    Finding
DANFS record for this hull: named for John Bazely, Royal Navy officer later knighted and made Vice Admiral of the Red (commanded the 10-gun cutter HMS Alert in her victory over the Continental brig Lexington off Morlaix on 19 September 1777, and HMS Bombay at the 1816 bombardment of Algiers). Laid down 5 April 1942 by the Boston Navy Yard; launched 27 June 1942; allocated to the Royal Navy under lend-lease 18 February 1943 as HMS Bazely (pendant K.311); battle honors Atlantic 1943-45 and Arctic 1945; figured in the destruction of three German submarines - U-648 on 23 November 1943 with HMS Blackwood (K.347) and HMS Drury (K.316), U-600 on 25 November 1943 with Blackwood, and a third on 21 April 1945 with Drury and HMS Bentinck (K.314). Returned to U.S. custody at Chatham, England on 20 August 1945; manned by officers and men from USS Surprise (PG-63), itself turned over to the Royal Navy the same day; commissioned as Bazely (DE-2) at 0810 that day, Lt. Lester H. Watson, USNR, in command. Embarked 39 passengers, sailed in TG 21.3 (ten former British DEs being repatriated), reached the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard 8 September 1945, inactive save for ammunition offload at Fort Mifflin; decommissioned 22 October 1945; struck from the Navy list 16 November 1945; breaking up completed by the navy yard by 28 May 1946.

    Limitations
DANFS documents identity, dates, and operations, not materials or asbestos content. Internal inconsistency: the text credits 'U-648' to both the 23 November 1943 action and the 21 April 1945 action; uboat.net event records identify the April 1945 sinking as U-636 (55deg50'N, 10deg31'W, all 42 lost) - carried in gaps. Finding
Official NPS dataset lists this hull as BDE-2 (Escort Vessel): keel laid 1942 Apr 5; launched 1942 Jun 27; commissioned 1945 Aug 20 - with the dataset footnote that escorts loaned to Britain were 'placed in U.S. Navy service on return from loan to Great Britain; retained Royal Navy names Bayntun, Bazely, Kingsmill, Pasley, and Hoste, respectively'; fate 'Loaned to Britain 1943-1945; named Bazely (1945): scrapped 1946.' Finding
NavSource corroborates and extends the DANFS timeline: contract awarded 1 November 1941; christened/launched details with sponsor Mrs. Eustace A. (Margaret Phoebe) Brock; transferred to the Royal Navy and commissioned HMS Bazely (K.311) 18 February 1943 under Lt.Cdr. Jeffry V. Brock, RCNVR; GMT-type specifications (4 x GM Model 16-278A diesels with electric drive, 6,000 shp, 2 screws, 19 kt; displacement 1,140 lt / 1,430 full; complement 156); single USN commanding-officer entry - Lcdr. Lester H. Watson, 20 Aug-22 Oct 1945 (commission/decommission). Photo credits document a Boston Navy Yard official photograph of the ship underway in Boston Harbor, 18 March 1943 (Boston Navy Yard Photo #1093-43, Boston National Historical Park Collection, NPS Cat. No. 10383), and wartime images at her Belfast home port (Pollock Dock).

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/yard inference: an Evarts-class (GMT type) destroyer escort built at the Boston Navy Yard in 1942 would have carried era-standard asbestos applications appropriate to a diesel-electric ship - exhaust-system insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, winch/windlass brake linings, and deck coverings - but not the boiler/turbine and steam-line lagging that dominate steam-ship asbestos profiles, because the GMT plant is diesel-electric (4 x GM 16-278A diesels, electric drive, no boilers). Builder Boston Naval Shipyard is a documented tier-3 asbestos-era yard in the Atlas dataset (WWII peak employment 50,128; John Crane gasket/packing litigation), as is the scrapping yard, Philadelphia Naval Shipyard (tier 3; WWII peak 47,695; multiple asbestos product identifications in litigation).

Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No hull ACM record exists for this vessel; does not quantify material, does not establish any individual's exposure, and does not address Royal Navy modifications performed in UK yards, which are undocumented for materials.

    Finding type

    Finding
Specialist convoy/U-boat record corroborates the RN career and resolves the DANFS misprint: uboat.net's event log records '21 Apr 1945 - German U-boat U-636 was sunk in the North Atlantic west of Ireland, in position 55deg50'N, 10deg31'W, by depth charges from the British frigates HMS Bazely (A/Lt.Cdr. J.W. Cooper, DSC, RNR), HMS Drury (Lt.Cdr. N.J. Parker, RN) and HMS Bentinck (A/Lt.Cdr. P.R.G. Worth, RN).' The April 1945 victim was U-636, not U-648 as the DANFS text prints (U-648 was the 23 Nov 1943 sinking). The page also lists wartime COs (A/Lt.Cdr. Jeffry Vanstone Brock, RCNVR, 18 Feb 1943-2 Aug 1944; A/Lt.Cdr. Jack Winston Cooper, RNR, 2 Aug 1944-mid 1945).

    Limitations
Specialist secondary database, not an official record - used to resolve the internal DANFS contradiction on the April 1945 U-boat identity and for RN command detail. uboat.net's summary line reads 'Returned to the USN on 22 August 1945,' conflicting with the 20 August date in DANFS, the NPS dataset, NavSource, and britainsnavy.org.uk - the majority/primary-source date is carried. Finding
Archival leads for hull-level material records: Boston NHP's archival collection includes 'ship history files of ships that were built, launched, repaired, or commissioned at Boston Naval Shipyard' plus ~70,000 yard photographs and ~13,000 architectural drawings - the collection already catalogs Boston Navy Yard Photo #1093-43 (NPS Cat. No. 10383, HMS Bazely underway in Boston Harbor, 18 March 1943). NARA holds WWII-era USN deck logs; a DE-2 log for 20 August-22 October 1945 would document the sole USN commission. BuShips general plans/specifications for BDE-2 (RG 19) are an additional lead.

    Finding
CourtListener sweep (2026-09-28) located NO litigation naming this hull. Exact-name queries: 'USS Bazely' = 0 opinion hits; 'HMS Bazely' = 0; '"DE-2" Bazely' = 0. Bare 'Bazely' returned 16 opinion hits, all name collisions - none vessel-related: Louisiana appellate decisions citing Bazley v. Tortorich, 397 So.2d 475 (La. 1981) (the intentional-tort/'substantially certain' precedent, verified inside Fricke v. Owens-Corning Fiberglas, La. 1990), Ohio criminal appeals, and older NY/IL cases carrying 'Bazely' as a party or person surname. No hit involves either USS Bazely (DE-2) or the Civil War-era USS Bazely (1863, ex-J.E. Bazely). RECAP docket index 'Bazely' returns a loose/tokenized result set (count 2,119) whose top-ranked entries are unrelated surnames (Baze, Bazel, Baze v. Astrue etc.) - zero literal 'Bazely' matches in the top results; no vessel-related docket located.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-2/HMS Bazely (K.311): the ship was broken up at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard by 28 May 1946 - decades before ACM surveys or abatement recordkeeping existed - so no hull ACM survey, abatement record, donation-condition hazmat disclosure, or museum documentation exists to locate; and no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull was found.
