[2]DANFS-derived identity via Wikipedia page for USS Bayfield (APA-33), which incorporates public-domain DANFS text; corroborated by Hyperwar/NHHC Online Library photo page (APA-33 identity, C3-S-A2 construction) and shipscribe.com class pages [nhhc_danfs]

- Finding
- USS Bayfield (APA-33) was the lead ship of the Bayfield-class attack transports, named for Bayfield County, Wisconsin — the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name. Built as the commercial freighter SS Sea Bass (Maritime Commission hull 275, WPS hull 87, type C3-S-A2) by Western Pipe & Steel, San Francisco, California; laid down 14 November 1942; launched 15 February 1943; assigned to the Navy as AP-78; redesignated APA-33 on 1 February 1943; commissioned 20 November 1943 with a United States Coast Guard crew. Served in World War II (including Normandy), the Korean War, and the Vietnam War; awarded four battle stars for World War II, four for Korea, and two for Vietnam. Decommissioned 28 June 1968; stricken 1 October 1968; scrapped September 1969.

[3]Writer 7 research sweep, 2026-09-25 (see search_ledger for query log) [other_primary]
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Negative finding: no ship-specific asbestos documentation was located for this hull in the 2026-09-25 research sweep. No hull asbestos survey, HAER recordation, abatement record, or qualifying asbestos litigation was identified. Targeted web searches returned only attorney-marketing pages (excluded per brief). The CourtListener litigation sweep was attempted but the fleet-wide pacing limiter declined the request, so no CL results were obtained — this is not a finding of no litigation.

- Limitations
- Documents the researcher's own negative search result, not an authoritative finding of absence. CourtListener coverage is incomplete (throttled); NARA/HAER holdings were not exhaustively searched.

[4]General historical context on WWII-era U.S. naval construction materials; no hull-specific source [other_primary]
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era context only: as a 1943-built attack transport serving through 1968, the ship's engineering plant and hull would have carried era-standard insulation, lagging, gaskets, and packing materials typical of early-1940s naval construction. Whether any of those materials contained asbestos, and in what condition, was never documented for this hull.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only — never a ship-specific finding. Does not establish that asbestos was present aboard this hull, nor exposure for any individual.
