- Finding
- Ash (YN-2) was launched 15 February 1941 at Houghton, Wash., by the Lake Washington Shipyards, Inc., and placed in service 1 July 1941 (Lt. Charles E. Ide, USNR, in charge). After brief net work in San Francisco Bay she departed 20 August 1941 for the 14th Naval District, arrived at the Bishop's Point section base, Oahu, 28 August 1941, and worked the Pearl Harbor anti-submarine nets. She was at Bishop's Point during the 7 December 1941 attack - fired sporadically at enemy planes, claimed no kills, suffered no casualties or damage. She served at Pearl Harbor through the end of the war; redesignated AN-7 and placed in full commission 20 December 1942 (Lt. J. H. Russell, USNR, in command). Departed Pearl Harbor 11 May 1946 for San Francisco; moored at Mare Island Naval Shipyard until 1 November 1946; out of commission at Vancouver, Wash., 13 December 1946; stricken from the Navy list 1 September 1962; transferred to the Maritime Administration for layup in the National Defense Reserve Fleet at Olympia, Wash.; sold 14 May 1971 to I. D. Logan for scrapping. DANFS spec block for YN-2: dp. 700 (f.); l. 151'8"; b. 30'6"; dr. 10'6"; s. 14 k.; cpl. 40; a. 1 3"; cl. Aloe.

- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 (Named Vessels) inventories U.S. Navy deck logs for Ash (YN-2/AN-7) covering 7/1/1941-12/31/1941 and 12/20/1942-6/30/1945. Batch-supplied NARA catalog coverage adds YN-2 deck logs for 1/1/1942-12/20/1942, i.e., the in-service (non-commissioned) 1942 period up to redesignation. Ash does not appear in NARA's online-digitized logbook index (WWII logs for this hull are paper holdings). Separately, the NARA catalog holds 79 digitized file units of Ash (YN-2) muster rolls and reports of changes, 1942-1947 (Pearl Harbor muster-roll collection; e.g., NAID 112280241, December 1942).

- USS Ash crew, 1941-1945 (deck-log period); crew members named on muster rolls 1942-1947
- Limitations
- Archival inventory only - logs and muster rolls were not retrieved or read; content (including any materials/asbestos references) is unknown until examined. Log coverage dates are inventory ranges, not commissioning/decommissioning dates. The catalog deck-log range 1/1/1942-12/20/1942 is batch-supplied and not independently re-verified this session (catalog search surfaced the muster-roll series, not the deck-log file unit).

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this 1941 naval auxiliary was built (class context: the first 32 steel net tenders of the Aloe class were contracted under the pre-Pearl Harbor expansion program, most keels laid October 1940, per the NavSource AN index).

- Population
- WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (class context)
- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarship and class history; neither source names this vessel. Does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. Diesel-electric auxiliaries carried a different insulation load than steam combatants - the era inference is weaker for this plant type.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or court finding naming YN-2 or AN-7 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener name queries returned only collisions: 'USS Ash' opinion search surfaced United States v. Mohamed Said, 798 F.3d 182 (4th Cir. 2015) - a Somali piracy prosecution arising from the attack on USS Ashland (LSD-48), a different hull; the 'USS Ash' docket hit was a pro se habeas petition (W.D. Tenn. 2023) containing the string in an attachment; the 'AN-7' hull-number queries returned 1,915 opinion and 56,393 docket results, all sampled hits being citation/docket-number collisions with none naming the ship. The hull was scrapped in 1971, so no present-day in-place condition question survives.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941 naval auxiliary is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials. The asbestos-qualified 'AN-7' variants were still pending (CourtListener fleet pacing budget) when this row was written - final status in the search ledger. Does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
