Establishes identity, construction, service, and disposal only — DANFS contains no asbestos, materials, or exposure content. vessel_history
    Finding
The supplied name 'USS Avenge (AMC-65)' is a pre-service name only: hull AMc-65 was named Avenge on 1941-05-17 and renamed Assertive on 1941-05-23, months before launch and well before entering service; she never operated as 'Avenge.' The name was reassigned to sister hull AMc-66 — laid down as Bulwark at the same Bristol yard on 1941-05-08, renamed Avenge, in service 1942-04-02, served at Charleston, sold 1946 to United Fisheries Co., Gloucester, Mass. A third Navy 'Avenge,' AM-423/MSO-423 (Aggressive-class ocean minesweeper, Luders Marine, Stamford CT; in commission 1954–1970), is a completely different hull. Exposure claims or records naming 'USS Avenge' must be checked against all three identities.

    Limitations
Documents the name/identity chain only — resolves which hull the 'Avenge' name attached to and when; contains no asbestos information. DANFS AMc-66 entry dates that hull's rename to 1941-05-17 while the AMc-65 entry says the name was reassigned on 1941-05-23 — a one-week internal inconsistency in DANFS noted for completeness; immaterial to this hull's identity.

Volunteer-compiled secondary archive corroborating official records — treated as corroboration, not a primary source. Complement (17) conflicts with DANFS (19); draft (9'1") differs trivially from DANFS (9'0"); discrepancies logged in gaps. Contains no asbestos or materials content.

    Finding type

    Finding
Class/era design context: the Accentor class were wooden-hulled, ~195–205-ton coastal minesweepers of a single 97-foot, 10-knot design, powered by a single small diesel engine (this hull: one 400 bhp Atlas 6HM-2124 per NavSource). There is no boiler, no steam plant, and no steam piping — the dominant WWII-ship asbestos pathway (boiler/steam-line insulation and lagging) is absent by design. Any era-consistent asbestos use would be confined to minor components (engine gaskets and packing, possible exhaust lagging, electrical insulation); none is itemized for the class or documented for this hull.

    Population
Construction trades (Bristol Yacht Building, 1941); wartime engine-room crew
    Limitations
Class-level design facts from a reputable secondary compilation, not a hull materials record. Absence of a steam plant removes the largest typical asbestos pathway but does NOT prove zero asbestos aboard; minor-component use is plausible for the era but unverified for both class and hull. Does not establish exposure, quantity, or any present-day condition.

    1943–1944 (indexed ranges)
    Limitations
Index entry only — the logs themselves were not retrieved or examined, and WWII deck logs record operational events, not construction materials; they are unlikely to resolve the asbestos question directly. Indexed coverage is partial (two ranges); logs for the remainder of the service period are not listed in SL-44. National Archives Catalog is a JS application that returned no machine-readable result to automated query on 2026-09-23, so digitization status of these logs is unconfirmed.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming Assertive, Avenge, or AMc-65/AMC-65 was found in the sources searched (see search_ledger). The single hull-number hit is a name collision — an American Maritime Cases reporter citation ('AMC' + page) inside Clyde Flowers v. Travelers Insurance Co., 5th Cir. 1958, a maritime workers'-compensation/jurisdiction case unrelated to this vessel.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard; the wooden diesel design removes the principal steam-plant pathway but era materials in minor components remain possible and unverified. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. The 'AMC-65' docket-level RECAP query was blocked by fleet pacing budget; name-level docket and opinion searches all returned zero qualifying hits.
