- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Online entry differs from the print DANFS spec block (1,950 tons full and 17'4" draft vs. print 1,280 tons and 20' draft; print lacks the armament line). - Yard-level documentation for yards where this hull was worked on: Long Beach Naval Shipyard is a tier-1 asbestos-documented yard in the Atlas dataset and was a GAO HRD-80-2 fieldwork site; DE-1025 underwent a drydock availability there 30 June-10 October 1965, modifications 11-26 January 1966, and a regular overhaul 21 May-26 August 1969 (all per DANFS). The builder yard (Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel Corp., San Francisco/Alameda), Naval Repair Facility San Diego (1962 FRAM drydock, 1964 overhaul), S.S.K. Shipyard Sasebo (1967 repairs), and National Metal & Steel Terminal Island (1974 scrapping) are not Atlas dataset entries.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2 (full text blocked, HTTP 403)
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program: the Navy's 5 January 1979 enclosure stated that each in-service ship carried several types of asbestos-containing materials and 'all ships presently in service contain some quantity of asbestos' (deck tiling, galley-range cabling, piping gaskets and packing, brakes and clutches), and the report documents the transition to asbestos-free specifications beginning 1973 with asbestos-insulated deliveries continuing to May 1978. DE-1025 was designed, built (1955-57), and retired (1973) entirely inside the pre-transition era. Standing 1975 policy removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs - meaning original-era insulation typically remained in place unless a yard period disturbed it. GAO fieldwork yards included Long Beach Naval Shipyard, where this hull had three documented availabilities.

- Finding
- Era/class inference: this hull was a Dealey-class (SCB 72, DE-1021-1030 subgroup sometimes classified Courtney class) destroyer escort built 1955-57 with a fossil-fuel steam plant - two Foster-Wheeler boilers feeding one De Laval geared turbine (20,000 shp, single shaft, ~25-26 knots). A Cold War-era Navy steam escort would have carried era-standard asbestos applications: thermal insulation on boilers, turbine, machinery, piping and ducting; gaskets and packing; deck coverings; fireproofing; electrical insulation. The 1962 FRAM work added a DASH flight deck and SQS-23 sonar - modernization equipment of the era.

- Archival leads for hull-level material/work documentation: (a) DE-1025 deck logs (RG 24/BuPers logbook series) are digitized at NARA - the August 1960 log is cataloged as NAID 215669729; logs document availabilities and yard periods in daily detail; (b) a per-hull Booklet of General Plans or Dealey-class engineering drawings in RG 19 would record machinery and insulation-spec callouts; (c) the 1974 National Metal & Steel scrapping contract file (MARAD/Navy sales records) may carry hazmat or condition language.

- Finding
- No qualifying litigation naming this hull located. CourtListener opinion index: '"USS Bauer"' = 0 hits; '"USS Bauer"' dockets = 0 hits. '"DE-1025"' = 3 opinion hits, all identifier collisions on review - United States v. McGrath (7th Cir. 1987) and Chauffeurs Local 135 v. Jefferson Trucking (7th Cir. 1980) match on Judge William J. Bauer's name plus a numeric fragment, and West Coast Truck Lines/Delta Traffic Service v. Weyerhaeuser (9th Cir. 1990) matches a non-vessel number string. '"DE-1025"' dockets = 18 hits (26 documents), all identifier collisions on review - 'DE 1025' docket-entry numbers and filing references inside unrelated civil, criminal, and bankruptcy dockets (incl. the MDL-875 asbestos master docket and the W.R. Grace bankruptcy, where the match is a docket-entry number, not a vessel reference) plus party-name matches on 'The Bauer Law Firm, LLC'; no vessel-related result identified.

- Sweep completed 2026-09-28 under intermittent fleet pacing. Not a trial-level finding for any vessel - it establishes only that no docketed opinion or RECAP docket surfaced naming USS Bauer or DE-1025 as a vessel. Absence of a docket hit does not prove no claim was ever asserted; asbestos lawsuits naming hulls are a small subset of filed cases. 'Bauer' is a common surname (and a Seventh Circuit judge's name), and USS Harry F. Bauer (DD-738/DM-26) is a different hull named for a different officer - unqualified 'Bauer' litigation references cannot be attributed to this hull; surname and phrasing-variant queries ('aboard the Bauer') remain a residual gap.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-1025: no hull ACM survey, abatement contract, materials inventory, museum hazmat disclosure, or confirmed docketed litigation naming this hull was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was sold for scrapping August 1974, so no museum-phase or layberth hazmat record can exist. Generic asbestos claims for 'USS Bauer DE-1025' exist on law-firm marketing pages (shepardlawfirm.com, mesotheliomahelp.org, thelyonfirm.com, navyshipexposure.com equipment-manifest page) - all are boilerplate ship-list pages with no cited primary source and are excluded per source rules.
