- Documented for this hull: laid down 17 March 1942 at Morris Heights, N.Y., by the Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp.; launched 23 May 1942; sponsored by Mrs. Junius S. Morgan; commissioned 1 September 1942, Lt. G. D. Tammers, USNR, in command. Shakedown along the U.S. east coast September-October 1942; reported for duty with the West Sea Frontier in November; by spring 1943 escorting ships among bases on the Alaskan coast and in the Aleutian Islands. Early April 1944 proceeded to Seattle for two months, then San Francisco until late September; moved to Pearl Harbor, then early October to Eniwetok, escorting convoys among bases in the Marshalls, Marianas, and Carolines through the end of WWII and into fall 1945. Returned to the west coast via Pearl Harbor spring 1946; placed out of commission at Astoria, Oregon, 27 July 1946; berthed with the Columbia River Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet for the rest of her career. Named Arcata in February 1956; stricken from the Navy list July 1960; sold April 1961. Spec block: dp. 280; l. 173'8"; b. 23'0"; dr. 10'10"; s. 20 k.; cpl. 65; a. 1 3", 2 20mm., 2 dcp., 2 dct.; cl. PC-W (web rendering; print DANFS reads PC-461).

- NavSource timeline for this hull ('The second Arcata'): laid down 17 March 1942 at Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp., Morris Heights, NY; launched 23 May 1942; commissioned USS PC-601, 1 September 1942; decommissioned 27 July 1946 at Astoria, Oregon and laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group; named Arcata 15 February 1956; struck from the Navy Register in July 1960; sold in April 1961 - 'Fate unknown.' Specifications: displacement 280 t. (lt), 450 t. (fl); length 173'8"; beam 23'; draft 10'10"; speed 20.2 kts; complement 65; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, one 40mm, three 20mm, two rocket launchers, four depth charge projectors, two depth charge tracks; propulsion two 1,440bhp Fairbanks-Morse 38D8-1/8 diesel engines (Serial Nos. 832277 and 832278), Westinghouse single reduction gear, two shafts. Also notes: 'Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 lists plan for decommissioning and placing in reserve as January 1947.' Eight commanding officers listed (all USNR lieutenants/LTJG).

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS and the two agree here except as noted. CO-list surname 'Lammers' conflicts with DANFS 'Tammers' (see gaps). Armament list is fuller than the DANFS spec block (40mm, rocket launchers not in DANFS block). Contains no asbestos content.

- Finding
- Four captioned photographs document this hull's fantail 'sitting in a Pearl Harbor Ship Yard drydock while being flooded' - physical-presence documentation of PC-601 in a Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard drydock, consistent with the DANFS-documented September-October 1944 Pearl Harbor transit and the spring 1946 return via Pearl Harbor.

- Crew and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard drydock trades during the documented drydocking (1944 or 1946)
- Limitations
- Archival lead only: photographs establish presence in a Pearl Harbor drydock, not what work (if any) was performed - a drydock photo is not an availability or overhaul record. Photos are undated in the captions; either the 1944 outbound transit or the 1946 return transit is consistent with the service history. No asbestos content.

[5]Era inference built on: NHHC DANFS spec block (PC-461-class dimensions/complement); NavSource specifications (2 x Fairbanks-Morse 38D8-1/8 diesels, Westinghouse reduction gear, 2 shafts - diesel plant, no steam); PC-461 class documentation (341 steel-hulled diesel submarine chasers built 1941-44 across 14 yards, Consolidated the second-most prolific with 51); GAO HRD-80-2 (see ev-05) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A steel-hulled diesel submarine chaser built March-August 1942 sits inside the Navy's documented wartime asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel combatant of this type and period were thermal insulation on machinery and diesel exhaust, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and interior finish/panel materials in the confined 173-foot hull. As a diesel-driven vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the small-ship confined-space exposure dynamic applies.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or builder specification located for PC-601. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull.

- Finding
- GAO reviewed 'the use of asbestos in Navy ships, the cost of removing asbestos from Navy ships, and compensation programs for asbestos-related disabilities' at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards - program-level documentation that asbestos was installed in Navy ships of this hull's era and that the Navy's asbestos-removal policy was still being worked out decades after this hull's construction (1975 policy: remove/replace only damaged insulation or insulation requiring removal for repairs; modified 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas).

- Program-level documentation; supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull. Fieldwork yards were Long Beach and Norfolk - neither touched this hull on the public record (her documented drydocking was Pearl Harbor). [7]Batch-7976 search ledger (this record): NHHC DANFS live page; NavSource/Wikipedia cross-check; Naval Vessel Register; firecrawl asbestos litigation sweep; NARA deck-log program; GAO product page; CourtListener authenticated API (opinion and docket, name and hull queries) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS Arcata / PC-601 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener: 'USS Arcata' opinion search verified zero; 'PC-601' docket search returned 724 hits, all 20 reviewed classified as name collisions (professional-corporation + street-number matches); 'USS Arcata' docket and 'PC-601' opinion queries were blocked by fleet-wide pacing exhaustion - logged as blocked, not as negative results. A live-web sweep surfaced no asbestos litigation naming this hull and no 'asbestos aboard' claims even in marketing sources - the hull is too small and obscure to appear in law-firm listicles.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built in the Navy's documented asbestos era and asbestos presence remains a reasonable era-consistent inference, not a ship-proven fact. Two of four CourtListener base queries could not be run (pacing throttled the whole session) - the litigation record is a genuine open gap, not a negative result. Deck logs, Consolidated Shipbuilding work packages, and the April 1961 sale/disposal records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
