Arrived Philadelphia Navy Yard 9 October 1945; 16th Fleet; repairs at Electric Boat 1946; out of commission in reserve at New London 12 February 1947. Recommissioned 7 January 1952 (SubDiv 82, then SubDiv 41, Key West); pre-inactivation overhaul at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard June 1953; out of commission in reserve at New London 20 November 1953. Ten battle stars.

- Finding
- Name collision resolved: asbestos litigation naming 'USS Bluefish' concerns the Sturgeon-class nuclear submarine SSN-675, not this hull. In Zimmerman v. Air & Liquid Systems Corp., D. Conn. No. 3:14-cv-00176 (Nature of Suit 368 P.I.: Asbestos; CL docket 4199245), defendants' summary-judgment-stage statements of fact recite that plaintiff Ronald Zimmerman served 1966-1971 as a 'reactor operator' aboard two nuclear submarines, USS Bluefish and USS Sam Houston (SSBN-609), and 'worked alongside shipyard workers while the Bluefish was under construction at General Dynamics, Electric Boat Division in Groton, Connecticut.' A reactor operator on a boat under construction at EB Groton in 1966-1971 is SSN-675 (laid down 1968, commissioned 1971); this hull was stricken 1959 and scrapped 1960.

- Population
- Not this hull's population - SSN-675-era EB construction trades and nuclear crew
- Limitations
- Correction row - the Zimmerman 'USS Bluefish' is SSN-675 by service dates, reactor-operator billet, and EB construction era; no exposure finding attaches to SS-222. The case's own exposure analysis (turbine insulation aboard nuclear boats) is not attributed to this diesel hull. CourtListener API search was throttled at sweep time; docket metadata and document text verified via RECAP PDF and CL index pages.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/design inference for a diesel-electric fleet submarine of the Gato class: the boats have no boilers or steam plant - era-consistent asbestos-relevant applications are diesel-exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, galley and refrigeration insulation, and electrical/battery materials. All construction and documented Navy-yard periods on this hull fall inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era. This hull was built 1942-43, yarded at Philadelphia NY (1945) and EB (1946), recommissioned (1952), and given a pre-inactivation overhaul at Portsmouth NSY (1953) - all pre-substitution-era insulation events.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2 (full text blocked, HTTP 403)
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - meaning every construction, overhaul, and repair event on this hull (built 1942-43) predates the substitution era.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for SS-222: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming THIS hull was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener API search was rate-limit throttled on 2026-09-18 (HTTP 429; site search interface and feeds also blocked); site-scoped web searches of courtlistener.com for 'USS Bluefish'/'SS-222' surfaced only the SSN-675 collision documented above - no qualifying case for this hull.
