    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Builder attribution conflicts with NavSource/navypedia (Dravo, Pittsburgh vs. Consolidated Steel, Orange - carried in gaps). Secondary compilation for this hull: laid down 28 November 1943 as Bassett (DE-672), a Buckley-class destroyer escort, at Dravo Corp., Neville Island, Pittsburgh, PA; launched 15 January 1944; redesignated APD-73 27 June 1944; ferried to Consolidated Steel Corp., Orange, TX for fitting out as a Charles Lawrence-class high-speed transport; commissioned USS Bassett (APD-73) 23 February 1945, LCDR Harold J. Theriault USNR in command; WWII Asiatic-Pacific theater; occupation service 12 September - 22 November 1945; decommissioned 29 August 1946 at Green Cove Springs, FL and laid up Atlantic Reserve Fleet; recommissioned 7 December 1950, LCDR Demetrius J. Construction trades at Dravo Neville Island and Consolidated Steel Orange 1943-45; crew 1945-57
    Limitations
Secondary compilation, not an official record. Builder claim (Dravo, Neville Island; ferried to Orange for fitting-out) conflicts with DANFS (Consolidated Steel, Orange as builder) - navypedia's block placement of DE-668-673 in the Dravo, Pittsburgh block supports the Dravo laydown, but contract documents not reviewed; decommissioning 29 August 1946 conflicts with DANFS 29 April 1946; boiler maker (Combustion Engineering) conflicts with navypedia block map (Foster Wheeler for DE-665-673). All conflicts carried in gaps rather than silently reconciled.

NARA Catalog query returned hull-specific holdings not yet retrieved: 'USS BASSETT - War History' (file unit, naId 77619037); WWII war diaries for March, April, May, June, July, October, and November 1945 (file units incl. naId 139941020, 139989162, 140046106, 101704814, 101776706, 77565263, 77587792); and still-picture item 'APD-73 Bassett' (naId 7575265). These are the standard war-diaries/war-history holdings for a commissioned vessel and are the unexplored primary-source leads for this hull's material and availability records.

    Finding
Era/class inference: DE-672 is a Buckley-class (TE, BuShips design groups 2-3) hull - the only DE group besides the John C. Butler (WGT) class with a full steam plant: 2 'D' express-type boilers at 435 psi/750 deg F superheat feeding GE turbo-electric machinery, 12,000 shp. Navypedia's per-block boiler map assigns Foster Wheeler boilers to the DE 665-673 block including this hull (NavSource's APD-73 spec block reads Combustion Engineering - conflict carried in gaps). Navypedia confirms DE-668-673 were completed as fast transports APD-69 to APD-74. A steam-powered escort built 1943-45 would have carried era-standard asbestos applications - boiler and steam-line insulation/lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, electrical insulation, and deck coverings - making the TE class the most asbestos-relevant DE design.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding; no ship-specific asbestos record exists for this hull (see ev-uss-bassett-de672-06). Boiler-manufacturer block assignment is navypedia-sourced and conflicts with NavSource's Combustion Engineering listing; neither verified against contract documents. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure.

    Finding
CourtListener sweep (2026-09-29): "USS Bassett" opinion search returned zero hits - no published opinion names the vessel. "USS Bassett" docket (RECAP index) search returned zero hits - no indexed docket names the vessel. Hull-number queries "DE-672" and "APD-73" were deferred mid-session by fleet pacing (shared CourtListener quota spent; per helper guidance, deferred rather than retried into the limiter) - recorded in the search ledger as incomplete.

    Limitations
Zero exact-name hits in both indexes is a clean negative for published opinions and indexed dockets, but does not reach state-court filings, MDL-875 party sheets without indexed vessel strings, or paid-reporter opinions outside the corpus. Hull-number sweep incomplete - the 'DE-672'/'APD-73' strings could still produce identifier collisions (statute/docket-entry references) and, less likely, a vessel mention; absence of those queries is logged, not inferred as a negative.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-672/APD-73: no hull ACM survey, no abatement or disposal-disclosure record, no museum hazmat documentation (hull went to Colombia in 1968 and was scrapped - never preserved or open to the public in US custody), and no published opinion or indexed docket names the vessel in any capacity (CourtListener exact-name opinion and docket queries both returned zero). Third-party marketing/listicle pages (asbestos-ships.com, simmonsfirm.com, mesotheliomahelp.org) name USS Bassett as an asbestos ship but are non-authoritative and excluded per batch rules; one carries an incorrect 1966 strike year.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a steam-powered 1943-45 escort's era materials would typically persist until yard work, foreign-service overhaul, or scrapping disturbed them; nothing here establishes or defeats any individual exposure claim or legal eligibility. Hull-number CourtListener queries incomplete (see ev-05).
