- Finding
- NHHC identifies Barker as a Clemson-class destroyer built at Philadelphia by William Cramp and Sons, laid down 30 April 1919, launched 11 September 1919, commissioned 27 December 1919, with design complement 132. The history places her in Turkish waters in 1920, the Asiatic Fleet, at Tarakan when the Pacific war began in December 1941, on Dutch East Indies convoy duty, in overhaul at Mare Island in August-October 1942, and on Atlantic escort and antisubmarine duty from 1943. She was decommissioned 18 July 1945, stricken 13 August, and sold 30 November 1945.

- Limitations
- The DANFS entry verifies identity and service, not asbestos content, material quantities, individual exposure, or a detailed propulsion specification. Its complement is the listed design figure rather than an independently verified wartime muster.

[3]National Archives, Special List 44 - Named Vessels [other_primary]
- Locator
- Alphabetical table, Barker (DD-213) row
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's Special List 44 named-vessel index lists Barker (DD-213) with dates 27 December 1919 through 18 July 1945 as a lead for locating ship logbooks.

- Documentation level
- ship_specific
- Accessed
- 2026-09-27
- Limitations
- This is a logbook index, not a review of the underlying logs or a materials inventory. NARA says deck logs may show a ship's presence in a yard but do not identify work or materials. The date range does not show that every log survives or is digitized, and it does not establish asbestos aboard.

- Finding type

- Finding
- NIOSH's history says the Navy's use of asbestos to insulate pipes in naval vessels increased as World War II began and discusses Navy recognition of dust hazards by 1939.

[5]NHHC DANFS Barker entry, checked against NARA Special List 44 and NIOSH respiratory-protection history; see search ledger sl-01 through sl-04 [other_primary]
- Locator
- Entire vessel entry; NARA Barker index row; NIOSH 1920-1950 section
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The reviewed NHHC vessel history, NARA named-vessel logbook index, and NIOSH fleet-era account do not provide a Barker-specific asbestos survey, material specification, abatement record, or exposure finding. Direct documentation of asbestos aboard DD-213 remains unknown.

- Limitations
- A bounded negative search result, not proof that Barker was asbestos-free. Undigitized Navy specifications, repair work packages, private records, and unsearched litigation material could alter this finding.

[6]Naval History and Heritage Command, Navy Department Library, John H. Kauffman Collection finding aid [other_primary]
- Locator
- Index Terms, Corporate subject: Barker (DD-213)
- Finding type

- Finding
- NHHC's finding aid for the John H. Kauffman manuscript collection indexes Barker (DD-213) among the collection's corporate subjects.

- Limitations
- The finding aid is not a review of the manuscript. It establishes only an indexed association with DD-213, not the manuscript's specific contents or asbestos aboard.

[7]CourtListener API v4 authenticated search response for 'DD-213' docket, plus fleet helper pacing diagnostics, 27 September 2026; see search ledger sl-05 and sl-07 [court_record]
- Locator
- 14 returned docket results; other queries exited 2 at pacing limiter before HTTP response
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- The authenticated CourtListener hull-number docket search for 'DD-213' returned 14 index hits. Two New York cases use DD-213 as an exhibit label, and the other 12 returned records do not identify Barker in visible metadata; none is a verified Barker asbestos case. Exact-name opinion and docket searches and hull-number opinion search were not completed because the shared fleet pacing budget remained unavailable on later attempts.

- Accessed

- Limitations
- The 14 hits are classified from returned index metadata only; underlying attachments were not inspected and exact matching terms are not exposed for 12 hits. The uncompleted searches are gaps, not no-result findings. No pleading allegation, merits finding, or exposure evidence about Barker was found in the completed search.

[8]National Archives, 'Information NOT Included in Deck Logs' [other_primary]
- Locator
- Section on shipyard work and materials
- Finding type

- Finding
- NARA explains that Navy deck logs can record when a ship was moored or dry-docked at a yard, but do not identify the work done or materials used.

- Limitations
- This is guidance on the scope of deck logs generally; it is not a review of Barker's logs and provides no DD-213 asbestos finding.
