- DANFS entry, service narrative and final paragraphs
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Service narrative per DANFS: as Coral Sea she flew Gilbert Islands strikes on Makin 20-28 November 1943 (the operation in which sister ship Liscome Bay was lost), supported Kwajalein (TG 52.9), Emirau, Hollandia/Aitape (TG 78.2), and Saipan/Marianas operations before a San Diego overhaul; renamed Anzio 15 September 1944. As Anzio she ran hunter-killer ASW patrols Eniwetok-Ulithi (Oct 1944-Feb 1945), assisted the torpedoed Reno (CL-96) 4 November, flew 106 accident-free night sorties at Iwo Jima (19 Feb-4 Mar 1945), supported Okinawa from 1 April, then ASW patrols with TG 30.8 east of Tokyo through the surrender; provided air cover for occupation landings at Jinsen, Korea; made two 'Magic Carpet' troop-return voyages. Decommissioned at Norfolk 5 August 1946 into the Atlantic Reserve Fleet; stricken 1 March 1959; sold to Master Metals Co. 24 November 1959. Six battle stars.

- Finding
- NHHC Dictionary of American Naval Aviation Squadrons Vol. I, Appendix 2 'Carrier Listing for CVE Designations' (official NHHC publication) lists: 57 Anzio (ex-Coral Sea) - commissioned 27 Aug 1943; stricken 1 Mar 1959; designation CVHE 57 effective 12 Jun 1955. Corroborates the DANFS milestone dates except the June-1955 redesignation date (DANFS prints 15 June 1955 - conflict flagged in gaps).

[4]Batch-41 search ledger (this record): CourtListener exact-name + asbestos-term sweeps; class-profile sweep 2026-09-16 [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-anzio-cve57-03 and sl-uss-anzio-cve57-04
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CourtListener sweeps for this hull could not be completed this session: '"USS Anzio"' and '"CVE-57" asbestos' type=o queries were both throttled by the service's rate limiter (HTTP 202) and returned no data (2026-09-18). The 2026-09-16 class-profile member-name sweep covering all 50 Casablanca-class hulls located no asbestos opinion naming CVE-57 or Coral Sea.

- Limitations
- A null litigation result is not proof that no exposure claims exist - unindexed state-court and settled matters are invisible to opinion databases. The hull-number query could not be completed this session due to rate-limiting; reported as a partial search outcome.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos record of any kind located for this hull: no insulation survey, no material schedule, no abatement contract, no dismantlement hazmat disclosure for the 1959-60 scrapping, and no qualifying published opinion naming CVE-57 (or the Coral Sea name) in an asbestos claim was found in the sources searched.

[6]U.S. Navy, Bureau of Ships Technical Manual, NAVSHIPS 250-000, Chapter 39 'Thermal Insulation' (1960) - specification-level document; class construction and overhaul context per DANFS [other_primary]
- Locator
- BuShips TM ch.39, sections 39-11 through 39-13 (materials)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Class/era context: all 50 Casablanca-class escort carriers were mass-produced by Kaiser at Vancouver, WA, on Maritime Commission S4-S2-BB3 hulls with keels November 1942 - March 1944 - squarely inside the Navy's asbestos-specification era. The 1960 BuShips Technical Manual ch.39 'Thermal Insulation' enumerates the era insulation suite for steam plants of this type: MIL-P-2781 pipe covering incl. 85% magnesia ('about 15 percent asbestos fiber') and an amosite-asbestos class; roll asbestos felt MIL-I-15091; asbestos cloth/tape SS-C-466 (lagging); asbestos millboard HH-M-351; asbestos finishing cement; molded asbestos block for high-temperature service. This hull's 4 B&W boilers and Skinner Uniflow steam plant are the equipment classes those specifications cover; her 1944 San Diego overhaul is a documented disturbance event.

- Population
- Construction trades (Kaiser Vancouver, 1942-43); wartime crew; San Diego overhaul workers (1944)
- Limitations
- Specification-level documentation of what the Navy specified, not a ship-specific installation record - does not confirm installed materials on this hull; the overhaul's insulation scope is era inference. Retrieved PDF is a litigation-repository scan of the government manual.
