- DANFS records: Faith, a wooden-hulled auxiliary ketch built in 1926 at Essex, Mass., by the Arthur D. Story Shipyards, was acquired by motion picture director John Ford in June 1934, refurbished, and renamed Araner for the Aran Islands (his wife's family's home). Ford, appointed Lt. Comdr. USNR Sept. 1934, used Araner off Baja California for intelligence gathering per a biographer, and was commended by the 11th Naval District commandant in 1940. Taken over on bare-boat charter 27 January 1942 and delivered to the Navy at the section base, San Diego; classified miscellaneous auxiliary IX-57 and placed in service 26 February 1942. Assigned to the 11th Naval District, then to the Western Sea Frontier 23 July 1942; operated out of San Diego 'under sail power for much of the time,' patrolling off Guadalupe and San Clemente Islands. Laid up at Naval Frontier Base San Diego 1 May 1944; crew transferred to YAG-6; delivered to Mrs. John Ford 12 July 1944; struck from the Navy list 14 October 1944. Post-Navy: Ford sold her c.1971 to Fran M. Dimond of Honolulu; name retained into 1974; sold to San Marino Travel Service; resumed original name Faith c.1975; renamed Windjammer shortly after; acquired by Guam Rent-a-Car Company; tourist-carrying craft into the early 1980s. Spec block: dp. 147; l. 106'5"; b. 25'2"; dr. 10'6"; s. 8 k.

- Official narrative establishes identity, service stations, custody milestones, and the sail-primary operating mode; contains no asbestos, materials, machinery, or condition information and no complement figure. Designer (John G. Hanna) and first owner (Walden W. Shaw) attributions appear only in secondary compilations - not asserted here, carried in gaps.

- Finding
- The vessel's complete deck-log set is digitized in the NARA Catalog and covers the entire in-service period 26 February 1942 - 1 May 1944 in 9 file units. Page-level inspection of the first volume (NAID 146167861): cover page reads 'LOG BOOK OF THE U.S.S. Araner (IX-57) ATTACHED TO THE Sect Base 11th NAVAL DISTRICT,' district headquarters 'Foot of Broadway, San Diego,' section headquarters 'Section Base, San Diego,' beginning 1000 February 26 and ending July 12, 1942; the volume's 'List of Persons Attached' muster page carries approximately 20 enlisted ratings (ratings incl. CMM, RM, EM, SC, Sea, Cox, QM, SM, BM grades) reporting 2-26-42 and 4-6-42, plus the commanding officer (USNR).

- Ship's company, ~20 enlisted + commanding officer (1942-1944)
- Limitations
- Deck logs establish qualifying wartime service, station, and approximate complement; log coverage endpoints are not asserted as commissioning/decommissioning dates. Logbook images are scanned narrative pages - not machine-searched for asbestos or materials mentions; content beyond the covers and muster page of the first volume is uninspected. Muster count read from manuscript entries at 1200px resolution - moderate confidence on the count, names not transcribed for the record.

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era of this hull's 1942-44 naval service - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization in ship construction, conversion, and repair.

- Population
- WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (era context)
- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarship; does not name this vessel and does not establish that asbestos was installed, removed, or present aboard this hull. Applicability is materially narrowed here: the documented configuration is a wooden-hulled auxiliary ketch under sail power much of the time, with no steam plant, no boilers, and no documented Navy-yard overhaul - the principal asbestos vectors the study describes (steam-plant insulation, lagging, packing at scale) do not apply to this hull. No quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation is established.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming USS Araner, IX-57, or the Faith/Araner hull was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Unlike some peer hulls, law-firm marketing ship-list pages DO carry a 'USS Araner (IX-57)' entry (e.g., freeasbestostesting.com auxiliary-ships list; asbestos-ships.com carries IX-226, the other Araner hull) - an excluded source class whose indiscriminate coverage of virtually every Navy hull is noted for completeness and is not evidence of asbestos aboard this vessel.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - residual-era applications on a 1926 auxiliary ketch (engine exhaust lagging, gaskets, galley stove insulation, electrical insulation) are plausible but unverified, and the vessel's post-1998 undocumented status leaves no disposal/abatement trail. The marketing-list presence is a name-inclusion artifact, not documentation. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- CourtListener name and hull-number sweep, completed across multiple fleet-pacing windows: "Araner" opinions (type=o) - count 0, no opinion in the index contains the vessel name under either hull. "Araner" dockets (type=r) - 15 hits, all name collisions (bankruptcy, civil-rights, contract, and MDL dockets where 'Araner' matches a surname or a business name, e.g. 'American Modular Cooling LLC dba Araner,' Weems M&E removal N.D. Ga. 1:26-mi-99999); none maritime or asbestos-related. "IX-57" opinions - 15 hits, all collisions ('IX-57' as exhibit/reference fragment in non-maritime matters: Texas Medicaid, Illinois education-labor, parking employment, insurance, estate, university cases). "IX-57" dockets - 99 hits, all collisions (predominantly Title IX education dockets and exhibit/document-number matches; one In re Asbestos Products Liability Litigation MDL-875 index hit resolves to a Boeing Co. motion-response document number, not a vessel naming). No qualifying asbestos litigation names the ship under either identifier.

- Finding
- Archival leads (partially retrieved): the deck-log file units themselves (ev-02) are digitized but uninspected beyond covers and the opening muster page - daily narrative entries 1942-44 would record any in-port repair, overhaul, or material events aboard. RG 24 muster rolls would firm the crew count. Post-Navy U.S. Coast Guard documentation files (registrations reported by NavSource: John Ford Productions 1961, San Marino Travel Service 1971, Guam Rent A Car 1980, Worldwide Industries Saipan 1988) are not digitized and would document the hull's last inspected material condition. 11th Naval District and Western Sea Frontier records (RG 181, RG 313) would hold the section-base maintenance files for her 1942-44 service period.
