- DANFS record for this hull: laid down 30 November 1942 by the Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., Newark, N.J.; launched 27 May 1943, sponsored by Mrs. Mary R. Amick, widow of Ens. Eugene E. Amick (killed aboard Astoria CA-34 at Savo Island 9 August 1942); commissioned at the New York Navy Yard 26 July 1943, Lt. Comdr. Francis C. B. McCune in command. Bermuda shakedown including tests of defensive devices against acoustic torpedoes; TF 62 transatlantic convoy escort and flagship for CortDiv 15 - nine round-trip crossings November 1943-May 1945 to Casablanca, Gibraltar, Bizerte, Palermo, and Oran; one German air attack on the convoy off Cape Bengut, Algeria, 1 August 1944, no damage; availabilities at the New York or Boston Navy Yards after each westward crossing. Pacific transfer May-June 1945 (Panama Canal 10 June; Pearl Harbor 29 June); Saipan TU 94.7.2; one Okinawa round-trip; en route to Ulithi at Japan's capitulation 15 August; at Peleliu joined TU 94.6.1 and on 1 September 1945 received in her wardroom the unconditional surrender of all Japanese forces in the northern Palaus. Returned to the U.S. November 1945; Atlantic Fleet; repairs at Jacksonville January 1946; CortDiv 12 receiving-ship duty at Green Cove Springs; decommissioned there 16 May 1947. Loaned to Japan 14 June 1955 under MDAP as Asahi (DE-262); returned early 1975; reclassified frigate FF-168 6 January 1975; stricken from the Navy list 15 June 1975; sold to the Republic of the Philippines September 1976.

- Federal Shipbuilding construction trades 1942-43; wartime and postwar crew (design complement 216); JMSDF crew 1955-1975
- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Its laid-down date (30 November 1942) conflicts with secondary compilations (7 January 1943) - carried in gaps. Post-sale Philippine disposition details (name, pennant, scrapping date) are not in DANFS. Verbatim mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

- Finding
- Secondary-compilation disposition detail beyond DANFS: sold to the Philippines 13 September 1976 and renamed (rendered 'Datu Siratuna' by NavSource/uboat.net, 'Datu Sikatuna' by seaforces; pennant PF-5); stricken and scrapped 1989. NavSource's own index independently gives keel-laying as 30 November 1942 at Federal Shipbuilding, Port Newark - agreeing with DANFS on that date.

- Population
- Philippine Navy crew 1976-1989; scrapping workers 1989
- Limitations
- Volunteer/secondary compilations are leads, not authoritative sources: exact Philippine transfer day (13 September 1976), the ship's Philippine name spelling ('Siratuna' vs 'Sikatuna'), pennant PF-5, and 1989 scrapping appear only in secondary sources; no Philippine Navy or U.S. official record located. Post-USN material history under JMSDF and Philippine custody is undocumented.

[4]DANFS specifications block (Cannon class, DET diesel-electric; 20.9 kt) + Atlas shipyard dataset, Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. record 'federal-shipbuilding-kearny' (tier-2 yard; 1944 Owens-Illinois Industrial Health Survey) [other_primary]

- Finding
- Era/yard inference: a Cannon-class (DET-design) destroyer escort built 1942-43 carried a diesel-electric plant - four GM 16-278A diesel-generator sets, electric drive, no propulsion boilers or steam plant - so the largest asbestos categories of steam ships (boiler and steam-line lagging) do not apply; the period-standard set for a diesel-electric DE is exhaust-system insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, brake linings, and deck coverings. Builder Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. is documented in the Atlas yard dataset (tier 2) via an Owens-Illinois Industrial Health Survey of the company's Kearny, N.J. yard (30 August-2 September 1944) documenting asbestos pipe covering (Johns-Manville Superex), boiler insulation work, and dust counts in confined shipyard spaces.

- Population
- Federal Shipbuilding construction trades 1942-43; crew 1943-47; JMSDF and Philippine crews 1955-1989
- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-company inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The 1944 survey covered Federal's Kearny yard; DANFS locates Amick's construction at Newark (the company's separate Port Newark yard per secondary compilations) - same company, different site, and this hull (laid November 1942, launched May 1943) predates the survey window. Documents the company's product environment; does not establish materials aboard this hull, quantities, or any individual's exposure.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-168: no hull ACM survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming USS Amick or DE-168 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener 'USS Amick' returned zero opinion and zero RECAP-docket results; 'DE-168' queries returned 38 opinion and 811 docket hits, all identifier collisions - page/docket-number strings in unrelated litigation, none vessel-related and none asbestos litigation.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard during construction or service - era materials were standard; the hull was scrapped abroad in 1989, so any present-day ACM question is moot and the exposure question is retrospective. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
