[1]DANFS, 'Barrier' (AM-150) - printed-entry verbatim transcription at the losthistory.net/hazegray mirror (hazegray.org itself unreachable at fetch time; live history.navy.mil page returns 404) + revised online entry by Raymond A. - Finding
- The printed DANFS entry opens the designation chain: 'Barrier (AMc-127) was reclassified AM-150, 21 February 1942; launched 23 February 1943 by Tampa Shipbuilding Co., Inc., Tampa, Fla., sponsored by Mrs. Eugenie Bradford, wife of Lieutenant L. M. Bradford; and commissioned 10 May 1944, Lieutenant D. T. Ehrmann in command.' The revised NHHC online entry supplies the laying down (7 Dec 1942, Tampa Shipbuilding Company, Incorporated) and the full service record - all under AM-150: Alaskan convoy-escort/minesweeping duty from 14 Aug 1944 for 11 months; decommissioned at Cold Bay 18 Jul 1945 and 'simultaneously transferred to the Soviet Navy under lend lease'; carried as MSF-150 from 7 Feb 1955; struck 1 Jan 1983. The official record establishes that AMc-127 was a pre-construction contract designation only - no hull was ever laid down, launched, or commissioned under it.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents the designation chain and the built hull's identity and service - not materials or asbestos content. The revised entry (the better authority for service history) does not mention AMc-127 at all; the designation chain rests on the older printed entry, which carries its own defects: it omits the laying-down date, reads 'July 1946' for the Alaska service/Russian-crew training window (inconsistent with the Jul 1945 transfer), and shows a variant spec block (dp 630; dr 10'; a. 1 3"). Its transcriber's note propagates the T-525 misidentification (see canonical record ev-03). Live NHHC page 404s - standing link rot; verbatim transcriptions cited.

- NavSource archive page for this hull, headed 'Barrier (MSF 150) ex-AM-150 / ex-AMc-127': 'Originally planned as Barrier (AMc 127); Reclassified AM-150, 21 February 1942; Laid down 7 December 1942 by the Tampa Shipbuilding Co. Inc., Tampa, FL; Launched 23 February 1943; Commissioned USS Barrier (AM 150), 10 May 1944; Decommissioned 18 July 1945 at Cold Bay, AK; transferred to the Soviet Union and reclassified T-335; Assigned to the Pacific Fleet 7 August 1945 and participated in the landing at Seisen (Chongjin), Korea; Reclassified MSF-150, 7 February 1955; Reclassified as a Dispatch Ship, Named Istok 17 October 1955; Scrapped 11 July 1956; Struck from the Naval Register 1 January 1983.' The Tampa contract was thus an AMc-designated order redesignated to the Admirable-class fleet-minesweeper program ~9.5 months before keel-laying; the AMc-127 number was never carried by a ship in service.

- Limitations
- Volunteer-compiled archive, not a government record. Its reclassification line is corroborated by the printed DANFS entry (ev-01) and the uswarships AMc index (secondary corroboration, ledger sl-06). Its Soviet-service particulars (Seisen/Chongjin landing; dispatch-ship rename Istok; scrapped 11 Jul 1956) are uncorroborated by Russell or DANFS - carried in the canonical record's gaps. - Finding
- All-tier consolidation: AMc-127 and AM-150 are one contract hull, not two vessels. The batch listing 'USS Barrier (AMC-127)' resolves to the canonical record uss-barrier-am150 (Tier 2, batch-1174), which carries the full service history (commissioned 10 May 1944; 11 months Aleutians convoy-escort/minesweeping; decommissioned and transferred to the USSR at Cold Bay under Project Hula - 18 Jul per revised DANFS, 19 Jul per the NHC appendix; Soviet designation T-335; scrapped 1956), the NARA archival leads, and the era/type asbestos inference. 'AMC-127' is a capitalization variant of AMc-127. The NHC transfer appendix names the hull only as 'Barrier (AM 150)' - the official transfer record knows no AMc designation. This record exists so the former designation resolves to the canonical hull rather than reading as a second vessel.

- Finding
- All federal archival records for this hull are indexed under AM-150, not the AMc designation: NARA Special List 44 indexes the hull's deck logs as 'Barrier (AM-150)' with a single coverage run 5/10/1944-7/18/1945 (the entire U.S. commission); NARA's asbestos-research guide identifies the series that would hold hull-level material specifications - RG 19 Entry P-11 Minesweeper and Minelayer General Information Books (Item S-68, 1940-1962) and hull-number-arranged Ship Engineering Drawings (filing codes S39 Insulation and Lagging, S48 Piping, S103 Booklets of General Plans). Navy Detachment 3294 (Cold Bay) records document the Project Hula transfer program. Any researcher tracing 'AMc-127' must search the archive as AM-150.

- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull under any designation was located. This session's authenticated CourtListener queries ('USS Barrier', 'AMc-127', 'AMC-127', 'AMC 127'; type=o) were blocked at the shared API throttle (HTTP 429, 2800/day consumed by same-day batch agents; 'Expected available in 10937 seconds') - not retried per batch rules; the canonical record's same-day pass met the same throttle. The 2026-09-22 web litigation sweep (canonical + this session's re-verification) found no docketed case and no Board of Veterans Appeals decision naming the hull - only name-in-list entries on law-firm marketing pages (mesothelioma.com minesweeper roster 'USS Barrier | AM-150 | Admirable | 5/10/1944 | To Soviet Union, 1945'; mesotheliomaveterans.org minesweeper list; mesotheliomahope.com generic minesweeper page), excluded per batch source rules as non-authoritative list placement.

- Negative finding from index/web search, not proof no claim was ever filed - CourtListener coverage skews to digitized federal opinions and RECAP dockets, and the structured docket search remains unrun at this designation string (HTTP 429); state-court filings and non-digitized dockets are underrepresented. Establishes only that no qualifying case was located. Marketing roster entries are not claims of exposure; mesothelioma.net's variant mislabels the hull 'sold' (it was a lend-lease transfer).

- Finding
- Era/type inference for the physical hull - built as AM-150, a steel Admirable-class fleet minesweeper at Tampa Shipbuilding 1942-44, during the period when asbestos use in naval shipbuilding was standard - plausibly carried period-standard asbestos-containing materials in applications typical for the type: diesel exhaust lagging, engine-space insulation, machinery gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, fireproofing, accommodation insulation, and deck covering. Because the plant was diesel (two ALCO 539 engines, no boilers or steam lines), the dominant WWII asbestos pathway aboard steam vessels - boiler and steam-line lagging - did not exist on this hull. This inference applies identically here because AMc-127 is the same hull's pre-construction designation.

Applies to the built hull AM-150; the AMc-127 designation itself carried no ship and so has no asbestos history of its own. Does not establish quantity, location, or any individual exposure.

- Limitations
- Yard-level documentation, not a hull record - asbestos products documented at the yard do not establish installation aboard this hull. The dataset's asbestos_products_documented field is carried at face value; the yard record's own evidence array is empty in shipyards.json, so the underlying yard-level citations are not inspectable from the dataset file.
