Class notes: MC hulls 199-204 at Federal were initially selected to become AKA 15-20; hulls 200-202 were reallocated to AGC 1-3 and hulls 205-207 substituted for AKA 16-18; the class's design innovation was the quadrupod mast - BuShips had New York Navy Yard lighten the kingpost design, and New York built the first twelve fabricated masts 'for installation by Federal on AKA 15-20'; all but AKA 54, 56-57, 109-111 were completed under the MC Military Program.

- Federal Shipbuilding Kearny construction workforce (1942-43); New York Navy Yard fabrication/commissioning workforce (1943); wartime crew and embarked troops; MSTS-era crew (1949-50)
- Limitations
- Compiled secondary transcription of official Navy register, design, and MARAD records, not the registers themselves; figures used where consistent with NHHC/SDB/MARAD. Its class-level complement (249, 1944) conflicts with DANFS spec block and NavSource (404 / 44+360) - discrepancy logged in gaps. Under ShipScribe taxonomy the C2-S-B1 hulls are 'Andromeda (AKA-15) class' while the Walsh-Kaiser S4-SE2-BE1 hulls (AKA 21-43) are a separate 'Artemis (AKA-21) class'; Wikipedia's 'Andromeda-class' umbrella covers both designs - taxonomy noted here for cross-reference. Contains no asbestos information; the mast-fabrication note documents a New York Navy Yard role in class outfitting, not materials content.

- Finding
- Secondary-source discrepancies identified and resolved against primary sources: (a) Commissioning date - NavSource gives 'Commissioned ... 30 March 1943 at New York Navy Yard'; DANFS, ShipScribe, and BuShips SDB 1945 construction row all give 2 Apr 1943 (30 Mar is the Navy delivery/loan-charter acquisition date); the DANFS/SDB 2 Apr 1943 date is adopted. (b) Southern France campaign - NavSource campaign table dates the 'Invasion of Southern France' 15-25 September 1944; DANFS places Andromeda off the invasion beaches 15 Aug 1944 (Operation Dragoon was 15 Aug), making NavSource's September a probable month error; DANFS carried. (c) NavSource CO-table typos - 'CDR. Fly ... 2 April 1942' (before keel-laying; the 1943 commissioning year is documented) and 'CDR. Anderson ... September 1957 - 2 October 1954' (start after end, and after decommissioning) - not carried. (d) GlobalSecurity's hull page calls Andromeda 'the first attack cargo ship built from the keel up rather than converted' - she was completed to the MC C2-S-B1 attack-cargo design under the MC Military Program rather than converted post-completion, but the class's AKA conversion work was designed into the build at Federal/New York Navy Yard; the 'first purpose-built' framing is secondary characterization, not carried as fact.

- Finding
- Era/design inference: this hull carried a single-screw geared-turbine steam plant - two Combustion Engineering D-type boilers at 465 psi / 765 deg F feeding one G.E. turbine (BuShips SDB 1945 machinery row) - built 1942-43 at the peak of WWII asbestos usage at a Maritime Commission contract yard (Federal Kearny) and outfitted under the MC Military Program with New York Navy Yard-fabricated fittings - the machinery configuration for which boiler and fireroom insulation, main and auxiliary steam-line lagging, turbine and reduction-gear lagging, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, and accommodation joiner insulation of the period were commonly asbestos-containing. Troop/landing-craft outfitting added interior insulation scope. Documented disturbance-phase events for this hull: a January 1944 Norfolk yard overhaul (yard unnamed in DANFS), a November 1944 month of repairs at Boston (yard unnamed), ~4 years in USN reserve/NDRF Olympia lay-up (1956-60), the 1971-74 post-sale period at Seattle (including movie-prop fitting), and breaking at a Taiwan yard - disturbance events whose asbestos scope is inference, not record.

The survey documents industrial-hygiene conditions at the same builder yard during the same wartime construction program as this hull - but was conducted about 17 months after Andromeda was delivered (30 Mar 1943), so it postdates her build period rather than overlapping it.

RECAP filings); a deponent named Elizabeth Andromeda (S.D. Ohio deposition notice); and the Andromeda Nightclub (4th Cir. liquor-license case). None name the hull. Law-firm marketing pages asserting era-typical asbestos content for this hull (mesotheliomasymptoms.com dedicated hull page; simmonsfirm.com navy ship list; belluckfox.com Federal-Kearny yard page listing 'USS Andromeda AK-64, AKA-15') are excluded as a source class per the no-law-firm-sources rule and logged in the batch report. The VA BVA index surfaced no decision naming the ship.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942-43 steam auxiliary built at a documented asbestos-era contract yard is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials, and her 1944 overhauls, 1956-60 reserve lay-up, and 1971-74 disposal chain are undocumented disturbance phases. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility. Litigation negative coverage is weaker than a clean API sweep: the CourtListener API was quota-blocked for the whole session and only indexed-web checking was run - dockets indexed only in RECAP and unindexed opinions could have been missed.

- Finding
- Archival leads (not retrieved - requires research-room or reproduction order; no spend authorized): (a) Navy deck logs for USS Andromeda 1943-1956 (RG 24, NARA College Park); (b) BuShips records incl. C2-S-B1 contract plans and the Booklet of General Plans for this design (RG 19); (c) USMC construction-contract records for MC hull 199 at Federal Kearny (RG 178); (d) MARAD/NDRF custody files covering the 1960-1971 Olympia lay-up and the 1971 Marine Power & Equipment sale file under contract MA-6229 (RG 357) - the sale file is the most promising disposal-era hazmat lead; (e) ship-hosted document scans linked from NavSource 02015 that were located but are image-only and were not extracted: 'Action Report - Landing of Occupation Forces, Nagasaki Japan, September 1945' (navsource.net 10/03/pdf/03138a.pdf - a period action report for this hull) and 'USS James O'Hara General Instructions - Exercise 4AP, 17 May 1943, Includes USS Andromeda (AKA-15)' (03090a.pdf); (f) the MARAD status-card scans on Detail 261 (ANDROMEDA.pdf and card image, image-only) may carry additional custody entries.

- Limitations
- Record-group and link mapping only - no box-level retrieval performed and the located PDFs are image-scans not text-extracted this session; existence of asbestos-specific documents for this hull is unknown until surveyed. Nothing in this row is an asbestos finding.
