- Finding
- shipscribe (Stephen S. Roberts compilation of official Navy register/BuShips data) records ATR-12 ordered under contract of 1942-06-12, built by Frank L. Sample at Boothbay Harbor ME; keel laid 1944-05-22; launched 1944-12-16; commissioned 1945-02-24; decommissioned 1946-04-05; stricken 1946-05-08; disposal 1946-10-17 coded MC/D (Maritime Commission disposal) with MA sale the same date. Class data: design 'Navy ATR-1'; 852 t light / 1,315 t max; 165.4 ft oa; armament 1-3"/50 and 2-20mm; complement 51 (1944); 12.2 kts; 1,600 hp; one screw, vertical triple expansion. Class notes: ATR 1-40 were directed 1942-01-19 under the Maximum War Effort (1799 Vessel) Program; the Navy chose wooden hulls and simple triple-expansion steam machinery so small shipbuilders and machine shops could build them without competing with the main shipbuilding effort; one source attributes the design to the John G. Alden firm.

- Specialist secondary compilation transcribing official Navy data - the most detailed identity record located, and internally consistent with the NARA deck-log index start (1945-02-24) and the Boothbay launch clipping. Not itself the underlying BuShips/NVR document. Contains no asbestos, materials, or exposure content.

- NavSource per-hull record: ATR-1 class rescue tug; laid down in 1943 at Frank L. Sample Shipyard, Boothbay ME; launch and commissioning dates unknown; commissioned USS ATR-12 with LTjg. B.F. Gettula in command; decommissioning date unknown; struck from the Naval Register in 1946; final disposition 'fate unknown'; call sign NGUW; awards displayed: American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Spec block: displacement 852 t light / 1,315 t full; 165'6" x 33'4" x 15'6"; 12.2 kts; one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount and two single 20mm AA mounts; complement 5 officers and 47 enlisted; fuel NSFO 1,620 bbls; propulsion: one Prescott Co. vertical triple-expansion reciprocating steam engine, two Foster Wheeler 'D'-type boilers 200 psi saturated, two 60 kW 120V DC turbo-drive ship's-service generators, single propeller 1,600 hp. NavSource states no DANFS history exists for this hull.

- Ship's company (1945-1946), incl. LTjg. B.F. Gettula per NavSource
- Limitations
- Specialist secondary compilation - detailed but non-official. Its 'laid down in 1943' conflicts with shipscribe's keel date of 1944-05-22 (carried in gaps; shipscribe corroborated by the Boothbay clipping and NARA log index). 'Struck 1946' is consistent with shipscribe's 1946-05-08. Commissioning officer name Gettula is uncorroborated by an official source. No asbestos or materials content.

[4]National Archives, Special List #44, by Ship Numbers (deck-log index) [other_primary]

- PDF, ATR-12 row: '2/24/1945 - 6/30/1945'
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 ('by Ship Numbers') indexes ATR-12 deck logs covering 1945-02-24 through 1945-06-30. The index start coincides with the commissioned date recorded by shipscribe; the end reflects the index's WWII coverage period, not a documented end of operation.

- Limitations
- This is an index of surviving log coverage, not the logs themselves and not a commissioning record. NARA states deck logs do not directly document shipboard asbestos; logs would establish movements and assignments.

[5]DANFS, 'Halawa' (AOG-12) - official NHHC entry text via hazegray transcription mirror [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- Halawa narrative, December 1944 Canton Island-Pearl Harbor tow sentence
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The official DANFS entry for USS Halawa (AOG-12) states: 'While returning to Pearl Harbor from Canton Island 21 December 1944 Halawa suffered a serious generator failure and was towed the rest of the way by tug ATR-12,' with arrival 26 December 1944. This attribution cannot apply to this hull: ATR-12 was launched at Boothbay, Maine on 1944-12-16 - five days after the tow began in the central Pacific - and commissioned 1945-02-24. Documented as a conflict, not as service history; the towing tug's correct identity is undetermined (possibly a different numbered tug such as ATR-21, commissioned 1944-05-25).

- 1944-12
- Limitations
- The DANFS sentence names 'ATR-12' verbatim, but every construction record for this hull (shipscribe table, Boothbay launch clipping, NARA log index) places it incomplete in Maine in December 1944 - the official entry contains a misidentification. Recorded so downstream users do not cite Pacific service for this vessel. Does not document asbestos or exposure in either vessel.

- Part IV engagement eligibility tables (Awards-IV-16, Awards-IV-17): ATR hull entries; ATR-12 absent; NavSource file 09/40/40012 ribbon display
- Finding type

- Finding
- The Navy and Marine Corps Awards Manual (1953 revision), Part IV campaign-and-service-medal ship eligibility tables, contain no ATR-12 entry (other ATRs - 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 13, 15, 18, 31, 35, 38, 51-54, 56, 61, 62, 77, 80, 81, 87 - appear in engagement listings). NavSource's ribbon block for this hull displays only the American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Together these are consistent with stateside/non-combat-zone service during her 13 months in commission, but do not by themselves establish operating areas.

[7]Consolidated era/design inference - documented per-hull propulsion spec (NavSource block) and class design record (shipscribe) applied to 1944-1945 steam-auxiliary materials practice; era context per NARA asbestos research guide [other_primary]

- NavSource spec block (machinery); shipscribe class notes (wooden hull, triple-expansion machinery, Maximum War Effort program); https://www.archives.gov/research/military/navy/guided-topics/asbestos
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/design inference for this hull's documented machinery: a saturated-steam plant - two Foster Wheeler 'D'-type boilers at 200 psi, a Prescott vertical triple-expansion engine, and two steam-driven 60 kW service generators - installed in a wooden hull built 1944-1945. For WWII-era steam auxiliaries, period insulation products were commonly manufactured with asbestos fiber: boiler casing and drum insulation, steam-line lagging between boiler room and engine room, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, electrical insulation, fireproof/joiner insulation in accommodation spaces, and brake linings on the towing engine and windlass. The wooden hull reduces structural-fireproofing scope relative to a steel hull but does not remove the machinery insulation pathways.

- Finding type

- Finding
- NARA's asbestos research guide identifies the probative record series for hull-level asbestos work: Bureau of Ships RG 19 general/confidential/secret correspondence filed by hull designation ('ATR-12' and class correspondence 'ATR1 Class'), cartographic S39 insulation-and-lagging and S48 piping drawings, and private-yard correspondence under the QM filing code (Frank L. - The Boothbay Region Historical Society's Shipyard Collection #3 (Frank L. Sample yard records) holds an 11/1944 newspaper clipping recording that 'USS ATR 12' was to be launched 12/6 (1944) - consistent with the shipscribe keel and December 1944 launch - plus ATR-series construction photographs and blueprints (documented for sister ATR-7), yard correspondence, and a 1944 Sample yard history profile. The collection is the identified regional archival holding for construction-phase detail on this hull.
