    Finding
NavSource compiles the designation chain for this hull: 'Originally planned as Coastal Minesweeper, Augury (AMc 126); Reclassified as a Minesweeper, AM-149, 21 February 1942'; laid down 7 December 1942 by Tampa Shipbuilding Co. Inc., Tampa FL; launched 23 February 1943; commissioned USS Augury (AM-149); decommissioned 18 July 1945 at Cold Bay, transferred to the Soviet Union and reclassified T-334. The Tampa Shipbuilding order was thus an AMc-designated contract redesignated to the Admirable-class fleet-minesweeper program before keel-laying; the AMc-126 number was never carried by a ship in service. Corroborated by the uswarships.jounin.jp AMc index ('Augury | AMc-126 | Tampa Shipbuilding | commissioned 1944/3/17 | 1942/2/21 reclassified to minesweeper AM-149') - secondary reference used for corroboration only, not cited as evidence.

    Limitations
Volunteer-compiled archival page - the located source for the 21 Feb 1942 redesignation date; unlike sister Adopt (AMc-114), DANFS's Augury entry does NOT mention the AMc-126 designation at all, so the chain rests on NavSource plus the jounin corroboration - no primary contract document located. Contains no asbestos information. Live navsource.org fetch failed (unreachable, curl 000, 2026-09-22); content verified via the 2024-05-27 Wayback capture documented in the canonical record.

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The official record knows this hull only as AM-149: the DANFS entry is headed 'Augury (AM-149)' and records the ship laid down 7 December 1942 at Tampa, Fla., by the Tampa Shipbuilding Co., Inc.; launched 23 February 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Helen K. MacLean; commissioned 17 March 1943, Lt. A. G. Wood, USNR, in command - then the full Aleutian/TF 91 and Project Hula service narrative. DANFS contains no 'AMc-126' or coastal-minesweeper mention for Augury - unlike its Adopt entry, which explicitly documents that hull's AMc-114 origin ('Originally projected as AMc-114 but redesignated prior to the start of construction'). The designation chain therefore rests on NavSource (ev-01); DANFS independently confirms the identity and service of the built hull the AMc-126 contract became.

    Limitations
Establishes the built hull's identity and service record under AM-149 - not the AMc designation chain, and no asbestos/materials content. Commissioning year (1943) conflicts with the TASCO yard table, the NARA logbook begin date (ev-04), and the jounin index (all reading March 1944) - conflict carried in the canonical record's gaps. Finding
All-tier consolidation: AMc-126 and AM-149 are one contract hull, not two vessels. The batch listing 'USS Augury (AMC-126)' resolves to the canonical record uss-augury-am149 (Tier 2), which carries the full service history (commissioned 17 March 1943 per DANFS - 1944 per the counter-evidence chain; Little Creek shakedown; TF 91 Aleutian escort and minesweeping service; Project Hula transfer at Cold Bay, 18 Jul 1945 per DANFS/NavSource, 19 Jul per Russell NHC; Soviet T-334, Maj. Gen. Gnechko's HQ ship for the Kuril landing operation; dispatch ship Gazimur 1955; receiving ship BRN-12 1956; scrapped ~1960; struck 1 Jan 1983), the NARA archival leads, and the era/type asbestos inference. This record exists so the former designation resolves to the canonical hull rather than reading as a second vessel.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
All federal archival records for this hull are indexed under AM-149, not the AMc designation: NARA Special List 44 indexes the hull as 'Augury (AM-149)' with a deck-log run covering 3/17/1944-7/18/1945; no AMc-126 index entry exists. Two probative details in that row: (1) the logbook begin date 17 March 1944 corroborates the 1944-commissioning counter-evidence (TASCO yard table, jounin index) against DANFS's 17 March 1943 - deck logs open at commissioning, and a March-1943-commissioned ship would not open its logbook a year late; (2) the end date 18 July 1945 matches the documented transfer date. NARA's asbestos-research guide identifies the series that would hold hull-level material specifications - RG 19 Entry P-11 Minesweeper and Minelayer General Information Books (Item S-68, 1940-1962) and the hull-number-arranged Ship Engineering Drawings (S39 Insulation and Lagging, S48 Piping, S103 Booklets of General Plans). Any researcher tracing 'AMc-126' must search the archive as AM-149.

USN complement aboard the built hull, 1944-1945 (logbook coverage)
    Limitations
Archival lead only - documents which series exist and under which hull number, not that hull-specific material survives in them; no drawing, GIB, or logbook page was retrieved or confirmed. Deck logs are operational records, not materials documentation. The 3/17/1944 begin date is corroboration in the commissioning-year conflict, not a resolution - a commissioning-certificate or logbook first-page pull remains the resolution path.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull under any designation was located - with a stated boundary: the authenticated CourtListener API was hard-throttled for the day on every attempted query (HTTP 429 'Rate limit exceeded: 2800/day; Expected available in ~11173 s', 2026-09-22), covering this session's AMc-126 designation-string opinion search and the 'USS Augury' type=r RECAP check, AND the canonical record's own same-day hull battery (its first 'USS Augury' opinion query also returned 429 and the remainder was not attempted into the ban). The negative therefore rests on web-indexed sources only: opinion mirrors and legal-content indexes surfaced no qualifying case naming the hull; the only litigation-adjacent hit is an uncitable law-firm marketing claim of a '$1.65 million' settlement for 'a Minnesota Navy veteran who served aboard the USS Augury' / 'a Minnesota laborer who served on the USS Augury' (Simmons Hanly Conroy-affiliated sites - no case name, court, docket, or year; carried in gaps).

    Limitations
Bounded negative finding - the API docket battery is blocked, not completed, for BOTH this designation record and the canonical hull record (same-day shared cap consumed by parallel batch agents; ~3 h to reset at research time). CourtListener coverage also skews to digitized federal opinions and RECAP dockets; state-court filings and non-digitized dockets are underrepresented, and a settled case may leave no published opinion. Establishes only that no qualifying case was located in the sources actually searched.

    Finding
Era/type inference for the physical hull - built as AM-149, a steel Admirable-class fleet minesweeper at Tampa Shipbuilding (TASCO) 1942-43, during the period when asbestos supply was federally reserved for shipbuilding - plausibly carried period-standard asbestos-containing materials in applications typical for the type: diesel exhaust and muffler lagging, machinery-space thermal/acoustic insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical cable and switchboard insulation, accommodation joiner material and deck composition, and winch/windlass/sweep-gear brake linings. Because the plant was direct-drive diesel (two ALCO 539 engines, reduction gear, no boilers or steam distribution), the dominant WWII asbestos pathway aboard steam vessels - boiler and steam-line lagging - did not exist on this hull. Wartime Navy construction-era asbestos use is documented program-wide: Fleischer et al. (1946) found amosite 'an important ingredient of pipe covering material used on U.S. Navy vessels' under Navy specification; Corn & Starr (1987) document the WWII shipbuilding surge in asbestos fireproofing/insulation. This inference applies identically here because AMc-126 is the same hull's pre-construction designation.

    Limitations
Inference from era, builder, and vessel type only - no ship-specific document names any asbestos product aboard this hull under any designation; neither paper names this hull or class, and the Fleischer survey centers on steam-plant pipe covering in Navy contract yards. No material schedule located (NARA RG 19 series, ev-04, are the lead). Applies to the built hull AM-149; the AMc-126 designation itself carried no ship and so has no asbestos history of its own. Limitations
Yard-level documentation, not a hull record - asbestos products documented at the yard do not establish installation aboard this hull. The dataset's asbestos_products_documented field is carried at face value; the yard record's own evidence array is empty in shipyards.json, so the underlying yard-level citations are not inspectable from the dataset file. The record also conflates TASCO (Ybor Channel, builder of this hull) with the separate McCloskey/Tampa Bay Shipbuilding lineage - flagged for dataset cleanup in the canonical record's gaps.
