    Finding
USS Berrien (APA-62), Gilliam-class attack transport, built by Consolidated Steel, Wilmington, CA (MC hull 1855). Laid down 23 February 1944; launched 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Jack Love; acquired 7 October 1944; commissioned 8 October 1944, LCDR John Murray Gallagher in command. Nicknames 'Mighty B' and 'Blue Bitch'. WWII operations: invasion of Iwo Jima; invasion of Okinawa, where she was hit near her stacks, a radioman was wounded, and the wounded radioman was awarded a Purple Heart (reportedly the 18th awarded aboard); air-sea rescue of 10 Army fliers off Guam (3 July); transport duty at San Francisco, Manila, and the initial occupation landings at Aomori and Otaru, Japan. Her crew declined participation in the Bikini atomic tests for lack of volunteers. Called at Tokyo Bay, Seattle, and Shanghai (Huangpu River, February 1946). Decommissioned 17 May 1946; returned to the Maritime Commission 12 August 1947; berthed at Suisun Bay, California; Fleet Repair Program 11 July-28 October 1955; sold for scrap to Zidell Explorations 17 May 1966 and delivered 16 August 1966. Stricken 1 August 1947. Two battle stars for WWII service.

    Limitations
DANFS returning HTTP 500 fleet-wide; identity facts from DANFS-derived Wikipedia narrative corroborated against hullnumber.com, alchetron.com, and shipscribe.com. Not to be confused with USS Kenmore (AP-62), a different vessel with the same hull digits.

  3. [3]CourtListener authenticated search (combined ship name + hull number) not completed - helper connection broke mid-request, fleet pacing limits (2026-09-25) [court_record]
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
CourtListener authenticated search for the combined ship name and hull number ("USS Berrien" APA-62) could not be completed during the writing session. The Mac Studio authenticated helper accepted the request but the SSH connection broke before any results returned; remaining ships were logged without further attempts to avoid tripping fleet-wide pacing limits. The search gap is logged; the search must be retried before any litigation finding can be claimed.

  4. [4]U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, asbestos exposure guidance for Navy veterans [other_primary]
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Era context: the Department of Veterans Affairs states that many WWII-era Navy ships contained asbestos products, with boiler and engine rooms of particular concern because asbestos was widely used as insulation during this period.
