- Finding
- Construction and disposition record for this hull: ordered 20 Jul 1944 from Puget Sound Bridge & Dredging Co., Seattle, WA (yard hull no. 87); laid down 8 Nov 1944; launched 26 Jan 1945; placed in service 26 Jul 1945. Non-self-propelled - no propulsion machinery; ship's service power from three diesel-drive 100 kW 450V AC generators; berthing for 583 troops on a 71-man crewed class. Out of service in reserve by Jan 1947; loaned to the Maritime Administration 4 Aug 1958; struck from the Naval Register 1 Sep 1960; transferred to the Virgin Islands 1970.

- Crew plus up to ~583 berthed personnel (class data); Puget Sound Bridge & Dredging construction workforce, 1944-45
- Limitations
- NVR-derived scholarly compilation, not the raw NVR entry itself; contains no asbestos or materials information. Exact reserve-entry and reactivation dates are not given; the 'Virgin Islands' transferee (government vs. private party) is not specified.

[2]NMCB-8 Newsletter, Vol. 5, Issue 1 (February 2005), 'The Heritage of a Battalion Named EIGHT' - official Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 8 publication (mirrored copy on third-party host) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Newsletter page 4, battalion heritage column
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The battalion newsletter names this hull: on MCB-8's Korean-era recommissioning (September 1950), 'EIGHT then became the first Naval Construction Battalion to man a vessel as a part of the Atlantic Fleet. Upon commissioning of the APL-48, the Seabees of EIGHT boarded and took her to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The APL-48 became their home during the five month deployment, while construction work was accomplished on the big Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.' An entire construction battalion lived aboard this hull for the deployment.

- ca. 1950-1955 (deployment ~5 months)
- Population
- MCB-8 battalion personnel berthed aboard (battalion-strength occupancy, ca. 1950-51 era); Guantanamo Bay construction workforce
- Limitations
- Newsletter narrative gives no exact deployment dates; its 'upon commissioning' phrasing conflicts with the hull's first in-service date of 26 Jul 1945 and most plausibly refers to the vessel's reactivation for Atlantic Fleet duty within MCB-8's Sep 1950-1955 active period. Publication is hosted on a third-party document mirror; the underlying item is the battalion's official newsletter.

- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/construction-practice documentation: the Navy-commissioned survey states that 'an important ingredient of pipe covering material used on U.S. Navy vessels is amosite' - an asbestos-type mineral - and documents pipe-covering, asbestos-cloth, and insulation work at Government Navy Yards and Navy contract yards during the construction era in which APL-48 was built (1944-45) at a Navy contract yard (Puget Sound Bridge & Dredging, Seattle).

- Study period
- 1944-1946 (survey era)
- Population
- Navy contract-yard insulation and pipe-covering trades (era); berthed personnel (potential era-typical occupancy exposure, unproven for this hull)
- Limitations
- Class/era documentation only - the survey covered four yards designated A-D (not Puget Sound Bridge & Dredging) and does not name this hull or the APL-2 class. Non-self-propelled barracks barges had no boilers or steam plant, so the steam-system asbestos applications documented for combatant types do not transfer; any asbestos aboard this hull would have been in pipe/exhaust insulation, accommodation joiner and insulation materials, or deck coverings - none documented for this vessel. Does not establish asbestos presence aboard, quantity, or individual exposure.

[4]CourtListener API v4 sweep, 2026-09-26: opinion search "APL-48" (0 results); opinion search "APL 48" (0 results); docket search "APL-48"/"APL 48" (6 results, all name collisions); opinion search "barracks barge" asbestos (0 results) [court_record]
- Locator
- CourtListener search API, type=o and type=r queries per search_ledger
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation located against this vessel. All six docket hits are name collisions in non-asbestos matters - patent (Cedar Lane v. Vizio, C.D. Cal.; Smartflash v. Apple, E.D. Tex.), securities (SEC v. Mahabub, D. Colo.), copyright (Apple v. Corellium, S.D. Fla.), and antitrust (American President Lines v. Matson, D.D.C. - 'APL' is the carrier American President Lines; Citizens for Consumer Justice v. Abbott, D. Mass.) - in which an 'APL-48'-like token appears in exhibit text. No opinion naming this hull exists in the index.

- Limitations
- CourtListener indexing is not exhaustive - PACER-only dockets, state-court matters, and unfiled or settled claims are not covered. The hull's unnamed numeric designation produces clean collision-free matching, but any plaintiff claims could have named the activity (Guantanamo Bay) or unit (MCB-8) rather than the hull.

- search_ledger rows sl-uss-apl-48-apl48-01 through sl-uss-apl-48-apl48-08
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no hull asbestos survey, no abatement contract, no museum/donation hazmat disclosure, and no docketed asbestos case naming APL-48 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). NavSource indexes the hull but carries no dedicated page or history; no DANFS entry exists (numbered barracks craft are not covered); the MARAD Vessel History Database holds cards for sister hulls APL-24 and APL-57 but none for APL-48.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944-45-built accommodation barge remains a plausible era-material carrier. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
