- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS identifies this hull as a Fletcher-class destroyer built by Bethlehem Steel Corp. at San Francisco: laid down 1941-11-29, launched 1942-09-17, commissioned 1943-03-20, placed out of commission 1946-04-15, recommissioned 1951-04-05, decommissioned 1960-09-15, stricken 1960-10-01, and sold to National Metal & Steel Corp. for scrapping 1961-04-20. It gives a design complement of 329. Service included Aleutian and New Guinea operations, Okinawa radar-picket duty, postwar reserve, Mediterranean and Western Pacific deployments, and a 1952 modernization overhaul. DANFS records that on 1960-07-19 the ship collided with Collett (DD-730), killing 11 Ammen crew members and injuring 20.

- Population
- Ship's company and shipyard personnel described in the historical narrative; complement is design figure
- Limitations
- DANFS documents identity, history, specifications, casualties, and disposition; it does not document asbestos aboard, asbestos-related work, individual exposure, or remaining material. The complement is the published design figure, not a verified crew count for every period.

[3]U.S. General Accounting Office, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (Oct. 18, 1979), including enclosure II, pp. 12-13 (PDF pp. 21-22) [gao]

- GAO report pp. 10-13 (PDF pp. 19-22): Navy letter on shipboard applications and estimate table; GAO discussion of 1975 policy and subsequent selective replacement
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The report describes Navy shipboard asbestos use, with thermal insulation for machinery, equipment, and piping as a major application; its Navy response also identifies shipboard uses including gaskets, packing, deck tile, and equipment applications. A Navy estimate reproduced in the report lists 87,634 pounds of thermal insulation for the broad destroyer (DD) category. This is Navy/destroyer-category context only and is not a measurement, inventory, or estimate for USS Ammen (DD-527).

- Population
- U.S. Navy shipbuilding, ship repair, and shipboard insulation program; broad destroyer category
- Limitations
- The report does not name Ammen or distinguish this hull's construction, modernization, removals, or remaining materials. The DD-category estimate must not be attributed to this ship. It establishes no individual exposure, dose, health outcome, or legal eligibility.

[4]CourtListener authenticated API v4 docket-search result: Fuoco v. 3M Corporation, No. 1:13-cv-07054 (D.N.J.), filed 2013-11-20, terminated 2015-11-03; asbestos cause and a RECAP opinion dated 2015-09-29 indexed [court_record]

- Authenticated CourtListener search result for exact query ‘USS Ammen’ (docket type); Fuoco docket 1:13-cv-07054, indexed docket metadata and RECAP document 96
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- The exact-name docket search for ‘USS Ammen’ returned one asbestos docket, Fuoco v. 3M Corporation (D.N.J. No. 1:13-cv-07054), with an indexed 2015 opinion. The docket hit is a potential Ammen litigation lead only: the opinion and underlying pleadings were not reviewed to verify whether DD-527 is named as an alleged exposure vessel. The ship-specific litigation classification therefore remains unresolved.

- Study period
- 2013-2015 litigation; potential alleged exposure period not verified
- Population
- Potential docket lead; plaintiff/hull relationship not verified
- Limitations
- Search-index hit is not an exposure allegation or a court finding. No statement is made that Fuoco alleged exposure aboard Ammen. The fleet-wide pacing limiter blocked a subsequent DD-527 docket query; CourtListener work stopped at that point. The result must not be classified as qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull without full-text confirmation.

- Search ledger sl-uss-ammen-dd527-02 through sl-uss-ammen-dd527-05
- Finding type
- abatement_record
- Finding
- No direct ship-specific asbestos inventory, asbestos survey, sample analysis, or abatement record for USS Ammen (DD-527) was located in the sources reviewed. This is a documented research result, not evidence that asbestos was absent from the vessel.

- Limitations
- Search coverage was limited to the named sources and queries in the ledger. No NARA RG 19 material specification or shipboard weight-control report was retrieved, and a negative public-source search cannot establish absence of asbestos. Fletcher-class or Navy-wide evidence was not promoted to a hull-specific finding.
