- Documented for this hull: wooden-hulled net tender YN-60 laid down 19 December 1942 at Everett, Wash., by Everett Pacific Shipbuilders and Dry Dock Co.; named Baretta 17 March 1943; launched 9 October 1943; sponsored by Miss Evelyn Jaramo, 11-year-old daughter of a shipfitter at the building yard; reclassified net-laying ship AN-41 on 20 January 1944; commissioned alongside Pier 'A' at the builder's yard 18 March 1944, Lt. Comdr. Ravenel L. Collins in command. Fitted out at Seattle; shakedown out of San Pedro; sailed for Hawaii 20 June 1944; Service Squadron Six duty in forward areas; Peleliu from 18 September 1944; four months maintaining net defenses in the Palaus (rescued 11 men from mined LCT-579, 4 Oct 1944); engine-room fire 16 January 1945, towed to Eniwetok by sister Cliffrose (AN-42), repaired alongside Oahu (ARG-5); Pearl Harbor availability Feb-Apr 1945; Ulithi main net line May-Jun 1945 relieving mine-damaged Viburnum (AN-57); Okinawa July 1945 (Kerama Retto net removal, Buckner Bay moorings, two typhoon evasions); salvaged a Japanese midget submarine at Unten Ko with Catclaw (AN-60) in early August 1945; occupation duty laying channel buoys at Kii Suido/Wakanoura Wan, Japan, from 11 September 1945; rode out a third typhoon at anchor 17-18 September (clocked winds 81-89 knots); departed Japanese waters 29 December 1945; pre-inactivation overhaul at Mare Island Navy Yard; decommissioned 4 April 1946; stricken 8 May 1946. One battle star for participation in the occupation of the Southern Palaus. Spec block: AN-41: dp. 1,460; l. 194'6"; b. 34'7"; dr. 11'8"; s. 12.1 k.; cpl. 56; a. 1 3-inch, 4 20mm; cl. Ailanthus.

- Finding
- NARA's Special List 44 (named-vessels logbook inventory) lists deck logs for Baretta (AN-41) covering 3/18/1944 - 6/30/1945, described by NARA as logbooks available online in the National Archives Catalog. The begin date coincides with her commissioning (18 March 1944). These are surviving-log coverage dates in the inventory, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning authority beyond what DANFS gives.

- Finding
- NARA holds the ship's own war diary covering 28 June - 15 August 1945 (NAID 83568341, micro serial 140025) - the source document from which the DANFS narrative was plainly built; the period covers the Kerama Retto net removal, both typhoon evasions, and the 4 August midget-submarine salvage with Catclaw. NARA still pictures document the same hull: 80-G-350020 (undated view received October 1945, used as the DANFS plate) and the 80-G-350051/-052/-054 series of the midget-sub salvage at Untan Ro with Catclaw (AN-60), released for publication 21 January 1946.

- Finding
- The Ailanthus (AN-38) class: 30 wooden-hulled net tenders of the 1942 program, wood substituted for steel about 10 April 1942, single-screw diesel-electric plants (Busch-Sulzer), bow horns for net handling, and winches fore and aft that made the ships useful also as salvage vessels and tugs. Baretta's construction row: ordered 12 May 1942, Everett-Pacific SB, keel 19 Dec 1942, launched 9 Oct 1943, commissioned 18 Mar 1944. Built inside the Navy's documented asbestos era (GAO HRD-80-2, see ev-06); era-standard applications aboard a diesel-electric auxiliary of this type and period were diesel-exhaust and muffler lagging, machinery insulation, gaskets, valve and pump packing, winch brake linings, and electrical wiring insulation. As a diesel-electric ship she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway does not apply.

- Class/era inference only: no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or contract work package located for YN-60/AN-41. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity, no manufacturer attribution. Wooden hull reduces but does not eliminate the insulation pathway (machinery spaces, exhaust trunks, and accommodation fit-out are still wood-era naval practice). Does not establish exposure of any individual.

- DANFS documents that Baretta underwent pre-inactivation overhaul at the Mare Island Navy Yard and decommissioned there on 4 April 1946. The project's yard dataset documents asbestos-containing products at Mare Island Naval Shipyard - Unibestos, Marinite boards, Transite pipe, Kaylo, Careytemp, Gold Bond, Super 66, pump and valve packing, gaskets, bonnet insulation, refractory materials - per the 1998 Navy/Vallejo Final EIS/EIR (ACM in shipyard buildings and industrial wastes) and the Collins v. Plant Insulation litigation (Mare Island welder's mesothelioma, exposure window 1976-1994).

- Limitations
- Yard-level documentation only: establishes that asbestos was present and used at the yard across its history, NOT that asbestos work was performed on or removed from this hull in the 1946 pre-inactivation overhaul - no overhaul work package for Baretta was located. The Collins exposure window (1976-94) postdates this overhaul by three decades. DTIC PDF for the EIS was unreachable this session (site under maintenance); figures carried from the dataset entry.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS Baretta (YN-60/AN-41) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper returned fleet-wide pacing stand-downs on every attempt; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying asbestos content naming this ship - no law-firm listicle carrying the hull was found either.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942-43 wooden diesel auxiliary sits inside the Navy's asbestos era, so presence is a reasonable era-consistent inference, not a ship-proven fact. The litigation repository is a genuine open gap (paced, not run). Deck logs, war diaries beyond NAID 83568341, and Everett-Pacific contract/work-package records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding type

- Finding
- CORRECTIONS: (a) Salvor identity - the DANFS Baretta entry names the midget-submarine salvage partner as 'the coastal minesweeper Reaper (AMc-89),' but AMc-89 was USS Memorable (West Coast-built, in service through 7 Dec 1945), and the only commissioned USS Reaper (AMc-96, ex-Power, renamed 10 Sep 1944) is documented by its own DANFS entry as Caribbean/San Juan through the war - the war-diary-derived name and the printed hull number cannot both be right, and the identity is unresolved in published records. (b) Machinery - Wikipedia/uboat.net list 'diesel electric, 2,500 hp' (uboat adds 17 kts); Shipscribe's BuShips-derived class data and the NavSource spec block give Busch-Sulzer diesel-electric, single screw, 1,200 shp, 12.1 kts - the 2,500-hp/17-kt figures are class-article errors propagated to this hull. (c) Dimensions - DANFS spec block prints beam 34'7" and draft 11'8"; NavSource prints 37' and 13'6" and Shipscribe's class line gives 37.0' x 13.5' - the DANFS figures look transposed with a sister class's; BuShips-derived figures carried in this record's fields.
