- Establishes identity, construction dates, builder, and this hull's propulsion plant (named manufacturers) as of the April 1945 publication. Contains no asbestos or insulation-material statement; the documented steam plant supports - but does not prove - the era-level asbestos inference. Does not address wartime modifications or present-day materials.

[3]Narrative by Commander Byron S. Huie, Jr., USNR, 'Salvage ships Operations in Normandy Invasion,' recorded 18 August 1944 (U.S. Navy combat narrative; HyperWar transcription) [other_primary]

- HyperWar transcription, ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/rep/Normandy/Salvage-Huie.html (paragraphs describing unit composition, D-Day timeline, Susan B. Anthony, and closing assessment)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- ATR-2 was one of the three original ships of the combat salvage and fire-fighting unit commanded by CDR Huie, attached to Assault Force 'O' (Omaha Beach) within TG 122.3 (Salvage and Fire Fighting Group, Western Naval Task Force), each ship carrying ~20 additional salvage/fire-fighting specialists. Contemporaneous actions credited to ATR-2: D-Day 1152 emergency repairs to keep LCT 210 afloat; 1442 surveyed and towed damaged LST 375 to deep water; 1514 pumped/repaired LCTs 197 and 27 'close off DOG GREEN Beach, all the time under fire of enemy shore batteries'; recovered two adrift damaged LCTs for return to UK. On D+1, with transport Susan B. Anthony mined, burning and sinking, ATR-2 secured astern of Pinto and 'beat back the flames' with fire hoses enabling ~2,200 survivors to cross decks. Unit logged 390 major operations through 19 July 1944.

- 1944-05-1944-07 (Normandy operation); narrative recorded 1944-08-18
- Population
- ATR-2 crew (5 officers + 47 enlisted complement) plus ~20 embarked salvage/fire-fighting specialists (Huie narrative)
- Limitations
- Single contemporaneous narrative source (unit commander's recorded account); documents service history, not materials or asbestos content. Population relevance: the ~20 embarked specialists plus crew worked in close quarters on damaged, burning, and wrecked craft - an exposure-relevant duty profile, but no material content is established by this source.

- Finding type

- Finding
- The official awards manual lists 'ATR 2' eligible for engagement star E5 - Invasion of Normandy (including bombardment of Cherbourg), 6 Jun 1944 - 25 Jun 1944 - the single battle star credited for her WWII service.

- Population
- Crew embarked aboard during the Normandy window 6-25 Jun 1944
- Limitations
- Confirms one battle star (E5 Normandy window) only; does not describe the ship's specific actions and carries no material content. NAVPERS 15,790 is known to contain clerical errors for some hulls (see Naval History Division's own errata correspondence on HyperWar) - consistent here with the combat narrative and OPNAVNOTE 1650, so accepted.

- Special List #44, by Ship Numbers (archives.gov PDF), ATR-2 row: begin 11/22/1943, end 10/4/1945
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's deck-log index lists retained logbooks for 'ATR-2' covering 11/22/1943 - 10/4/1945 - a span that opens exactly on her documented commissioning date (22 Nov 1943) and closes on the decommissioning date carried by secondary compilations (4 Oct 1945). The logbook coverage corroborates the commission/decommission window in the official record and identifies the primary-source log series held for this hull.

- Limitations
- An index entry, not the logs themselves - it establishes that NARA holds the deck logs and their coverage dates; contents (including any damage, repair, or material references) are unretrieved and unknown. A logbook end date is consistent with, but does not itself prove, the decommissioning date.

- Abstract and article, AJIM 11(3):359-373
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Peer-reviewed scholarship documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this 1942-43 naval auxiliary was built - and that steam-propelled vessels carried asbestos-containing insulation on boilers, steam lines, and machinery spaces as documented wartime practice.

- Population
- WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (class/era context)
- Limitations
- Era/program-level documentation only; the article does not name this vessel or its class and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, individual exposure, or causation. ATR-2's documented steam plant (ev-uss-atr-2-01) makes the era inference concrete but does not elevate it to a ship-specific finding.

- Finding
- CourtListener sweeps located no qualifying litigation: opinion search "ATR-2" returned 6 hits, all name collisions (Redfern v. Napolitano, 1st Cir. 2013; EPIC v. TSA, D.D.C. 2013; Avocent v. Raritan, S.D.N.Y. 2013 patent; Kinzua Resources v. DEQ, Or. 2020; Fisher v. Brennan, E.D. Tenn. 1974; In re Ard, Tex. App. 2015); "USS ATR-2" returned 0 opinions; "ATR-2" + asbestos returned 0 opinions; RECAP docket search "ATR-2" returned 83 dockets, all token collisions on the bare designator (part/exhibit/product references) - no maritime or asbestos docket names the vessel.

- Limitations
- Opinion and RECAP docket coverage only; unreported dispositions, state-court filings outside CourtListener coverage, and settled claims are not captured. 'ATR-2' tokenizes ambiguously (e.g., ATR-72 aircraft references in TSA litigation) - results classified as name collisions on review of each caption/snippet. Hull-designator-only searches cannot fully exclude litigation under another name form; see search_ledger for all queries run.

- Finding

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-built naval steam auxiliary retaining original boilers, steam lines, and gaskets is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Archival leads (not retrieved - no spend authorized): (1) ATR-2 deck logs 11/22/1943-10/4/1945 are held by NARA per Special List 44 (RG 24). (2) ATR-2's WWII war diary (RG 38, WWII War Diaries series) exists for the class and period - sister ship ATR-3's June 1944 war diary is digitized on Fold3; ATR-2's is expected in the same series (paywalled). (3) COMTASKFOR 122 Action Report of Operations 6-17 Jun 1944 (RG 38) covers the TG 122.3 salvage group and is cited by reference works on the class. (4) BuShips contract/hull records for the Wheeler Whitestone construction (RG 19) may hold outfitting specifications.
