- vessel_history
- Finding
- NHHC DANFS identifies this vessel as the Fletcher-class destroyer Bearss (DD-654), built by Gulf Shipbuilding Corp. at Chickasaw, Alabama. It was laid down 14 July 1942, launched 25 July 1943, commissioned 12 April 1944, placed out of commission in reserve 31 January 1947, recommissioned 12 September 1951, and decommissioned 1 October 1963. It was struck from the Naval Vessel Register 1 December 1974 and sold for scrapping in April 1976. DANFS lists a design complement of 329 and one World War II battle star. Its service included North Pacific operations in World War II, postwar occupation duty in Japan, a 1954 western Pacific deployment, and reserve training and support duties before final decommissioning.

- Population
- Navy crew and shipyard personnel during the ship's service life; specific exposure populations are not identified by this source
- Limitations
- This official service history establishes identity, dates, builder, and service chronology only. It does not document asbestos-containing materials, shipboard asbestos work, or individual exposure. The complement is the DANFS design figure, not a verified crew count for a particular voyage.

[3]National Archives and Records Administration, Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961 [other_primary]

- Sections 'Bureau of Ships General, Confidential, and Secret Correspondence', 'General Information Books', and 'Ship Engineering Drawings'
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's research guide identifies potentially relevant Navy record groups and series for ship-specific asbestos research, including Bureau of Ships correspondence (RG 19), General Information Books and Ship Information Books, and ship engineering drawings arranged by hull number and material group. The guide identifies insulation and lagging among drawing categories to seek. This is a research roadmap, not a finding that asbestos was aboard Bearss.

- Record series include 1940-1961 and ship engineering drawings 1874-1976
- Limitations
- The cited guide does not identify Bearss, establish asbestos use aboard DD-654, or report a search of the underlying files. RG 19 hull drawings and correspondence for DD-654, as well as class and yard records, remain unexamined leads.

[4]CourtListener authenticated API v4 search attempt through fleet helper; exact-name opinion search for "USS Bearss" [court_record]
- Locator
- Helper diagnostic: 'COURTLISTENER PACING: the fleet-wide request budget is momentarily spent'; the API returned no search results
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No litigation hit classification is available. The authenticated CourtListener helper did not return API results because its fleet-wide pacing limiter reported its shared request budget temporarily spent. The exact-name and hull-number sweep is incomplete; no conclusion about qualifying asbestos litigation, other litigation, name collisions, or no result can be drawn.

- Search attempted 2026-09-27
- Limitations
- This is a blocked search record, not evidence that no case exists. No CourtListener API response was received, so the ship name and DD-654 were not classified against case documents or opinions. Do not treat this row as an asbestos exposure finding.
