- Finding
- Documented for this hull: launched 2 April 1942 by Electric Boat Co., Groton (sponsor Mrs. Charles A. Dunn); commissioned 8 July 1942, Lt. Comdr. J. R. Waterman. Twelve war patrols - reconnaissance for the North Africa invasion, five Atlantic/European patrols against Axis blockade runners from Roseneath, Scotland, then seven Pacific patrols after a New London overhaul (July-September 1943); officially credited with 17 enemy vessels (96,628 tons) including escort carrier Unyo. Eleventh patrol under Cmdr. E. B. Fluckey penetrated Namkwan Harbor 22-23 January 1945 against a ~30-ship convoy - Fluckey received the Medal of Honor and Barb the Presidential Unit Citation. After a stateside yard overhaul adding 5-inch rocket launchers, her twelfth patrol fired the first submarine-launched rockets in warfare and landed a party that destroyed a railroad train - Navy Unit Commendation. Out of commission in reserve at New London 12 February 1947; recommissioned 3 December 1951 (Key West); Guppy conversion February-August 1954; decommissioned and loaned to Italy 13 December 1954.

- Limitations
- Ship-specific history only; contains no asbestos or material content. DANFS ends at the 1954 transfer - the Guppy-era yard is not named by DANFS; NavSource documents a November 1954 Portsmouth NSY modernization before transfer.

- Finding
- NavSource data block documents the post-DANFS chronology: modernized at Portsmouth NSY, Kittery, Maine, November 1954 during preparations for transfer; loaned to Italy 13 December 1954 (Italian submarine Enrico Tazzoli, S-511); her name was canceled 28 April 1959 to clear it for SSN-596; struck from the Naval Register 15 October 1972; sold for scrapping 1 April 1975 by the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service.

- NavSource SS-220 data block, name-cancellation line

- Finding
- NAME-NAME note for downstream litigation sweeps: 'USS Barb' also names SSN-596, a Permit-class nuclear attack submarine built at Ingalls, Pascagoula (ordered March 1959, in service 1963-1989) - the reason this hull's name was canceled in 1959. Asbestos-era litigation naming 'USS Barb' is far more likely to concern SSN-596; any hit must be resolved before attribution to SS-220.

- Locator
- class-f/gato-class.class.json row ev-gato-class-07; NavSource SS-220 spec block
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/design inference for a diesel-electric fleet submarine of the Gato class: the boats have no boilers or steam plant - era-consistent asbestos-relevant applications are diesel-exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, galley and refrigeration insulation, and electrical/battery materials. All construction and documented Navy-yard periods on this hull fall inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era. This hull was built 1941-42, overhauled at New London (1943), stateside-yarded for rocket-launcher installation (early 1945), Guppy-converted (1954), and modernized at Portsmouth NSY (November 1954) before Italian transfer - all pre-substitution-era insulation events.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - does not establish that any asbestos-containing material is or was installed aboard this hull, and does not establish quantity, individual exposure, or present-day presence. No hull-specific insulation survey or material list was located.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2 (full text blocked, HTTP 403)
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - meaning every construction, overhaul, and repair event on this hull (built 1941-42 with U.S. Navy yard periods through 1954) predates the substitution era.

[6]Batch-31 search ledger (this record): DANFS transcription; NavSource; site-scoped CourtListener index sweep [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-barb-ss220-01 through -06
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for SS-220: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming THIS hull was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener API search was rate-limit throttled on 2026-09-18 (HTTP 429; site search interface and feeds also blocked); site-scoped web searches of courtlistener.com for 'USS Barb'/'SS-220' returned no qualifying asbestos case for this hull (a 'USS Barbey' (FF-1088) vessel-list entry in Siegfried v. Owens-Illinois is a different ship - near-miss collision noted).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard or of filings - state-court and non-digitized records are not covered and the CourtListener API sweep could not be completed under rate limiting. 'USS Barb' hits require SS-220/SSN-596 resolution before attribution; 'Barbey' (FF-1088) is a different ship. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
