[1]U.S. Navy vessel-register data for the APc-1 class (Shipscribe transcription), class notes and ship notes [other_primary]
- Locator
- APC-1 class data sheet: Construction table row 45; Ship Notes row 45 ('Ex AMc-187'); Class Notes procurement narrative
- Finding type

- Finding
- Identity correction/consolidation: AMc-187 was a planned designation only. On 1942-01-19 the CNO directed construction of 50 coastal minesweepers AMc 150-199; on 1942-04-13 the CNO requested the same 50 hulls be built as 'raider transports, AP'; the 'Coastal transport (small), APc' category was created 1942-04-22 and AMc 150-199 became APc 1-50 'though not respectively.' The Lynch Shipbuilding hull ordered 1942-04-29 was completed and commissioned as small coastal transport APc-45 - register ship note: 'APc-45. Ex AMc-187.' No vessel was ever commissioned as AMc-187.

- Limitations
- Shipscribe transcribes official Navy register/class data; the transcription itself is secondary. The AMc-187 designation never reached the water - the hull was built as APc-45 from the 1942-04-29 contract. Register data conflicts with NavSource on keel date (26 vs 28 May 1942) and commissioning date (5 Jan vs 27 Apr 1943).

- Limitations
- Register transcription (secondary carrier of official data). Keel date conflicts with NavSource (26 vs 28 May 1942); commissioning column gives 1943-01-05 vs NavSource's 1943-04-27 - see separate conflict row. 'MARAD 1947' framing on secondary pages is anachronistic: the U.S. Maritime Commission (not MARAD, created 1950) handled the 1948 disposal. No asbestos content in this record.

[3]NavSource USS APc-45 entry vs Navy-register transcription (Shipscribe) and NARA Special List 44 deck-log coverage [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource APc-45 page (commissioning line, CO roster); Shipscribe APC-1 construction table; archives.gov SL-44 ship-number list, APC-45 line
- Finding type

- Finding
- Commissioning-date conflict, unresolved: NavSource records commissioning on 1943-04-27 (LT Robinson D. Williams, USNR, in command) - the same date the Lynch yard list gives for delivery (1943-04-27). The Navy-register transcription gives 1943-01-05 in the commissioning column, and the NARA deck-log finding aid (Special List 44) lists APC-45 log coverage beginning 1943-01-05. Two independent official-derived sources indicate 5 January 1943; the widely repeated 27 April 1943 coincides exactly with the builder's delivery date.

- Limitations
- Both dates fall in 1943, within the 1930-1986 service window either way; the conflict is logged, not resolved - the original register page or the deck log's first entry would settle it. NavSource is a compiled secondary record; the register transcription and NARA list derive from official sources but the register 'Commiss.' column convention for small craft (commissioning vs in-service date) is not confirmed.

The log coverage start date independently corroborates the 5 January 1943 commissioning/in-service date.

The report is filed in the A16-3 'Examination of Enemy Vessels' correspondence series; adjacent indexed items concern examination of the beached Japanese destroyer Nagatsuki near Surumi Cove, Kula Gulf (Solomon Islands) - placing the report in a South Pacific operations context, but the report's own subject is unverified.

- Limitations
- Identification rests on the official-number match (ON 258868), not a hull survey; the wreck entry describes an '86 foot' longliner vs the documented 103 ft length - fishing-conversion remeasure or compiler error possible. Compiled from the federal BOEM 2011 list plus an unofficial Kodiak list via a secondary compiler; NavSource's 'out of documentation 1990' is consistent. USCG casualty/NVDC records would confirm; not retrieved this session.

- Limitations
- Era/program-level background only: the study addresses wartime shipbuilding generally (large steel-hull construction at major yards) and does not name this vessel, its class, or small wooden diesel craft. A 103-ft wooden-hulled diesel transport had no boilers or steam plant - the highest-density asbestos applications of the era - so era inference for this hull type is weak. Does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - small wooden diesel craft of this era could still carry asbestos in engine exhaust lagging, gaskets, packing, and electrical insulation. Conversely, era inference is weak for this type. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
