- Official-records compilation documents: contract earlier ordered from Weaver Shipyards 1942-06-19; built by Wheeler Shipbuilding, Whitestone; laid down 1943-03-20, launched 1944-02-26, commissioned 1944-04-20; no decommissioning entry; stricken 1946-01-03; disposal date 1945-11-10, fate 'Lost'. Ship note: 'Grounded 10 Nov 45 15 mi. north of "Juppot" (probably Jupiter) Inlet (eastern Florida) and near Fort Pierce. Salvageable gear removed and salvage operations discontinued. Hulk destroyed by burning and explosives between 30 May and 30 Jul 48.' Class data (ATR-1): 852 tons light / 1,315 max; 165.4' oa x 33.3' x 15.8'; complement 51 (1944); 12.2 kts; 1,600 HP, 1 screw, vertical triple expansion; wooden-hulled type procured under the Maximum War Effort (1799-Vessel) Program.

- Ship's company (complement-class ~51); Wheeler Shipbuilding construction trades (1943-44)
- Limitations
- Private specialist compilation of official Navy records (S. S. Roberts) - a transcription layer over BuShips/register documents, not the documents themselves; underlying originals are the NARA archival lead (ev-05). 'Juppot' is the register's own uncertain rendering, annotated by the compiler as probably Jupiter Inlet. Contains no asbestos or materials information; establishes no asbestos fact.

- Limitations
- Volunteer-compiled naval archive - a transcription layer over official registry/BuShips data, not the documents themselves. The 'Asiatic-Pacific Theater' assignment and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal ribbon are displayed but unsupported by any located deployment detail; all operational episodes found for this hull are Atlantic/Gulf Sea Frontier (see ev-03, ev-01 fate note) - theater claim carried as compiled, flagged in gaps. 'Disposed of in 1946, fate unknown' is superseded by the register-based grounding/1948-destruction record (ev-01). No asbestos or materials information.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Deck-log-derived narrative documents ATR-29's Gulf Sea Frontier salvage operation out of Miami: SC-1059 grounded hard on Six Shilling Cay, Bahamas, just before midnight 11 December 1944; ATR-29 was dispatched from Miami early 12 December, completed the ~220-mile passage and arrived mid-afternoon 13 December; over the following week her power launch ferried pumps ('handy billy' and 3-inch), gasoline, and salvage crew to the casualty; lead patches were placed over wardroom and engine-room holes; ammunition, 18 depth charges, and confidential radar equipment (receivers, transmitters, switch boxes, magnetron tubes) were removed to lighten ship; after two failed tow attempts (15 and 16 December) a third attempt on 18 December pulled SC-1059 off the reef at ~11:10 am; ATR-29 then towed her to Pier 3, Miami, arriving the morning of 20 December.

- Limitations
- Secondary narrative reconstruction built from SC-1059's deck log and related records, hosted on NavSource - detailed and internally timestamped but a single secondary source, not the deck log itself; the underlying logs are the NARA archival lead (ev-05). Establishes Atlantic/Gulf operations for this hull in December 1944, in tension with the uncorroborated Asiatic-Pacific assignment (ev-02). No asbestos or materials information.

[5]Corn, Jacqueline Karnell, and Jennifer Starr, 'Historical perspective on asbestos: Policies and protective measures in World War II shipbuilding,' American Journal of Industrial Medicine 11(3):359-373 (1987); class machinery data per Shipscribe ATR-1 class page and NavSource specifications (ev-01, ev-02) [other_primary]
- Locator
- AJIM 11(3):359-373 (abstract and article); Shipscribe ATR-1 class notes (wooden construction, machinery)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this wooden-hulled class was built (1943-44) and this hull's steam plant installed. The ATR-1 class carried two 200-psi Babcock & Wilcox 'D'-type boilers and a vertical triple-expansion steam engine; era-typical asbestos applications for such a plant include boiler and steam-drum insulation, steam-line lagging, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, and brake linings. The wooden hull means less hull/bulkhead insulation than a comparable steel vessel, but does not affect the machinery-space inference.

- Population
- Wheeler Shipbuilding construction trades (1943-44); engine-room crew ('black gang') in service
- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally, plus class machinery data - neither names this hull nor establishes that asbestos was aboard it; no quantity, location, or condition can be stated. Wooden-hull construction makes the class an atypical asbestos candidate relative to steel combatants in any case. Does not establish exposure for any individual.

- Locator
- Special List 44 (NARA), ship-number index, 'ATR-29 4/20/1944 11/27/1945'
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's Special List 44 indexes surviving deck logs for ATR-29 covering 1944-04-20 through 1945-11-27 - spanning the full commissioned life (from commissioning day) through the post-grounding salvage wrap-up (17 days after the 1945-11-10 casualty). These logs would resolve the undocumented Pacific-theater question and record the grounding and salvage-abandonment in the crew's own hand; they are paper holdings, not digitized.

- Limitations
- Index entry establishes that logs exist and their coverage dates; their contents are unreviewed - existence of asbestos-relevant material inside them is unknown until surveyed in person. The 1945-11-27 end date is consistent with, but does not itself document, the loss timeline. No asbestos information.

- Finding
- No qualifying litigation located: exact-phrase opinion searches '"ATR-29"' and '"USS ATR-29"' each returned 0 results across the CourtListener opinion index - no asbestos litigation, no other litigation, and no name collisions naming this hull (the designation is a low-collision numeric string).

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, occupational-medicine record, or docketed case naming this hull was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Structural note: the hull was wrecked 1945-11-10, stripped of salvageable gear, and destroyed in place by burning and explosives in mid-1948 - no surviving hull exists to survey, so no future ship-specific survey record can be generated.
