[1]NHHC, DANFS, Aquila I (AK-47) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- Characteristics line and three narrative paragraphs
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS identifies Aquila (AK-47) as the former Tunis, built in 1936 by Helsinger Shipbuilding Co. at Copenhagen, Denmark. The Navy acquired her from the Maritime Commission on 11 August 1941, renamed her on 3 September, and commissioned her on 24 October after conversion by Sullivan Drydock & Repair Co. Complement: 156. She made five round trips from New York/Boston to Reykjavik between 1 December 1941 and 10 October 1942. Arriving at Norfolk on 7 November 1942, she joined Naval Transportation Service operations supplying ports in the Eastern, Panama, Gulf and Caribbean Sea Frontiers. Decommissioned at Norfolk on 9 October 1945; stricken on 24 October 1945 and returned to the Maritime Commission for disposal.

- Limitations
- Official NHHC text retrieved through the search index; direct page opens failed and curl returned no usable text. Builder/location retained exactly as DANFS reports, pending original builder records. Page heading 1941-1947 conflicts with explicit narrative end of Navy service in 1945; narrative dates control and NARA log listing agrees. No asbestos, propulsion, conversion-material specification or final disposal finding is established.

[3]NTIS PB84104108; D. R. Jones, IIT Research Institute, Assessment of Asbestos Concentrations in the Engine Room Environment of Marine Vessels, Phase 1 (1979) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Catalog abstract and bibliographic fields; contract MA-5-38072
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The NTIS abstract for a 1979 marine-vessel engine-room assessment describes extensive use of asbestos in ship construction, particularly since the World War II shipbuilding expansion. This supplies general era background for researching a vessel converted to Navy service in 1941.

- Limitations
- Only the official indexed catalog abstract was retrieved, not the 36-page report. The abstract does not identify Aquila, her Danish construction, her conversion materials, equipment, products, concentrations or any individual exposure. Tier 2 describes general era evidence only; no hull-specific inference is made.

[5]NARA, Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961 [other_primary]
- Locator
- Bureau of Ships correspondence; General Information Books; Board of Inspection and Survey Reports; Cartographic Branch
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA guidance identifies RG 19 Bureau of Ships correspondence, Auxiliary Vessel General Information Books (Entry P 5), and ship engineering drawings as asbestos-research routes. Hull-specific AK47 correspondence and S39 insulation/lagging drawings are follow-up targets; RG 38 auxiliary/yardcraft inspection reports (Entry P 1-I) are another route.

[6]Codex Batch 931 research/search ledger [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger sl-uss-aquila-ak47-01 through -12; uss-aquila-ak47.research.md
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, product identification or exposure documentation was located in the bounded public-source review recorded in the search ledger. Ship-specific asbestos status remains unknown. Litigation sweep deferred: CourtListener daily quota exhausted; fleet backfill pending.

- Limitations
- This verifies the outcome of the listed searches, not the absence of asbestos or litigation. CourtListener was not queried; MARAD card and underlying NARA hull files were not retrieved. Index-only source access and search-engine coverage limit the negative finding. No presence, absence, causation or legal-eligibility conclusion follows.
