NavSource data block: laid down 15 July 1943 at Electric Boat Co., Groton; modernized at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard March-September 1950 to Guppy I (Fleet Snorkel) configuration; arrived New London 27 September 1950 to embark core Turkish Navy crew; sailed for Izmir under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program and decommissioned 16 November 1950; struck from the US Naval Vessel Registry and commissioned TCG Dumlupinar (D-6). Final disposition: at 0200 on 4 April 1953, Dumlupinar was rammed by Swedish M/V Naboland off Nara Point, Dardanelles, while returning from NATO exercise 'Blue Sea'; struck on her starboard bow on the surface, holed in her forward torpedo room, and sank - 81 Turkish submariners perished; 5 of the 7 bridge personnel survived.

    Finding
Balao-class diesel-electric boats carried NO boilers or steam plant (BuShips 1945: DERD drive, four main diesel-generator engines - diesel maker Fairbanks-Morse or General Motors varying by hull block, electric motors Elliott or General Electric, ~5,400 hp, two shafts). Era-typical asbestos-relevant applications on the type: diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic and thermal hull insulation, insulation around galley and refrigeration equipment, and battery/electrical materials. The Electric Boat/Groton yard's asbestos product use in submarine construction of this era is independently documented at the yard level.
