    vessel_history
    Finding
DANFS identifies Anchorage (LSD-36) as an Anchorage-class dock landing ship, laid down 13 March 1967 at Pascagoula, Mississippi, by Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp.; launched 5 May 1968; and commissioned at Norfolk Naval Shipyard on 15 March 1969. Its specifications block gives a 397-person complement and 20-knot speed. The account records post-shakedown availability at Mare Island Naval Shipyard beginning 1 November 1969 and a 1982 San Diego overhaul that included general repairs, propulsion-plant work, communications modernization, and defensive-capability upgrades.

Construction trades (1967-1969); ship's company (design complement 397); yard workers during recorded availabilities
    Limitations
This is an archived copy because the live NHHC page returned 404 when checked. DANFS documents hull history and selected yard periods, not asbestos content, product identity, quantities, worker exposure, or conditions during the listed work.

    Finding
Official Navy retrospective distinguishes the first USS Anchorage, LSD-36, from the 2013-commissioned USS Anchorage (LPD-23): it states that LSD-36 was commissioned in 1969, served in Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, and was decommissioned in 2003.

    LSD-36 crew, 1969-2003
    Limitations
The retrospective supplies only the year of decommissioning and a high-level service summary. It does not establish an exact decommissioning date, final disposition, asbestos content, or exposure.

  4. [4]National Archives, 'Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961' [other_primary]
    Locator
NARA guide: 'Beginning Research'; 'General Information Books'; 'Continuing Research' (deck logs and muster rolls)
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA's asbestos-research guide identifies ship history, Bureau of Ships records, General/Ship Information Books, specifications, and inspection records as research avenues; it identifies RG 19 Entry P 10 as amphibious-vessel General Information Books and states that deck logs and muster rolls do not themselves provide direct evidence of asbestos. Anchorage's 1967 construction is outside the guide's stated 1941-1961 focus, so this is a methodology and archival lead only.

    NARA guide scope: 1941-1961
    Population
    Not applicable; archival-research methodology
    Limitations
NARA's guide neither names LSD-36 nor documents asbestos aboard it, and its stated 1941-1961 scope does not cover Anchorage's construction. No responsive LSD-36 record was retrieved in this batch; this row cannot support an asbestos finding.
