim, four single 20mm AA mounts, one Atlas 6HM2124 diesel, 400 shp, two diesel-drive 30 kW 120V ship's-service generators, single propeller; troop capacity 66; complement 3 officers, 22 enlisted. Post-Navy: sold 1947-06-26 to Donald S. Morgan, Long Beach, CA, as fishing vessel FV Donna M (removed 1947-06-30); struck 1947-07-31 per NavSource; transferred to MARAD 1947; final disposition - burned 1954-05-13 about 30 miles off Cape Velas, Costa Rica, en route to San Diego.

Strike year (1947) conflicts with ShipScribe (1946). Establishes no asbestos information. Page explicitly states no DANFS history exists for this hull.

No litigation of any kind naming the vessel was located on the surfaces that could be checked.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - it reports that no qualifying record was found. The CourtListener opinion/RECAP name search was throttled at the daily cap at query time (HTTP 429, 2800/day shared authenticated cap exhausted by earlier batch work), so the litigation sweep is incomplete and flagged rather than failed silently; web-level litigation searches found no asbestos case naming the vessel. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Archival leads not retrieved: NARA RG 24 deck logs for APc-42 (College Park; digitization status undetermined - catalog API returned a JavaScript shell, not records) would verify the documented Solomons campaign employment and day-to-day operations; the Maritime Commission/MARAD disposal file would cover the June 1947 transfer and sale to Donald S. Morgan; USCG Merchant Vessels of the United States annuals could document the Donna M documentation chain (ON 255445) 1948-1954; merchant-casualty or Costa Rican records could corroborate the 13 May 1954 fire off Cape Velas; Cryer yard records (Oakland) may survive in regional maritime collections.
